somewhere in the midst of a very lively dinner preparation , a dear friend had slipped away & of course , anne excuses herself to discover a parallel of herself at her worst . when she crouches beside annette , wipes away those tears & inquires their source , she can only smile into a heaving shoulder . “ & why would we be anything but to a fellow kindred spirit ? ” arms tighten around petite frame & she can recall many a time when such a great abundance of love & warmth had coaxed her own tears to fall . “ there is no shame in crying here , dear annette , i’ve certainly shed enough to fill oceans . ”
annette can’t help but feel a good deal pathetic for crying at a show of kindness. it isn’t that she was at all upset by it. she only realized that it wasn’t familiar, + that upset her deeply. (it almost makes her want to go home + never even think about coming back to visit again. she might get used to it, + then she’d really be in trouble.) “ i-i-i --- d-didn-n-n’t w ... wan-nt you t-t-to th--think -- i-it’s-s your-r f-faul-lt -- ”

the image before her is sweeter than her favorite toffees ; anne strokes the chick with a finger before placing it back into its enclosure & retrieves her phone , snaps a picture of the moment for prosperity . “ oh , not to worry , there’s plenty more where that came from ! besides , ” belle’s saddle & reigns are hauled from the barn , the former placed on a strong back with a grunt of effort . “ i’m positive you’ll permit them to visit ! ” in goes the bit . anne hoists herself up , then to offer a hand to her friend . “ you’ll have to bid the little darlings farewell for now , though – adventure awaits ! ”
annette’s eyes widen a little, looking up at the much larger animal. she recalls once, long ago, riding a horse fairly often. but that was a long time ago, when she was even littler. that was when she’d climb trees just to hide away, without fear. theoretically, a horse should not be at all worrying after that. but of course, annette is now made of the worry most children gleefully lack. however, the curly-haired girl takes her friend’s hand, putting one foot in the stirrup + all but vaulting herself onto the back of the horse. “ w-w-what-t t-t-typ-pe? ”

annette doesn’t think the other quite understands what sort of fear is present. it isn’t the adrenaline type of fear, or even fight-or-flight fear. (no, either of those would be far more helpful.) it’s the freeze fear, the type of fear response that rabbits have. when she is afraid, annette freezes. she rolls over, helplessly exposing her weak points, allowing herself to be seized by the throat and shaken about like a toy in a dog’s mouth. she rubs a cold hand over her opposite wrist, bruised but only barely not sprained. she looks + feels like roadkill.
