Howdy, it's been a while! As soon as I saw this beautiful Filip Burburan piece (artist of four wurm cards!) I was looking forward to seeing what this card did. I'm shocked it isn't a common (it's our first rare wurm in Standard since Brother's War, two years ago), but I'm equally shocked at the raw efficiency of this monster!
It is nicely keeping in tradition with Colossal creatures all having exclusively 5s and/or 6s in their stat boxes though, appreciated.
It feels a tad odd that this doesn't fit the bill of a "rattlesnake card" (card that sits around as a known quantity waiting for an opponent to do something threatening that prompts it to pounce) but flash feels appropriate. If this somehow ends out the bane of a format then I guess "leaving four green open" could be rattlesnakey enough (I'll eat my cowboy hat if that happens though yeeeeehawwww)
Ramping from the 'yard is nice too, and honestly makes this a decent fit for my Wurm commander deck, provided I can find enough Deserts that are any good...

Any tips on how to deal with my obssesion with collecting uncommon two color legends?
(Seriously, there are so many cool ones. At least they are cheap.)

Eldraine was one of the last places I'd consider seeing a wurm, but look how at home it is here! The boy's out at 2pm looking for beans
Beautiful art here by Aldo Domínguez - whose MTG portfolio is all recent and very worth checking out (love the Traxos, though he'll probably be best remembered for Whiterhoof) - , nowhere near as chaotic as that Proper Noun filled flavour text implies.
Planting Beans is a very worthwhile thing to be doing on early turns if you're playing a typically mana-intensive wurm deck, and if you squint, this is an Explore that always draws the same 5/4? Reach is also underrated as a keyword, especially in one of these decks where fliers are nonexstent. All in all, I'm a fan of this card for the ways it counterracts some of the type's biggest weaknesses.

infinite combos in the context of the flavor of mtg are so funny to me. like imagine you’re dueling a wizard and they whip out a ghost in a boat and a pirate goblin and the ghost ferries the goblin over a river a billion times and that creates massive amounts of wealth which the wizard uses to hurl a fireball at your face, turning you into a pile of ash.

New Secret Lair Alert: a gorgeous new print of old favourite Worldspine Wurm, plus a new token for it! This art is a sort of creepy (and enormous) of a sort we don't see often for wurms. Is that a planet?

Don’t want to forget to mention the new wurm in March of the Machine Commander, making possibly my favourite use of the backup ability. Attack with it to get something that costs 7 or less out for free, or live the dream by backing up onto your Impervious Greatwurm to dig NINETEEN cards deep (And, disappointingly, not finding anything that costs 19)
The art on this one is unnerving to me in a way most wurms aren’t... that mouth is so wide (looks happy??)

By a fair margin the cutest wurm!
And it’ll still be cute when it’s a 7/7 with deathtouch! (as we all know, the most adorable keyword)

Yes, there’s a second wurm in The Brother’s War! And I’m sad it won’t be called Brechmaschine in English.
The text says “when this attacks, target attacking creature gets +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is this creature’s power” - notably not ‘another’ creature. So a seven-mana 4/6 is... among the worst wurms we’ve ever seen, BUT an 8/6 is something! a four-mana 4/5 isn’t too shabby either.
This one probably more has a home in artifact-centric decks than most of the artifact wurms and the lack of any keywords hurts (especially because it is, in the most literal sense, trampling, in the art) but hey, maybe Wulfgar would find it funny.
Is there any significance in how this is in the exact same pose as Pouncing Wurm? No, but it is neat. This is Filip Burburan’s fourth wurm though, wow.

New wurm! New... Phyrexian wurm...
I should have seen this coming, but here we are. Trust those lovable scamps the Phyrexians to give us probably the most pushed wurm ever printed! 7 power lifelink is ridiculous to begin with, making this card immediately compete with the best of the best life-gaining wurms. And that ward cost? That’s horrendous, mmmm.
Prototype seems interesting as a Cleave-for-creatures and/or inverse Kicker (but you get to keep the silly high mana value! Sifter Wurm loves that) and means this is also one of the cheapest-to-cast, best-statted wurms ever. Artifact synergy is, again, nice to see but it just feels a tad less like a ‘real’ wurm because of it. Still, I’m very excited to add this to the deck, but which common wurm will have to get cut for it, and how much budget will it require...

Got my Defiler of Vigor in yesterday, and though Ebay is an expensive place to buy magic cards, my favourite thing about it is seeing what random commons get chucked in to protect the spensy mythic! In this case it was a Dancing Scimitar (in beautiful white border), a foil ZNR Illusion token (I have a use for this, ayy) and...

As usual, I judge my ‘luck’ in prerelease with whether I get the common wurm from the set in any of my packs. For DMU I did not... but at least now I’m feeling lucky!
I can imagine this reasonably priced monster is a menace (or vigilancetrample, I spose) in draft! And that art is gorgeous...

I am speechless.
HE IS SO GOOD! AAA
In any self-respecting Wurm deck, this is a 1-mana Rootbreaker Wurm every turn, on top of buffing the rest of your board. And he only costs 4 to cast himself! The art is lovely, he’s standing on a Serpentine... this is a good day for the best tribe in Magic :)

After a wurmless 9 months, there’s nothing like a little compleation to breathe new unlife into things
I feel like I don’t need to say much to justify why this is bonkers good, and immediately jumps near the top of the pile for most powerful Wurms ever.
As we know, chunky life-gain is a core part of Wurm mechanical identity (more on this later), so it easily offsets the Phyrexian mana payments. It’s also five mana! That’s like, nothing, by Wurm standards. For me, it’ll curve nicely into my Wurm commander of choice, Teneb, and becomes a 7/7 trampler on turn six, which is already ludicrous.
In four-of formats, the ability stacks- so you can have a turn 5 6/6, cast another on turn six for a 7/7 and a 6/6, then cast two (!) on turn seven for a 9/9, 8/8, 7/7 and a 6/6, for the low cost of 20 life...
+1/+1 counter strategies don’t tend to do much with Wurms, given they’re already huge and you won’t often have many of them, but it’s obviously a nice bonus and lets you be even more aggressive.
Chase Stone’s art here is haunting (the reflections on the scales are something else) and I especially enjoy/dislike the trypophobic eyes. This is probably a compleated Argothian Wurm, but it could be related to many Dominarian subpecies. The name appears to be a reference to Vigor, which also grants huge numbers of +1/+1 counters.

Hello Mark, the question about wurms activated one of my bugbears. Why was the decision made to make hydras green's signature creature over wurms, which occupied that role previously? As an unapologetic wurm apologist, I feel that they've taken a backseat role over the course of the game's history.
Wurms just haven’t ever been very popular.
