Lydia was the only one in Season 5a who didn’t leave or betray Scott (besides Mason, I suppose, though they’re not really friends the same way yet. And Kira didn’t leave of her own choice, so please don’t think I’m implying that.) It’s strange, but Lydia has actually been the one consistently believing in Scott as an alpha and as a leader since the very beginning. She figured out pretty quickly he was good at lacrosse and demanded he play to keep the team winning. She’s constantly reminding Scott he’s an alpha and strong enough to face things, like when they saved Stiles from the Nogitsune and when she told him to roar. She keeps getting separated from the group when things get terrible because her banshee premonitions are always about Scott. She was specifically kept out of the way at the end of S4 so no one knew she kept hearing Scott die and the same by Theo in S5a. Her faith in Scott is so strong, that Derek tells the twins. Lydia doesn’t stay and fight for Stiles, she stays for SCOTT. Lydia doesn’t believe all monsters (including herself) are evil, because Scott proves they can all be good.

Scott has also believed in Lydia more than any other person has other than Allison. He never put her on a pedestal or thought he had a right to her time, like Stiles. He never thought she was stupid or ditzy like Jackson. He saw a real, genuine person beneath her facade and helped her explore that side of herself where she actually does care about others. He’s held her hand when she’s afraid because she trusts him implicitly and she’s always proud of him when he steps up (those smirks, c’mon). He promises her that he’ll do something if he just has enough time, and Lydia believes him. He makes her softer and more gentle, she keeps him focused and makes him brave. They compliment each other better than almost any other pair and they make each other better.

They have this parallel journey throughout the seasons that saw them being turned by the same monster, mind controlled by Peter, struggling to learn their powers without basically anyone to teach them, and dealing with the responsibility of death and not being able to stop it. They’ve both become monsters because of Peter and are fighting to do something good with it, no one else in the whole series has that same struggle. The only one close to it was Liam, but he wasn’t maliciously turned or controlled and had a whole caring support structure in place for him. Lydia and Scott are both alpha types, they’re both leaders and extremely charismatic. They’re both extremely bright and work hard in school, they both have been almost murdered by the baddies, they’ve both had their hearts broken, they both loved and lost Allison Argent.

Honestly, best and most underrated het pairing in the entire fandom.
