Love Is Blind: Epilogue
One Year Later
Robyn sighed as Chris gently massaged her shoulders, “What aren’t you good at?”
Chris chuckled as he placed a kiss at the top of her spine, “I haven’t found anything I can’t do, that’s why you keep me around.”
“I cannot disagree with that.”
“How you feeling?”
“Better. I hate that my balance is still off after all this time.”
“It’s not really noticeable, you just have a moment every once in a while. No big deal.”
“Nice way to say I’m clumsy as hell.”
Chris laughed, “you are not clumsy, Baby.”
“You’re my husband, of course you’d say that.”
“I’m your husband,” Chris repeated with a laugh.
“Is that all you heard me say?”
“That’s all that matters. I don’t care about you being clumsy, you fall, I catch you. That’s how we work anyway.”
“We’re married, you don’t have to keep sweet-talking me.”
“I will never stop”
“That still feels weird saying that.”
“What?”
“Married. We were divorced for seven years and now look at us.”
Chris chuckled, “we are the best thing that’s ever happened to each other.”
“You think so?”
“I know so.”
“Babe, can you pass me the lotion please?”
Chris secured a towel around his waist as he grabbed the large jar of body butter, “Nope. I’ll do it.”
“You do know my hands work?”
“I know but I’m gonna rub you down anyway. I love this time.”
Robyn folded the towel in between her breasts then followed Chris back into their bedroom. She sat down on the edge of the bed as Chris sat down on the fall in front of her. He lifted her foot onto his lap before he opened the jar and scooped some of the body butter into his palm then began rubbing it into her skin.
“You know what I think about sometimes?” Robyn asked.
“What?”
“Your vows.”
“My vows? Seriously?”
“Yes. Why do you sound surprised?”
“That’s not the first thing I anticipated you saying, that’s all.”
“You said a lot that I wasn’t expecting. It was very poetic.”
“Well, I’ve always had a way with words according to you.”
“I have said that before, huh?”
“Yes. Want to know a secret?”
“You better not tell me somebody else wrote your vows.”
Chris chuckled, “Nah, I wrote it, I just didn’t write it all recently.”
“Really? When did you write it?”
“Years ago, it was one of my therapy assignments. I had to write a letter to you regarding your influence on my life. I added a few things that were relative to our new wedding but most of it was written back then.”
“Babe, that was almost ten years ago.”
“I know.”
“And you held on to it all this time?”
“It was something you needed to hear, using it as my vows just seemed to be the perfect time.”
“Can you recite it for me again?”
“All of it?”
“Whatever you can remember.”
Chris smiled as he moved to her other leg and began to rub body butter into it, “I don’t know if it was fate or just divine timing but your face being the first face I saw as I walked into my elementary school classroom to your face being the last face I’ll see before I close my eyes every night was definitely not an accident. There was something about the way you always looked at me that made me feel important and worthy. It was different from the way I’d ever been looked at before and even then, at ten years old, unable to describe the feeling but knowing I felt something all the same, I fell in love with you. I couldn’t verbalize it but I tried to show it in the best way my ten year old brain knew how. So I catered to you, I protected you, I cherished you and you did the same for me. The stability I had always hoped for, you gave to me. If someone had told me then that I’d be marrying you for the second time now, I’d think they were crazy. Everyone knows this is our second time saying I do but I feel like saying I will would be more appropriate. I will, to illustrate future promises and acknowledge that now is not the only time we should be concerned about. I was concerned about now when I let you go over 7 years ago but the future matters just the same. I will continue to protect you. I will continue to care for you. For our babies. Our family. I will continue to take care of you. I will continue to honor you and in turn honor myself. I owe you a lifetime, a lifetime I promised you years ago, a lifetime I wasn’t strong enough to give you before but that I’m strong enough to give you now.”
Chris stood from his position on the floor and gently pulled Robyn up then gathered her in his arms. He rested his cheek against hers as he continued speaking in a soft whisper, “Those green eyes haunted me. Your smile hung over my shoulder like a picture on a wall. Your touch gently pushed me into the direction to better myself. I’m ready to be all you want me to be as well as what I want me to be. For our babies. For our relationship. For our love. This isn’t so much a second chance but a continuation of where we had already been. I knew the moment I saw you again that we would be here and I also knew you’d fight yourself all the way but the day you saw that this was always meant to be, I’d knew you’d melt into me as you always did. There is nothing in my life that I ever wanted more than to give you what I owed you. And with this ring, I thee wed. And with this ring, I will continue to be all you need me to be.”
His skin absorbed the haphazard tear that fell down Robyn’s cheek in between their pressed flesh. His hand smoothed along her expanded waist and across her swollen belly. The warmth of the new life growing inside her was felt through the towel. Their third blessing, unexpected and scary but a blessing nonetheless, moved as Chris’s fingertips gently pressed a pattern against their home. Robyn held onto him tighter as her emotions settled, “how’d you know my favorite parts?”
“They made you cry at our ceremony too.”
“That is very true.”
“The baby is moving.”
“I felt it. The baby always moves when Daddy’s near.”
“You been feeling ok?”
“Yea. I’m not on bed rest this time so I’m a little bit more optimistic this time around.”
Chris leaned back from her face and stroked her cheek with the back of his hand. Robyn leaned forward and pecked his lips, “this wasn’t supposed to be that emotional.”
“We’ve been married for a year, if I can still draw it out of you then I’m doing something very right.”
Robyn laughed as she kissed him again, “you’ve always been my weakness, Christopher.”
“And you’ve always been my strength. I guess we’re just a perfect match.”
“I’m already pregnant, Sir.”
“And?”
“And you don’t have to keep sweet-talking me like this.”
“But I’ma do it anyway.”
Chris pressed a soft kiss to the middle of her forehead before he rested his chin on top of her head, “you ready for bed?”
“Yea. Can you get a nightshirt for me?”
“Yup. Anything else?”
“Nope, I’m good.”
Chris left into their walk-in closet while Robyn sat back down on the bed.
                                   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Mommy! Mommy!”
Robyn turned her head as she heard Anesa’s voice heading in her direction. The 4 year old ran into the living room and jumped on the couch next to her mother. Sweetly lying her head against Robyn’s shoulder, “hi Mommy!”
“Hi Baby Girl. What’s going on? You sound so excited.”
“Daddy says we can go with you to find out what the baby is. He says I don’t have to go to school that day”
“Oh. Now me and Daddy didn’t discuss that part.”
“That’s because I didn’t say that part. Right Anesa?”
Robyn chuckled as Chris walked into the living room with Christian asleep in his arms. Anesa tucked her head further into Robyn’s body, “I was just hoping, Daddy.”
“Well Ms. Anesa,” Chris replied as he sat down on the loveseat that was situated perpendicular to the couch Robyn and Anesa was on, “Mommy’s appointment is in the afternoon, after you get out of school so you don’t have to miss school for anything.”
“But what if Mommy is nervous and needs me to take care of her during the day.”
“Mommy will be with Daddy so she’ll be fine.”
Anesa pouted and Chris chuckled, “I love you Lovebug but that face is not gonna change my mind. Now get your bookbag from by the door and take it up to your room.”
“Yes Sir.”
Anesa kissed Robyn’s cheek then left to the front door before running down the hallway. Chris shook his head as he shifted their son into a more comfortable position in his lap, “The little girl is something else.”
“That is all you,” Robyn said with a laugh.
“No, that is you. I didn’t teach her to negotiate like that.”
“You make it sound as if it’s a bad thing.”
“Depends on the circumstances. So how was your day?”
“It was good. We had a board meeting regarding the foundation. Beverly has put me in charge of the fundraising gala since I’m remote and can’t see any patients.”
“She’s really enjoying that promotion.”
“She enjoys making me deal with people.”
Chris laughed, “Baby, you can plan this in your sleep. Don’t be a whiner.”
“I’m pregnant, I’m allowed to whine.”
Chris arched his brow at her and Robyn faked like she was throwing a pillow at him, “Christian being in your lap just saved you.”
“Whatever. You know what you want for dinner?”
“I was gonna make some chicken unless you want something else.”
“I feel like making a Southern meal. How about fried chicken and catfish, hushpuppies, mac and cheese with cornbread?”
“Babe, you’ve been working and cooking for the past week, I can handle it.”
“That is not what I asked you, Mrs. Brown. Does that sound good to you?”
“I’m pregnant, everything sounds good to me but I don’t want you to burn out.”
Chris chuckled as he stood up and walked over to her. Robyn held her arms out to take Christian but Chris shook his head as he moved the baby into the crook of his arm. He leaned down and kissed her lips, “the only thing you have to worry about is that little one you’re carrying. I would ask you to stop working but I think you’d physically fight me before you’d do that.”
“And you would be right.”
“I love you and I can handle this. Let me take care of you, Robyn. Please.”
“Only if you promise to let me take care of you. You can’t forget about yourself during this time, especially not like before. I can still do things within reason. Will you let me sometimes?”
“I can compromise on that.’
“Then I can let you cook dinner tonight but I am cooking this weekend. Deal?”
“Deal.”
Chris sighed as he placed the tea bags into the pot of boiling water then grabbed a glass mug out of the overhead cabinet. He’d been restless for the past few weeks. He wasn’t sure if it was paranoia about the pregnancy or this weird feeling of wanderlust he had. The first year they were married the first time, he and Robyn were home for only pockets of time, usually if he had a project to be completed but other than that, they were traveling everywhere. He had settled into a routine once they were divorced, prior to getting Anesa, he took a few sabbaticals, leaves of absence just to get out of the house. That wasn’t able to be the case over the last few years.
As the brew reached his desired color, he turned off the stove and carefully poured some tea into his mug, squeezed a few drops of honey, a little bit of lemon juice then went to sit on the enlarged window ledge, which was the width of a daybed. Sometimes he wasn’t sure if it was actually wanderlust or just paranoia about being a husband again. They had successfully made it past their first year as a married couple again but there was still a bit of fear of how they would fare going forward. Things started going bad around this time the last time and as much as he didn’t want to think about it, it was hard not to. He took a sip of tea just as he saw Robyn’s reflection in the window. Her rounded belly protrude forward, stretching the thin fabric of her nightshirt.
“Hey you,” Chris said softly.
Robyn smiled and walked over to him, “you ok?”
“Yea. Can’t sleep.”
“Wanna talk about it?”
“Not sure I’m ready yet.”
“Hmm…”
“Want some tea?”
“Nah, I’m good. You mind some company?”
“Of course not.”
Setting his mug on a nearby side table, Chris helped Robyn to sit down in between his legs. She turned her body to rest into the crook of his left arm, facing the window. They sat in silence for a few minutes as she haphazardly drew circles on the window with her finger.
“You ok?” Chris asked as he rubbed her back. Robyn nodded her head as she continued to stare out the window, “you know you don’t have anything to be afraid of, you’re not the same person you were the first time.”
“How’d-”
“We had our first fight on this date. You walked out and didn’t come home for three days straight. I remember when I found you at the park, looking like you hadn’t washed in days. I wasn’t even sure if you had stayed in a place and just wasn’t sitting at the park for those three days. You were catatonic, seemed traumatized for some reason and you never completely snapped out of it until our last fight when you told me you wanted a divorce. I never understood what happened between the first fight and the last but you were never the same.”
“I honestly don’t remember our first fight. I don’t know if I just really don't remember or I erased it from my memory.”
“Could be a bit of both.”
“Something tells me you’ve never been able to forget it.”
“We said some horrible stuff to each other. I regret it happened.”
“I think that’s why I left, I feel like I traumatized myself.”
“Or it reminded you of a time when you were traumatized by the same circumstances. You never spoke to your therapist about it?’
“I don’t really remember it, I spoke about how we argued then we just stopped talking and how that affected me but I only went into specifics about moments that I could vividly remember. If you hadn’t mentioned finding me in the park I wouldn’t have really known what you were talking about.”
“You remember the park?”
“Yea, I ended up there a lot. I’m not sure what really drew me there, though.”
“When you disappeared, did you actually go to someone’s house or?”
“I was in the park, I used to sit there all day and I really didn’t sleep. I always sat in that hidden alcove that was covered by a lot of overhead trees. People never bothered me there, usually by nighttime, it was hard to see over there. And I would just sit there all day and night. After the first few times, Jessica used to bring me food and a blanket just to make sure I ate. It was never a priority when I got in one of those moods.”
“Explains why when you did finally come home, you’d sleep for hours.”
“My first instinct was to run when I felt uncomfortable or afraid.”
“And you’re getting that feeling now.”
“I remember the beginning of our second year is when things started to go bad. I don’t anticipate that being the case this time.”
“But your body isn’t completely convinced. Your fight or flight instincts are preparing themselves.”
“I guess you could say that.”
“Should I pack you a go bag with food and a blanket?”
Chris chuckled, “I appreciate the sentiment but no. I have an appointment with my therapist next week, we’ll discuss it.”
“Chris, I think we should go back to LA.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yea. I think it plays such a huge part in our history and we’ve never really addressed it. It’s where everything started for us.”
“That’s true.”
“And I don’t want to sound paranoid but I think there’s some unresolved issues that we left there, that could be contributing to your fear about us being married again. You know as soon as we could, we both just left. We’ve never talked about what made the situation turn out the way it did because it wasn’t just you and your situation with your parents. Things were turning before that, you know.”
“I can admit that. We’d have to wait until the baby is born. I’m not sure I wanna chance it on a plane with you still being pregnant.”
“Oh I know. I understand.”
“Are you sure you wanna do this?”
“If we want this marriage to make it past the three year mark, we have to be honest about why the first time we didn't. Who knows what else we’ve blocked out about our relationship especially since neither of us have stepped foot in California since the divorce.”
“Would you mind sitting in on a session with me?”
“Chris, I don’t-”
“I’m not saying you have to participate but I would really like you to be there with me next week. I know you get sensitive about us having our own space but sometimes it’s ok to share.”
Robyn sighed, “I don’t like therapists.”
“I figured that out already.”
“How?”
“Just had a feeling from when we first talked about it. Was your first experience that bad?”
“It was uncomfortable, I probably wasn’t ready to talk to anyone about what I was feeling. I just never felt comfortable with the whole talking to strangers thing.”
“That’s understandable, Baby. I’m not gonna make you go or anything, just promise me that you’ll think about it, ok?”
“I’ll think about it.”
“Thank you.”
“You ready to go to bed?”
“Still not sleepy.”
“Ok.”
Robyn kissed the inside of his forearm then snuggled deeper into the crook of his arm. Chris gently rubbed her back as he felt her body relax into sleep.
                                         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Baby, are you ok in there?”
Chris paused to wait for an answer before he rushed back into the bedroom. Robyn was lying back on the bed with her hands cupping the underside of her belly.
“Are you ok? What’s the matter?”
“I’m ok. It’s just the extra weight gets to me sometimes. I’m fine.”
“Stand up in front of me. Let me try something.”
Robyn sighed then pushed herself to a sitting position. She took Chris’s outstretched hand to pull herself up off the bed. He led her to stand in front of him then settled his hands underneath her belly, “take a deep breath and I’m gonna gently lift for a few moments, ok?”
“Ok.”
Robyn took in a breath as Chris lifted her belly in his hands. She leaned her head back against his shoulder in relief, “Oh My God, this is perfect.”
Chris chuckled softly as he kissed her temple, “you are too much.”
“No, this feels amazing, I swear.”
Chris gently let her belly down and Robyn groaned, “I’ll do it again later but we have to get out of here if we’re gonna make it to the appointment on time.”
“Does your doctor know that I’m coming?’
“Yes, she knows.”
“Does she know I don’t plan on speaking?”
“I told her that like you asked me to.”
“Then we’re on the same page?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Can you slide my shoes over here? I really cannot bend down.”
“I asked if you needed help getting ready and you said you had it.”
“I say a lot of things sometimes, I thought I did have it.”
Chris shook his head as he grabbed her slip ons. He carefully helped her put her feet inside her shoes then grabbed her bookbag off the side chair, “anything else you need?”
“No, we’re good to go.”
Robyn hooked her arm through Chris’s and they left.
“Did she irritate you?” Chris asked as they got into the car. He helped Robyn put on her seatbelt then his own before he turned over the ignition.
“Actually, no. She was ok.”
“You seem a little agitated.”
“I’m fine. I was there to observe and that’s what I did.”
“But?”
“But what?”
“There’s a but in there somewhere.”
“I know you were trying to get me comfortable with therapy but that wasn’t the way to do it.”
“I just wanted you to see what happens since you obviously had a bad experience. I’m not trying to get you into therapy or anything like that. It’s not your thing and I accept that.”
“Ok.”
“There was no agenda involved, I really just wanted you to meet her and see what happens. I promise.”
“Ok. I’m taking you at your word. Whats the plan for the rest of the day?”
“We can do lunch then we have to get ready for your ultrasound appointment.”
“Ooh can we get some food from that taco truck downtown? I really got a taste for Mexican.”
“We can get whatever you want.”
Anesa happily bounced in her chair as they waited into the doctor’s office. They were finally gonna see what kind of baby her mommy was carrying. She was really hoping for a little sister but another brother would be ok too.
“Anesa, Sweetie, you need to relax a little bit. You’re making Mommy nervous,” Robyn said softly from her spot on the examination table.
Anesa giggled then sat still, “Sorry Mommy, I’m just excited.”
“I know Sweetie but you can be excited and still sit still.”
“Yes Ma’am. Mommy, do you know what you want?”
“I just want a healthy baby, that’s all that matters.”
“Oh ok. Do you feel sick?”
“No, I’m actually doing ok right now. Thank you for asking.”
“You’re welcome. Mommy can I sit by you?”
“Of course you can, Sweetie. Be careful sliding the chair over.”
Anesa pushed the chair beside the table and grabbed Robyn’s hand that was hanging over the side. Robyn kissed the back of her hand then gave a slight squeeze as they continued to wait for Chris and the doctor to come back.
Chris stood outside the room with the doctor and Christian in his arms, “is there anything I might need to give her a heads up about before we go back in there?”
“Nothing bad, Mr. Brown. I think you’ll both be pleasantly surprised.”
“Are you sure?”
“Very sure.”
The doctor held open the door  then followed Chris and Christian inside. Chris sat down in the chair that was situated against the wall as the doctor sat in his rolling office chair.
“Ok Mrs. Brown, you can sit up now. I just needed to get another set of eyes for your ultrasound.”
“Is there something wrong?”
“No, it’s very good news.”
“So what is it?”
“You’re having twins.”
“What?”
“You’re having twins. They appear to be fraternal, one boy and one girl.”
“Wait, is that safe? Can I even-”
“Yes, it appears that everything is normal. I am in contact with your neurologist and such so we will keep an eye on the possibility of any complications but as of right now, your babies are healthy and normal.”
“Can we have a copy of the photo?” Chris asked.
“Absolutely. I’m gonna write up your prenatal recommendations and get some copies then you can be on your way.”
The doctor left the room and Chris turned to look at Robyn. She was holding her stomach with her free hand.
“Baby, are you ok?”
“Daddy, I think Mommy’s in shock,” Anesa said softly, “she’s squeezing my hand really tight.”
Chris set Christian in his stroller then walked over to Robyn and gently pulled Anesa’s hand out of her tight grip, “Baby, can you hear me? Are you ok?”
Robyn still didn’t speak but Chris noticed her chest was starting to heave.
“Damn it, she’s having an anxiety attack,” he murmured to himself, “Anesa, give Daddy Mommy’s bookbag.”
Anesa handed him the black bag and Chris carefully rummaged through it until he had her inhaler in hand. He shook it vigorously before holding it up to her lips, “Robyn, I need you to breathe for me, Baby. You’re making me nervous.”
He pushed the inhaler between her lips and pushed down on the pump twice. Robyn sucked in the air and Chris carefully rubbed her back, “good job. Now just take a few deep breaths for me, ok?”
Her chest gently moved up then down. After a few minutes, her body seemed back in control but she was still not speaking.
“Robyn, can you hear me? Are you ok?”
She nodded her head and Chris sighed, “Robyn, I’m going to get the doctor and we’ll go home. Will you be ok by yourself for a few moments?”
She nodded her head. Chris kissed her cheek then left out of the office door. Anesa moved to grab her hand again and kissed the back of it, “it’s gonna be ok, Mommy. You don’t have to be scared.”
                                         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“It’s gonna be ok, Mommy. You don’t have to be scared.”
Anesa’s voice kept floating in and out of Robyn’s head as she felt the oxygen mask be placed over her face. She looked to her left and Chris was standing there covered in hospital scrubs. She looked to her right and her doctor along with two nurses were prepping two infant carts. She was really about to give birth to twins. She squeezed Chris’s hand and he smiled down at her, “Baby, they’re almost here. I am so proud of you.”
Chris wiped the tear that had fallen down her cheek then gave her a kiss. Robyn looked down at her belly, it was covered by a partition. She had agreed to a c-section and subsequent tubal ligation just for safety purposes. They felt it was safer to do a c-section to minimize the stress on her body and prevent the possibility of a seizure. She still felt like she was sitting in her OB-GYN’s office, just hearing that she was having twins. It felt like yesterday, the final trimester of her pregnancy moving so fast she barely remembered it. But now, now she’s giving birth and she’s gonna get to hold her precious babies. She closed her eyes and started to recite a prayer. She just wanted her babies to live, anything she’d deal with it as it came but just let her babies make it.
“Ok family, here’s baby number 1. And it is a boy!” The doctor exclaimed.
Robyn’s eyes popped open just as the nurse lifted him above the partition. He wasn’t too big but he wasn’t small either. Chris moved to cut the umbilical cord before the nurse moved the infant over to a waiting cart. The next few minutes felt like hours before the second baby was held up for view. Her skin was already a light caramel color and she looked like she weighed just as much as her brother. Chris cut her cord then followed the nurse as she moved their daughter into her separate cart. Robyn watched as Chris took a few pictures before he removed both pairs of gloves and came back to grasp her hands, “Our babies are beautiful and healthy, Robs. We did it.”
She nodded her head in agreement as Chris kissed her lips.
They did it!
Love Is Blind: Chapter Twenty-Four
“Robs, we got a meeting in five minutes,” Beverly stated as she stood beside Robyn’s desk.
“I know. I’m trying to find the vendor file for Albert’s. Question? Did you move some of my stuff off my desk while I was gone?”
“I unpacked that box that was delivered the day your boyfriend came by and moved some of your files to your inbox but that was it.”
“What was in the box anyway?”
“This,” Beverly pointed at a large marble figurine that was now sitting by her phone, “I left the card it came with in your top drawer. I’m surprised you didn’t notice it.”
“I’ve been on Zoom conference calls all day. I haven’t had time to look at my phone. It is beautiful though.”
“It is.”
“Did you read the card?”
“Thought about it but it seemed like a personal gift.”
“Well thank you for your restraint.”
Beverly laughed, “We need to get going to the meeting. I got paper copies of the presentation slides and of the vendor file, we’ll have to find the original later.”
“Works for me.”
Robyn grabbed her iPad and followed Beverly to the conference room.
“Just something for you to always remember me by and to brighten up your desk. Love you. Christopher.”
Robyn smiled as she read the words of the card. Chris got her a just-because gift. And it was expensive as hell, going by the price on the internet when she researched what the figurine was. It was a marble statue in the shape of two non-descript bodies, one male and one female, entwined with each other. She didn’t see one that looked exactly like the one Chris gave her so it seemed to be custom. She picked up her office phone and dialed a number. It rang for a few moments before she heard a voice, “Hello, Professor Brown speaking.”
“Professor Brown? I kind of like the sound of that.”
Chris laughed, “Hey Baby. What’s going on?”
“Nothing much. I just wanted to check on you. How are you?”
“I’m good. Getting back into the swing of things.”
“Regretting teaching for the summer yet?”
“Actually no. I got a pretty good set of students this summer. I’m happy about that.”
“That’s great but I wanted to thank you for my gift.”
“You finally opened the box?”
“The day you came over for lunch, I completely forgot about it. Bev unpacked it while we were in Pennsylvania. Why didn’t you say anything about it?”
“Because it was a gift, I didn’t want to assume you opened it already and then ruin the surprise.”
“I guess. Is it custom?”
“It’s one of a kind but I didn’t have it specially made. The artist doesn’t do mass production.”
“Well it’s beautiful. What made you pick that one?”
“It just seemed like something you would like. Was I right?”
“Very right. What you up to right now?”
“Just finishing up a lesson plan. Why?”
“You gonna be in your office for a while?”
“Maybe a few more hours. I got office hours this afternoon.”
“Cool.”
“What are you up to?”
“Nothing. Just wondering.”
“You sure?”
“I’m sure. Well I just wanted to thank you for my gift. I gotta finish up this proposal and take a nap.”
“You’ve been doing ok with working your normal hours?”
“As long as I sneak a nap in, I’m good.”
“Alright Baby. Finish your work and get some rest, I’ll see you at home.”
“Ok. Love you.”
“I love you too, Baby. Bye.”
“Bye.”
They hung up. Robyn glanced at the clock then looked down at the proposal on her desk, “that can wait until tomorrow.”
She logged into her computer system and pulled up the online order form for her favorite restaurant.
“Somehow I just knew you were gonna pull up on me,” Chris said as he opened his office door. He took the large cloth bag from Robyn’s hand as he leaned in to kiss her.
“I wasn’t going to but then I said what the hell, I haven’t seen your office yet.”
“You haven't?”
“Nope.”
“That’s crazy. I thought I brought you here before but regardless, I’m glad you’re here.”
“Me too. I needed to get out of the office.”
“Tough day.”
“Long day. I was gonna just take a nap and get back at it but I decided to just take the rest of the day off.”
“My couch is very comfy if you wanna stay and still take your nap.”
“I’m not trying to crowd your space, I just wanted to bring you something to eat for a change.”
“I like you in my space though.”
Robyn playfully rolled her eyes as she sat on the edge of his desk, “so what’s the lesson for the week?”
“We are working on basic scales on the piano. This is my beginner’s Piano class that I’m teaching this summer.”
“You teaching composition classes?”
“Not this summer. I didn’t want to teach anything too complex. Beginner’s Piano lets me relax a bit because if I don’t want to teach, teach, I can always give them practice notes and they can do that in lieu of class.”
“Ah, good thinking.”
“I have good ideas sometimes.”
Robyn chuckled, “so when are you gonna play for me again? It’s been a long time actually.”
“Well after lunch, I could take you to my classroom, I keep a keyboard in there for illustrations.”
“I’d love to.”
“Great. So we’ll eat, I take you around to see some stuff then we’ll go to my class.”
                                           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Dada!”
Chris pulled his attention from Robyn moving around the kitchen to Christian sitting on his lap. He carefully fixed his elongated curls and kissed his forehead, “what’s up, Baby Boy? Daddy not paying enough attention to you.”
Christian poked out his bottom lip and Chris chuckled, “your sister’s been teaching you a lot more than I thought.”
“Did he hit you with the pout?” Robyn asked with a laugh.
“He definitely did.”
“I took his teddy bear this morning and he did it to me. Isn’t it cute?”
“Yea until he realizes it’s power.”
Robyn laughed, “like Anesa has with you.”
Chris rolled his eyes, “whatever.”
“Our daughter has you wrapped around her finger and you know it.”
“She’s just like her mama.”
“I am not spoiled.”
“Yea. Right.”
“Well if I am spoiled, it’s your fault.”
“Whatever.”
Robyn chuckled, “you decide what you want for dinner?”
“Isn’t it a little early?”
“I’m in a cooking mood so I’d rather start while I feel like it.”
“I can cook dinner, Babe.”
“I know but I’m not asking you that. I’m asking what do you want to eat for dinner?”
Chris raised his brow at her and Robyn settled her hands on her hips as she tilted her head at him, “problem?”
“Nope.”
A big smile came over his face and Robyn’s brow furrowed in confusion, “why you smiling so wide?”
“Just realized something.”
“Something like?”
“I’ll tell you later.”
“Ok,” Robyn said softly, “you know what you want?”
“Oxtails.”
“Yellow rice or rice and peas?”
“Rice and peas.”
“Macaroni and cheese or cabbage?”
“Can you do both?”
“Yup. Dessert?”
“I’ll make it. What you thinking?”
“Apple pie with ice cream sounds good.”
“I can do that.”
“Good. I’ll get the oxtails started and in the crockpot so you’ll have your space for whatever you need to do.”
“Check and see if there’s any ingredients you need, me and the kids can go to the store for you.”
“I should be good. I did want to ask you something.”
“Anything, Baby. What’s up?”
“Do you have any friends?”
“Are you serious?”
“I’m very serious. I never hear about any or see you leave to hang out or anything.”
“I do have friends but we all have busy lives so we don’t get together as much. Also I did leave most of our friends behind in LA.”
“Do you ever regret leaving LA, separate from the divorce?”
“Honestly? No. We lived there for a long time so there’s not much I missed while living there. You?”
“I don’t know. I think we spent so much time together and traveling all over the place, LA was a home base but it wasn’t home, if that makes sense.”
“I get what you mean. You ever think about going back?”
“I’ve thought about going to visit but never actively made plans.”
“We should take the kids. Go to Disneyland, show them my other profession.”
“How is the firm doing?”
“It’s going well. I haven’t had any fires that needed to be put out so other than occasional conference calls regarding budgets and project approvals, I’ve been pretty hands off.”
“You ever thought about going back to being an architect?”
“I get the chance to still be a part of the industry being on the board so I don’t feel like I totally left in a sense.”
“Understandable.I also need to know if you’re going to my gala with me.”
“Of course. I’m your forever date, remember?”
“I don’t remember agreeing to that but ok.”
Chris shook his head with a laugh, “there you go being stubborn for no reason.”
Robyn laughed, “I’m just saying that I don’t remember saying that.”
“OK Wife.”
“Ok Boyfriend.”
Chris stuck his tongue out at her while he stood up with Christian in his arms, “I’m gonna put him down for his nap then I’ll be back to help cook. Don’t start without me, I need to see how you cook these”
“Oxtails are not difficult to make.”
“For someone who’s been making them most of their life, of course not.”
“Am I giving you a cooking lesson?”
“You could call it that.”
“I think you just want to be up under me.”
“Up under you and a whole lot more.”
“You lucky he’s still an infant and not repeating you just yet.”
“I got some time before we have to start speaking in code.”
“You’re silly.”
Chris left down the hall while Robyn began rummaging through the freezer.
“Ok, you can put the peppers in now,” Robyn instructed as she glanced over into the crockpot. Chris gathered a pile of chopped green pepper and dumped them into the vessel, “those aren’t chopped too big?”
“Nah, it’s gonna stew for a couple hours so they’ll break down. If we diced them to start with, they’ll disintegrate by time the food was done.”
“Oh, that makes sense.”
“So what exactly do you know how to cook?”
“Anything as long as I got the recipe.”
“You don’t cook from memory?”
“Some stuff, mainly stuff I’ve been eating the majority of my life but everything else, I need a recipe.”
“And here I was all impressed, thinking you were cooking from memory or something.”
“It was still good though.”
“It was but we’ll work on that part.”
“What part?”
“Learning to cook from the heart and not from a cookbook or Google search.”
“That sounds way easier than it is.”
“I think you’ll catch on quick. So earlier, what was that big smile all about?”
“What smile?”
“When I was asking you about what you wanted for dinner.”
“Just reminded me of when we were first married. You get pretty feisty once you get comfortable with someone.”
“I’ve always been comfortable with you.”
“No you haven't, especially since we were kind of pushed into the next step of the relationship before either of us were ready.”
“What you mean?”
“We had only been seriously dating for a few weeks then suddenly we’re moving in together. I’m sure that was not part of your plan at the time.”
“I honestly didn’t have a plan. You were the one ready to get married again.”
“Getting married again and having a baby are two totally different plans.”
“Another baby wasn’t in the plans?”
“Considering your age, I wasn’t exactly sure if you wanted to try for biological children, that’s why I never brought it up.”
“We never talked about kids?”
“No. Nesa asked you about it once but other than that, the discussion never came up. And that was before we were even dating.”
“We didn’t talk about a lot of stuff.”
“Not exactly my fault though.”
Robyn cut her eye at Chris and he shrugged his shoulders, “you had me walking on eggshells and you know it.”
“That was never my intention.”
“I know.”
“You know you could’ve broken up with me at some point.”
“That was never an option.”
“Why?”
“I trust you and your judgment, you know when you’re tripping and will adjust accordingly. It’d be stupid as hell to break up over something that’s easy to fix.”
“I guess.”
“Did you want to break up with me?”
“I didn’t even want to get back with you in the first place, remember?”
“Actually you did but you were afraid to, not the same thing.”
“Fear was the reason. Not dating was the action. You and your semantics again.”
Chris laughed as he grabbed a bottle of juice out of the fridge.
“What’s so funny?”
“You’re being feisty again.”
“You’re annoying.”
Chris chuckled as he walked over to her and leaned against the counter next to her. Robyn rolled her eyes as she placed the seasoned meat into the crockpot and put on the lid. She set it to high then turned to face Chris, “so what do you wanna do until dinner?”
“Let’s keep talking about this feisty attitude of yours.”
“I’d rather not,” Robyn pointed a wooden spoon in his direction, “and if that smirk turns into a laugh, I’ma pop you in the head with this spoon.”
“Now you’re threatening me? Oh, I should definitely start planning our wedding.”
“You get on my nerves.”
“And you love me.”
“You’re just a glutton for punishment.”
“Considering I dish it and don’t take it, I will disagree with that.”
“The lies.”
“I got some clips that say otherwise.”
“Shut up.”
Chris took a sip of his juice, “if you were to get married again, do you want a wedding or just a reception?”
“Neither. I’d rather just skip to the  honeymoon.”
“You wouldn’t want to celebrate?”
“Been there. Done that.”
“Wouldn’t hurt to make new memories though.”
“I just don’t want the theatrics. An uneventful proposal and marriage day works. Simple works just fine for me”
“Really?”
“Yea. What? You over there taking notes?”
“No, just asking questions.”
“I already know you’re gonna propose to me so you don’t have to play coy.”
“I’m not proposing tonight therefore I’m not playing coy.”
“Would you want a ceremony?”
“Something simple to mark the moment, yes.”
“Hmm…”
“Why you say it like that?”
“Just thinking. You wanna take a nap? The babies are still asleep.”
“Sure. Bedroom or couch?”
“Couch, it’s closer to the kitchen for when I gotta periodically check on the food.”
“Works for me.”
“When are you gonna make the pie?”
“About two hours or so before dinner, apple pie is better when it’s warm.”
“That’s true.”
“You gonna help me bake?”
“Considering my dessert resume only has pound cake on it, I’ll learn from you.”
Chris smiled then took another sip of juice.
“You and these damn smirks. What now?”
“Feisty then submissive. Just observing.”
“I am so over you right now.”
Robyn tossed the kitchen towel she was holding onto the counter and left out the kitchen with Chris’s laughter following her.
                                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Chris, what are you doing here? I thought you had a class today,” Robyn said as she opened her office door. Chris held up a to-go bag from her favorite BBQ place and smiled, “I came to have lunch with my wife and today’s my free day, remember?”
“It definitely is. Well, this is nice. I was just thinking about you.”
“You were? About what?”
Robyn shrugged her shoulders as she grabbed napkins and plastic utensils from the basket underneath her coffee table. Chris sat down on the couch next to her as she handed him some wet wipes.
“Nothing specific. You just crossed my mind.”
“Should I be concerned?”
“Have you done something concerning?”
“No.”
“Then you don’t have to be concerned.”
Chris rolled his eyes and Robyn laughed, “forever the smart ass.”
“You asked. I answered. So what did you bring me to eat?”
“Chicken, hushpuppies and macaroni and cheese. Oh, and a Pepsi.”
“You are ruining my diet.”
“You aren’t on a diet.”
“Precisely my point, I can’t start with you feeding me like this.”
Chris laughed, “you don’t need to diet. As long as your doctor says you're healthy, the rest is welcomed to stay.”
“You just like my fat ass, you can say it.”
“You already did”
Robyn gasped and hit his arm, “you weren’t supposed to agree.”
“That ass is fat. I don’t know how you meant it but I know how I mean it and it’s perfect to me.”
“Whatever.”
“Do you really wanna lose weight or do you think I have a problem with your weight?”
“I don’t think you have a problem with my weight, considering how you always rubbing on my butt, hips and love handles, I’m getting the sense you’re enjoying it.”
Chris grinned at her and Robyn rolled her eyes, “but I’m still personally on the fence about it. I’m not as self-conscious but I’m still getting used to it.”
“Understandable. Well, since we’re talking about things you might still be on the fence about, I figured I’d get this question out of the way.”
“I know you are not proposing to me right now.”
“And if I was?”
“Chris, I am at work and sitting in front of you with Bbq sauce all over my hands and maybe on my face.”
Chris smiled as he used a napkin to wipe the corner of her mouth, “and you’ve never looked more beautiful to me.”
“This can’t be the moment. This is ghetto.”
Chris laughed, “This is not ghetto. This is real. This isn’t about having some spectacular story to tell because I think everything about our journey has been spectacular. I’ve always wanted to believe that you’d come back into my life and for seven years I was deathly afraid to but God and fate saw fit to bring you back to me in a manner that I never imagined. It gave us both clarity and allowed us to remedy a situation that honestly never ended, it just stopped. Robyn Rihanna Fenty Brown, I would be honored if you would be my wife again.”
“Oh my god, I need a napkin.”
Chris chuckled as he grabbed some wipes and gingerly wiped her hands, “better?”
“A little. I still think this is a bit unorthodox but...I’m completely ok with it.”
“Anything else you’re completely ok with?”
“I would absolutely love to marry you again.”
Chris grabbed her face and kissed her deeply before hugging her tightly, “I love you.”
“I love you too. Now where’s my ring?”
“I don't have it.”
“How you gonna propose with no ring?”
“I didn’t say I didn’t get a ring. I said I don’t have it, meaning it’s not on my person.”
“So where is it?”
“You got it.”
“How would I have it?”
Chris smirked and Robyn hit his shoulder, “Christopher. Stop playing.”
“I’m not playing. You have your ring.”
“I did pawn our last ring.”
“I know and I wouldn’t use that one even if you did still have it.”
“Chris, where is my ring?”
Chris wiped his hands then walked over to Robyn’s desk and grabbed the new marble art piece that was sitting beside her phone. Robyn’s brow furrowed as Chris brought it over to the coffee table. She became more confused as he turned it upside down and pulled out a silicone plug. He shook it lightly and something wrapped in a white cloth fell into the palm of his hand. He placed the silicone plug back then set the art piece down on the table before turning to face Robyn. He carefully unwrapped the white cloth and a large marquise shaped diamond set into a platinum band that was covered in smaller circular diamonds glistened in his hand.
“Your hand, please?”
Robyn shakingly put out her left hand and Chirs slipped the ring onto her ring finger, “Robyn Fenty Brown, will you marry me?”
She nodded her head as she wiped the tears from falling down her face, “Christopher, it’s so beautiful.”
“I did good, huh?”
“You did but how long was that ring in that piece?”
“Since the day I mailed it to you.”
“So what would’ve happened if you proposed somewhere, not my office?”
“That was never the plan.”
“You planned this? I am not even dressed up or nothing.”
“Because I wanted it to be about us, not fancy dinners and stuff, which there is nothing wrong with, but we’ve also done that already. I thought you would appreciate me not making a huge spectacle of it.”
“I do but I’m also a little caught off-guard.”
“You just knew I was gonna propose in front of the Empire State Building or something with fireworks, huh?”
“I was anticipating it.”
Chris laughed, “are you happy?”
“I am very happy.”
“Good.”
“We’re getting married again?”
“We’re getting married again.”
“EEK!” Robyn squealed as she jumped into his lap and kissed him, “I love you, Christopher.”
“I love you too.”
Love Is Blind: Chapter Twenty-Three
Chris turned over in the bed and frowned as he felt an empty space next to him. Robyn had to have been gone for a minute because the sheet was cold. He ran his hand over his head before he climbed out of the bed. Slipping his feet into a pair of slippers and pulling a t-shirt over his head, Chris made his way out of the bedroom. The smell of bacon hit his nose as he reached the top of the stairs. He quickly made his way to the kitchen and walked in just as Robyn pulled a pan of muffins out of the oven. He cleared his throat and Robyn smiled over at him, “a little early for you, ain’t it?”
Robyn chuckled, “Good morning Babe. I figured I’d make breakfast since I was up anyway. Did I wake you?”
“No. I rolled over to cuddle you and the bed was empty. I got nervous.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to make you worry. I’m good. Just wanted to do something nice, that’s all.”
“It smells good.”
“Thank you. I was gonna bring some upstairs to you so we could eat together before the kids woke up.”
“We can still make that happen. What do you still need to do?”
“Just make the plates and put the rest in the oven to keep warm for the kids.”
“I can help.”
“You don't have to do that, Babe.”
“I want to.”
Chris walked over to her and kissed her lips, “thank you for this.”
“You haven’t even eaten yet.”
“Doesn’t matter. The intent is enough for me.”
Robyn smiled as she leaned in to kiss him, “you are trouble.”
Chris chuckled as he moved over to the sink and washed his hands, “point me to where I need to be.”
Within a few minutes, they were sitting on the enclosed back porch, eating breakfast. Robyn cut a piece of pancake and dipped into the small puddle of syrup on the side of her plate then held it out to Chris. He ate the piece then kissed her cheek.
“Eww...now I got syrup on my face.”
“I can always lick it off.”
“Nope. You just trying to be fresh now.”
Chris laughed as he sat his own plate on the nearby coffee table. He took Robyn’s plate from her and set it next to his on the table before grabbing her around the waist to pull her into his lap. Robyn giggled as she settled back against his chest, “what are you doing now?”
“I just want to hold you, that’s all.”
“Well then let me turn around.”
Robyn got up then turned around to saddle Chris’s lap. He wrapped his arms around her and rested his hands on the top of her butt. Robyn put her arms around his neck and pecked his lips, “much better.”
“Now who’s being the troublemaker?”
Robyn giggled as she pressed her forehead against his, “what’s our plans for today?”
“You keep moving in my lap like this, I’ma turn on some cartoons for the kids and lock you up in our bedroom for a few hours.”
“You are silly. I’m serious.”
“Depends on if you wanna stay on the grounds or go exploring.”
“We can go out for the day.”
“Ok, there’s a zoo I think the kids will love, then we can just wing it from there.”
“Works for me.”
“Mommy! Daddy! Look at the baby goat,” Anesa exclaimed as the park attendant led her into the animal gate. The attendant handed Chris a  plastic sandwich bag full of food pellets. Chris poured a small amount in Anesa’s palm and instructed her to hold out her hand, “just wait a second and the goat will come to you. Just remain calm, Nesa.”
Anesa steadied her hand just as the goat came to sniff at her palm. The animal moved tentatively closer before he began nibbling at the pellets. Anesa held her other hand to her mouth as she giggled. Robyn smiled as she snapped a few pictures of the moment, “Nesa Boo, watch your hand near his mouth.”
“Yes Mommy.”
Chris glanced over at Robyn before leaning over to kiss her temple. “You seem to be enjoying this as much as the kids are.”
“Anesa is loving it. Christian has been asleep this entire time.”
Chris chuckled as he peeked under the blanket covering the carrier affixed to the front of Robyn’s body. Christian was fast asleep with his thumb in his mouth.
“I hope that doesn’t become a habit,” Chris murmured as he kissed the baby’s forehead then placed the blanket back over his head.
“He’ll be alright. You think of where we’re going to eat lunch?”
Chris shrugged as he poured more food pellets into Anesa’s hand, “depends on what you would like to eat. There’s a couple steak places we can try.”
“Sounds good.”
“You know what you want to do tomorrow?”
“Depends on what we do tonight.”
Chris raised his brow in shock and Robyn laughed, “are you starting with me because it’s too early for you to be starting with me?”
“It is never too early, Christopher.”
“If that’s the case, steak restaurant has been scratched from the plans.”
“What? We still have to eat.”
“Oh we’re gonna eat, just not in a restaurant.”
“So what are you saying?”
“You know exactly what I’m saying especially since I can’t say it out loud.”
Robyn laughed as she leaned into his shoulder, “and you call me a troublemaker.”
“You started that first.”
“Whatever.”
“Daddy, I need more food,” Anesa said as she made her way back to the fence. Chris poured the last bit of pellets into her hand, “alright Love Bug, after this we’re gonna see a few more animals then go eat dinner.”
“Can we have pizza, Daddy?”
“Sure. We’ll pick up some pizza on the way. Anything else?”
“And ice cream?”
“We’ll get some ice cream to go too.”
“Yay! Thank you!”
Anesa kissed his cheek before running back over to the attendant to feed the baby goat she was standing with.
                                        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Robyn hummed as she stepped out of the shower and wrapped a plush towel around her waist then another around her head. Just as she opened the closet door, her phone rang. She grabbed it and slid over the answer button, “hello?”
“Hey Sis.”
“Le, what’s going on?”
“Nothing much. Just bored and pregnant,” Leandra replied, “you?”
“About to get dressed. Just got out the shower.”
“Oh ok.”
“Something wrong?”
“No. Max is at work and Maxwell is asleep so it’s just me up right now.”
“Well it’s still early, there’s nothing on TV?”
“I’ve watched all the shows, I swear and Netflix is no damn help.”
Robyn chuckled, “I’m sorry. I wish I could help.”
“But you can’t. Where’s my brother?”
“He’s making us a late dinner. We’ve been out at the zoo with the kids all day.”
“That’s so cute. How are they?”
“They’re good. They both went down pretty easy so I hopefully they stay sleep.”
“Hope so too. Their parents need to work on getting their groove back.”
“It is not like that.”
“Well it should be. Y’all got almost a year of fucking to make up for.”
“Leandra!”
“What? You know I’m right.”
“I cannot with you.”
“But you can with your husband.”
“He is not my-”
“Girl, whatever. Tell somebody who doesn't know any better. He proposed yet?”
“No. We both know we aren’t ready to go there yet.”
“You mean you aren’t ready to go there.”
“Same thing.”
“Not exactly.”
“Le.”
“What? I need something to do and planning your wedding would be perfect so hurry the hell up.”
“If we do get married again, I’m not having a wedding.”
“What? Why?”
“We’ve already did that part. It wouldn’t be about that anyway.”
“At least let me plan a reception.”
“There’s nothing to plan, Le.”
“Well hurry up so there can be. This pregnancy is driving me insane.”
“How is my niece or nephew?”
“They are fine.”
“They as in you aren’t telling us the gender yet or they as in there’s more than one?”
“There’s more than one.”
“You’re having twins? Yes!”
“I am petrified.”
“Why?”
“What the hell am I going to do with two babies? That’s too much.”
“It’s just perfect. Le, you’re gonna do fine.”
“All I know is my uterus is closed for business. I am getting my tubes tied after this.”
“Whatever works for you.”
“And what about you?”
“What about me?”
“Any more babies?”
“No. I don’t want to go through anymore surgeries right now but I’m definitely not having anymore kids. That last pregnancy took me out.”
“I understand. Well you and Christopher better be careful.”
“We are very careful.”
“So what’s the plan for tonight?”
“Far as I know, just dinner but he always has something up his sleeve.”
“Well I’ma let you get to it. When you coming back?”
“Probably Monday. He has a class on Tuesday.”
“Cool.”
“I’ll take Tuesday off and bring the kids by to check on you. I need to see that belly.”
“Oh God, don’t mention the belly. I am so fucking fat.”
Robyn laughed, “I love you Le.”
“Love you too, Sis. Enjoy your night.”
“I will. And you get some sleep, please.”
“Will do. Bye Sis.”
“Bye Le.”
Robyn hung up and tossed her phone back on the bed. She squeezed the towel that was wrapped around her hair before pulling it off and tossing it into the hamper. She moved to ruffle through the outfits she had hanging in the closet and decided on a short spaghetti strap dress. It was fitted without being tight, giving her a modicum of comfort. Tossing the hanger with the dress on it on the bed, she grabbed her body cream and sat down on the bed to put it on.
“Underwear or no underwear?” she murmured to herself.
After a few moments, she held the dress up to her body in the mirror then slipped it over her head. She turned to see her backside and smirked, “definitely no underwear.”
“There you are. I was getting ready to come upstairs and get you,” Chris remarked as Robyn walked into the kitchen.
“I had to take a shower. I felt all sticky from being outside all day.”
“Not a problem. I like that dress. It’s cute.”
“Thank you. I didn’t want to get too fancy since we weren’t leaving the house.”
“You’re beautiful in absolutely anything.”
“I could put on a garbage bag and you’d probably say that.”
“Probably be the sexiest garbage bag I’ve ever seen.”
Robyn laughed as she leaned into his side. Chris wrapped his arm around her waist and kissed her temple, “you ready to eat?”
“What are we having, Master Chef?”
“We are having honey glazed salmon, roasted asparagus with crispy garlic smashed potatoes and sparkling grape juice since you can’t drink alcohol yet.”
“That’s the dinner we had on the day you proposed to me. You really cooked or did you order?”
“I cooked. It was one of the first dishes I wanted to learn how to make when I took cooking classes as one of my therapy assignments.”
“Now I feel like I should’ve dressed up a bit more.”
“You look perfect. I really do like that dress.”
“You sure?”
“Positive. I’m not dressed up either.”
Robyn gave him a long look then smiled up at him, “definitely a bit more dressed up than me. Is that another shirt that I bought?”
“The one when we went on vacation to Italy.”
“We went on a lot of trips that first year.”
“We did. We never made it to the Maldives though.”
“We could always go when we get the chance. Probably once the babies are older”
“We don’t have to wait. Winter break is always a good time to go.”
“I don’t know if I’ll want to be that far from them just yet.”
“Such a Mommy.”
Robyn chuckled as she nudged his shoulder, “you made me one.”
“I did. You ready to eat?”
“Yes Sir.”
Chris pulled out a chair from the dining table and Robyn sat down. He moved to the oven and started to put the serving platters of food on the table. He poured juice into their wine classes before taking his seat perpendicular to Robyn’s seat. She carefully smoothed the wrinkles from the table cloth, “Chris?”
“Yes?”
“Are you gonna propose to me again?”
“Not tonight.”
“Ok.”
“You really don’t have to worry about me springing a proposal on you every time I do something fancy. I just wanted to remember how much fun we had the first time. Just some nostalgia. That’s all.”
“Ok.”
 “I’m starting to think that you’re warming up to this marriage thing.”
Robyn shrugged, “it’s not as scary as it was to me.”
“That’s good. As long as you’re thinking about it.”
“I don’t want to but-”
“You so nervous I’m gonna propose all the time, you can’t not think about it.”
“I guess you could say that.”
Chris laughed as he rubbed the back of her hand, “you know you could definitely start calling me your husband, It could ease your anxiety.”
“Or make it worse.”
“Really? Why?”
“That makes it sound real.”
“It is real, Ms. Fenty-Brown.”
Robyn rolled her eyes as Chris emphasized the “Brown” on the end of her last name, “I carry your name still, I remember.”
“Exactly so I don’t know why you acting like this is so brand new to you”
“I haven’t had a husband in eight years, Christopher.”
“Physically. Emotionally is a totally different thing.”
Robyn rolled her eyes, “you love your semantics, don’t you?”
“When they highlight truth, yes.”
Robyn laughed, “can you just fix my plate so we can eat?”
“Are you claiming defeat, Robyn?”
“I am officially waving the white flag. For now.”
Chris smiled as he leaned over and kissed her lips, “you are so stubborn.”
“You don’t have on underwear,” Chris remarked in slight disbelief as he ran his hands down Robyn’s backside. She was straddling his lap as they sat on the enclosed back porch. It had become their pseudo spot while they were at the cabin.
Robyn laughed as she shifted her weight in his lap, “I’m surprised it took you so long to notice.”
“That ass been jiggling all night, I just assumed you had on a thong or something. You don’t usually go commando.”
She shrugged as she rubbed the back of her neck, “Just in the mood, I guess.”
“You’ve been rubbing your neck all night. You ok?”
“It just feels a little stiff,” she noticed Chris’s body language change, “not like that. I’m not having another seizure, promise. I think I slept on it wrong.”
“Let me see,” Chris replied as he carefully cupped the sides of her neck. He gently massaged each side using just his fingertips. Robyn groaned in satisfaction as she let her neck relax back into his hands. Chris chuckled lightly, “lean forward for me, Baby.”
Robyn leaned forward and pressed her forehead against Chris’s. He smiled, “Hi.”
“Hi Boyfriend.”
“Stubborn ass.”
Robyn laughed then kissed his lips.
“Just close your eyes and relax. You’re really tense around your shoulders.”
Robyn moved to press her cheek to his as Chris continued to gently massage around her neck and shoulders. He carefully tapped his fingertips along her spine and she sighed shakily. Chris continued for a few more minutes, “feel better?”
“I see why massages always end in sex.”
Chris laughed, “why you say that?”
“It’s sexual as hell.”
“Or you’re just kinky as hell and like me wrapping my hand around your neck.”
“That could be it too.”
Chris laughed again as he shifted Robyn in his lap, “how about we take advantage of the jacuzzi and I give you a real massage afterwards?”
“That sounds good.”
“Good.”
“Oh my god,” Robyn moaned as she leaned back against the jacuzzi wall, “Babe, we need one of these at the house.”
“You really want one because I’ll get it for you.”
“You don’t have to be so sweet all the time, Christopher.”
“I’m just saying that I have no problem getting one installed for you.”
“Thank you but I’m just being extra.”
Chris shrugged, “Sit up so I can sit behind you.”
Robyn scooted forward as Chris climbed into the tub behind her. She rested her back against his chest and Chris settled his arms over her shoulders, “what did you put in it here? It smells good.”
“It’s bath oil. Helps soften the skin and it smells good.”
“I’m starting to think you’ve done this before.”
“Google is man’s best friend.”
“What else has Google gave you an idea about?”
“Now if I told you that, I wouldn’t be able to surprise you anymore.”
“Now that, I doubt.”
Robyn shifted against his midsection and Chris groaned before he could catch himself, “I’m sorry, Baby. Did I hurt you?”
“The opposite.”
“Oh well then,” She pressed closer and could his erection resting against her back, “it would be very easy to do something about that.”
“I didn’t do this for that.”
“Never said you did but I’m definitely doing this for that.”
She carefully moved his arms to settle on the edge of the jacuzzi as she carefully turned around to straddle his waist. She stroked his erection for a few moments before she sat on it in one quick drop.”
“Shiii-” Chris hissed through clenched teeth. Robyn giggled as she wrapped her arms around his neck, “feel better?”
“You are dangerous, Woman.”
“And you feel so good right now.”
“I haven’t moved yet.”
“You really don’t have to. You are settled in the perfect spot.”
“Sometimes I think you like him more than me.”
“I wouldn’t want him without you. My heart and body don't work that way.”
“Glad to hear it. May I move now?”
“Yes.”
Chris grabbed her hips and started to push upward as she pressed down. The pace soon quickened and water started to slosh over the side of the tub. Robyn tucked her face into his neck and bit down on his skin.
“Damn it, you feel so good,” Robyn murmured as she gripped the edge of the tub and Chris slid into her from behind. This guttural moan slipped from between his lips as their skin smacked against each other and more water sloshed around them.
“Oh God, Chris, I’m cumming.”
“I’m right there. Come with me, Baby.”
“Mmmm….I can feel it.”
“I’m right here. Just let it go. I got you.”
“Oh MY GOD!”
Robyn bit down on her lip as she felt her body start to convulse. Chris gripped her body tightly around her waist and leaned into her as he felt her walls tighten and her lose grip. He lifted her up and held her back against his chest as the tremors continued through her body. He murmured soft words against her ear as he waited for her body to calm itself, “Just breathe for me, Sweetie. Just deep breaths.”
Her breathing started to slow. Her body started to relax. Chris pressed a palm to her stomach and to her chest, carefully measuring her heartbeat.
“There you go, Sweetie. Nice and easy.”
A few moments passed and Chris kissed her cheek, “you ok?”
“I’m ok.” Robyn replied softly, “I didn’t expect it to hit me like that.”
“I’m just glad I know the difference between your orgasms and your seizures.”
Robyn giggled as she took a few breaths, “Sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. That’s exactly what we both needed.”
“I don’t want to make you nervous about stuff like this.”
“I’m not nervous. I know I have to be prepared for the unexpected. You’re worrying too much.”
Chris kissed her cheek then turned her face to look at him, “I’m not nervous. I’m not scared. I’d never intend to fuck you into a seizure but I won’t be embarrassed if I do.”
Robyn pinched his side and Chris yelped, “OUCH! What was that for?”
“For being conceited.”
“I am not conceited. I am confident in my abilities as I should be.”
“There you go with your semantics again.”
Chris laughed as he kissed her lips, “I love you, Wife.”
“Whatever, Boyfriend.”
“Stubborn ass.”
Robyn laughed as she pulled his arms around her to hold her tight, “we might need to get out, the water is getting cold.”
“In a minute. I like holding you like this.”
Robyn smiled as she rested her head on his chest.
