This Santa Ana event transported dust particles several hundreds of kilometers over urban areas, the Gulf of California, and the Pacific Ocean. In Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada, San Diego, and Los Angeles, PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations (particle matter with diameter below 10 µm and 2.5 µm) reached values over 2000 µg/m3 for PM10, with daily mean concentrations well above national standards, leading to poor air quality and representing a health threat even in short-term exposure. Santa Ana winds eroded large areas, transported desert conditions to urban zones, causing high dust concentrations and reducing the relative humidity below 10%, deteriorating climatic conditions favorable to wellness. Numerical modeling of a severe dust storm in November 2018, applying the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with a chemistry module (WRF-Chem), revealed that erosion, transport, and dust storms extend along the peninsula and the Gulf of California. While research has emphasized Santa Ana wind effects on the USA side, northwestern Mexico has been less investigated. In arid and semiarid regions from the southwestern USA and vast areas of northwestern Mexico, Santa Ana wind events modify the environment with high temperatures, very low humidity, and dust storms representing a recurrent phenomenon that triggers asthma and other respiratory diseases. This finding has widespread implications, given the role of spotting in fire progression during extreme wind events. We show that this is due to inherent limitations in the models themselves, related to the slope-orientation relative to the simulated fire spread, and the dependence of ember launch and land locations. However, in situations when spotting was an important factor in rapid downslope wildfire spread, both FARSITE and FlamMap were unable to simulate realistic fire perimeters. Utilization of two case studies during strong winds revealed that FARSITE was able to successfully reconstruct the spread rate and size of wildfires when spotting was minimal. Additionally, burn area rasters from FARSITE simulations were compared to minimum travel time rasters from FlamMap simulations, a wildfire model similar to FARSITE that holds environmental variables constant. High spatial-resolution imagery for fuel maps and hourly wind downscaled to 100 m were used as model inputs, and sensitivity tests were performed to evaluate the effects of ignition timing and location on fire spread.

To the best of our knowledge, no systematic overview of techniques for agent-based simulations on hardware accelerators has been given in the literature. Typically, a combination of techniques is required to achieve high performance for a given simulation model, putting substantial burden on modellers. Thus, a vast variety of approaches proposed in the literature demonstrated considerable performance gains using hardware platforms such as many-core CPUs and GPUs, merged CPU-GPU chips as well as Field Programmable Gate Arrays. Agent-based simulations, where simulated entities act with a certain degree of autonomy, frequently provide ample opportunities for parallelisation. The experimental results show that our proposed tool generated profiling information for image processing applications which assisted in achieving a speed-up ofįor heterogeneous multi-core platforms containing an FPGA and a GPU as accelerators, respectively.ĭue to decelerating gains in single-core CPU performance, computationally expensive simulations are increasingly executed on highly parallel hardware platforms. Comparison with the state- of-the-art shows that the proposed profiler has, on the average, an order of magnitude less overhead as compared to the state-of-the-art data-communication profilers for a wide range of benchmarks. In contrast to prior work, our tool not only reports detailed information, but also generates this information with manageable overheads for realistic workloads. In this work, we present the design of an open-source tool which provides such a detailed profile for C/C++ applications. Appropriate tools are required to highlight memory-access patterns and provide detailed intra- application data-communication information to assist developers in porting existing sequential applications efficiently to these architectures. Efficient utilization of these architectures demands analysis of memory-access behaviour of applications and perform data-communication aware mapping of applications on these architectures. The growing demand of processing power is being satisfied mainly by an increase in the number of homogeneous and heterogeneous computing cores in a system. This survey targets modellers seeking an overview of suitable hardware platforms and execution techniques for a specific simulation model, as well as methodology researchers interested in potential research gaps requiring further exploration.
