Today's rescue was a tiny philodendron atabapoense, from Bunnings. $5.67, taken down to $2 for poor condition. I trimmed some mangled leaves when I got him home and gave him a tiny support, and now we will see. For $2 I am absolutely willing to try to rehab a plant I kind of wanted. :>
Also got a kalanchoe goblin and a black pagoda lipstick vibe, the latter of which was also marked down - it was half the size of the other, so obviously the vines had been cut or broken. Very pleased!

plant news beneath the cut, bc they are absolutely my obsession rn.
i got a monkey tail cactus last year, around winter i think?? i bought just one tiny one in a pot, which was mostly upright, which is why i got it. i wanted to see how long before it started drooping fully lol. (i also didn't want to get several plants bc i wanted to make sure it would grow instead of die tbh)
anyway, fast forward to now, and it's grown a lot. like, i think it's around 4x longer than when i got it???? it's a liiiitle varied in thickness along its length, but all healthy good-looking growth. that said, even though it's probably around a foot in length now, it actually still holds itself up, although the length basically runs parallel to the ground, which is hilarious and interesting at the same time.
it's been worrying me lately, bc it's put all its energy into its stem and just got longer and longer without doing anything else, but today i took a look and there's FINALLY growth at the base!!!!!! it's the world's smallest pup rn, i could hardly even see it, but there's a teeny tiny nob growing at the base of the plant. that's so exciting. once it gets a bit of size, like an inch or 2, i'll repot it - i was going to repot right before i noticed the growth, in case the tiiiiiny pot it was in was restricting it (it's literally in the original seedling-sized pot i bought it in).
in other plant news, i am a terrible carnivorous plant parent and today i sat my serracenia purpurea down for a much-needed trim. i left the flowers on it from the beginning bc they were stunning, but i've had so many issues w humidity and i think it's very very sensitive to a watering schedule (i never meant to let the saucer it's in go dry, but it has happened semi-frequently w the hot australian summer and since i need to boil and cool the water before i can use it since the plant needs purified water, it's struggled). sooooo, a lot of the pitchers (are they still called that on this? i think so) had turned brown and dry. for the most part, i only removed fully dry brown bits. then i cleaned off a bug lamp and dropped all the tiny little bug carcasses into the pitchers. lol. it mostly lives indoors where it's easier for me to manage the humidity, so the plant probably never got enough food. anyway, it's only the middle of summer so it's got months left before i need to trim it back and let it go dormant, so i tidied it up and fed it, and i'll get some fish food for the plant too, to keep up with more regular feeding.
other things i need to do are fertilise all my plants, especially the monsteras and calatheas. i haven't fertilised at all yet, except slow-release probably last done in early spring, and that needs to change. they're going... fine? but they could be going so much better, and you're meant to fertilise them all regularly in spring and summer so they grow more. oops.
i need to tidy up the snake plant in water, too. it's still fairly happy, but i need to change the water out and check the height of the water, bc i think i need to keep more of it out of water so as to prevent rot.
last thing i need to do, for now, is make sure i have space and a good light setup!!!! bc this week i should get a plant delivery i bought for my birthday lol (1 of 2), which i'm v excited about. i should be receiving a philodendron white princess, philodendron billietae, oxalis volcanicola zinfandel and a mini mon / rhaphidophora tetrasperma cutting. ergo, i will need to ensure a pot for each plant (i planned on giving the oxalis to mum but might take care of it inside first, and maybe make some cuttings she can then plant in the garden, bc i know she'll love the foliage) and i'll have to propagate the mini mon, probably in water, which is my preferred method so far.
the other order, which should get here next week, has a marimo ball (!!!!!), variegated dragon tail plant (epipremnum pinnatum variegata), philodendron subhastatum (another one i thought mum should like a lot), hoya carnosa purple pride, alocasia cuprea (worried about this one lol, i didn't want to get a new alocasia until i work out how to make the damn things not just survive but thrive, but here i am) and a loose cryptanthus desert star. the last was meant to be a gift for my uncle, who now will not be back for around 6 weeks, so i guess we'll see?? i'll need to look up care requirements in the meantime. (ohhhh, it's a bromeliad, he'll LOVE it. i didn't realise lol. i just thought it looked like something he would like, and i was so right.)
apart from all that, i've really just been resisting buying anything more atm. i saw some great plants at a plant store the other day but didn't get any, bc they were far too expensive and none were particularly wishlist plants, esp at the prices they were at. i want to check out all the bunnings around me on a regular basis, bc i've seen some pretty amazing rare varieties there (kicking myself over not getting a monstera la esqueleto the other week, but them's the breaks). i'd rather just keep an eye out at bunnings for different varieties, since they're cheaper than nurseries (although never as good condition) and more of a range, although it's pot luck. i doubt i'll find one of my strap leaf anthuriums i want, but that's fine. i'll buy one eventually - i have so far made myself not buy a vittariifolium, but might go ahead and buy one anyway in march.
