A cover for @barrons about the red hot real estate and construction markets, shot outside of Austin, Texas in a @tollbrothers development called Travisso. It was incredible driving through this huge development that will certainly be the size of a small town all by itself before too long and see every single lot (most of which just had foundations poured) with a sold sign out front. . . . #texasrealestate #austinrealestate #laketravisrealestate #texashillcountryrealestate #housingmarket #realestateinvesting #realeststeinvestor https://www.instagram.com/p/CXHMymrlrJp/?utm_medium=tumblr

Opening spread from the current issue of my @travelandleisure feature on Bozeman, Montana. Shot last October, but as it works with travel magazines, finally going to print a year later when the timing is perfect for a fall themed story (which turned into a fall/winter story when the years first big snowstorm arrived midway through my week of shooting). Big thanks to my friend @andyaustinphoto for being an indispensable assistant on this shoot and helping find this epic view of the Yellowstone River in Paradise Valley. #travelandleisure #travelmontana #bozeman #bozemanmontana #livingston #livingstonmontana #paradisevalley #yellowstone #yellowstoneriver (at Paradise Valley (Montana)) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUVj531Fjb0/?utm_medium=tumblr

July 2020. Our Texas to Montana road trip ends just south of the Canadian border inside Glacier National Park. With so many families having to cancel travel plans we get lucky and are able to reserve a campsite last-minute. Only one entrance to the park is open since the Blackfeet Nation had decided to close all of those that cut through their land on the east side of park, so even though the number of visitors was down, everyone was funnelling into the same area. We are surprised to find more foreign visitors in the park than Americans, but the US is in the middle of really locking things down and it seems like visiting tourists didn’t get the message. . . . #goingtothesunroad #glaciernationalpark https://www.instagram.com/p/CPn-N_MlEmT/?utm_medium=tumblr

4th of July rodeo in Lincoln, Montana, 2020. This small town rodeo is the highlight of the summer for this mountain community, but with local health officials cancelling it a few weeks beforehand it didn’t look like it would happen until pushback from the community made the county official reverse course. With not a mask in sight, it was hard to tell that anything unusual like a pandemic was going on. People looked so happy to be outside enjoying a summer tradition that has gone on for generations, and it was nice to be part of something that felt normal for a change. Shot for a @tatlermagazine and @tatlerhongkong story about traveling across America in an RV during the summer of 2020. . . . #4thofjuly #summerrodeo #montanarodeo #lincolnrodeo #tatler https://www.instagram.com/p/CPbpJ9oFhTx/?utm_medium=tumblr

We hear turkeys gobbling at sunrise. We hit the road knowing that we’d reach our destination before the end of the day, which is a really good feeling. Crossing into Montana, we pull over at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument to explore the famous story of General Custer and Crazy Horse, but the park is closed because of the virus. Across the highway, we pull into a fun-looking tourist trap called Custer Battlefield Trading Post and we soon meet the character running the place. His name is Putt Thompson and he couldn’t be friendlier. He opened the place in 1985 and says he’d never seen anything like this summer. Sales are down to a third of normal. He clearly recognizes the dilemma of wanting tourist business when the community is not ready for it. Many of his employees are Native American, and most are scared to come to work since their communities have been hit so hard by the pandemic. As we say goodbye he removes his mask to reveal a warm smile, which I’m guessing is partially from the fact that my wife and kids just bought one of everything he sold in the store. We reach the cabin late in the afternoon with the car so covered in empty wrappers, spilled cereal and strewn toys that you’d have a hard time spotting the seats that we know to still be buried under there. #pandemictravel #tatler #texastravel #rvlife #rvliving #traveltrailer #traveltrailerlife https://www.instagram.com/p/CPTrgZ6Fh4J/?utm_medium=tumblr

June 15th 2020. This morning we hear that Austin is undergoing further lockdown, with masks required everywhere in public, and groups limited to two people for susceptible populations, like my parents. We had expected the situation to get worse, just not nearly so quickly. We had done our best to think of all the possible scenarios and safety issues that traveling with our kids could bring about. We’ve packed all our meals in the cooler ahead of time, so we don’t have to stop for food, and we have a bathroom in the trailer. We stop at empty parks so the kids can burn some energy, and never have any trouble finding spots to run around or eat lunch with no one else in sight. We do question whether we are being overly cautious, since we can clearly see that half the population doesn’t seem to be giving these things any consideration, but it also just doesn’t feel that difficult to take precautions and do our part to keep ourselves distanced from other people. Right after entering Wyoming from Colorado there is a huge fireworks warehouse. We stop and I meet two men from Colorado that have been coming across the state line to buy fireworks since they were teenagers. When I stop them to say they would make for a great portrait one says, “Hell yes we would, we about to burn down the damn neighborhood with all these fireworks!” We feel lucky to be on the lonely roads, passing another car maybe only every 15 minutes. We camp at Lake DeSmet in Wyoming where there are only seven other trailers around a giant lake. We finally give in to letting the kids have way more screen time than normal, so they don’t even notice when we park at the campsite. #pandemictravel #tatler #texastravel #rvlife #rvliving #traveltrailer #traveltrailerlife https://www.instagram.com/p/COysNjIlY0l/?igshid=f9pqy3ygd97g

From a story I shot last summer on travel in a pandemic for @tatlermagazine and @tatlerhongkong. After ten hours speeding across Texas, we finally reach the state line and enter New Mexico. This corner of the state is always quiet, but as we cross the state line, we can really feel a change taking place. In Texas, maybe half the people at a gas station might have masks on, but in New Mexico people are more cautious, with signs along the highway urging people to practice safety precautions. Then in Colorado, things are busier. There’s more traffic and things just generally look more alive and bustling. Licence plates from every state east and south of this famous mountain destination fill the gas stations and rest areas. #pandemictravel #tatler #texastravel #rvlife #rvliving #traveltrailer #traveltrailerlife https://www.instagram.com/p/COsYx-6lsK-/?igshid=hlzbcuqa04vw

This trip from our home in Texas north to Montana will be our first extended journey with our new travel trailer. Google Maps predicts the trip should take 27 hours each direction, but we soon learn that what should be an 8 hour day take us 12 by the time we stop 34 times for kid bathroom breaks, snack and playtime, and the inevitable meltdowns (from both kids and parents).

Last summer during the height of the pandemic I took an assignment to drive across the US from the southern to northern border in a travel trailer to document the challenges of travel in America at this unique moment. And unlike any other assignment I’d ever had, my wife and 2 young children went along for the ride. These are the images and travelogue from the trip.
Day 1: Leaving Texas. We haven’t even passed the city limits of Austin, Texas, our home town, before our three-year-old daughter announces, “I’m done with this trip, I want out of the car!” Fifteen minutes down, 70 hours to go. This seems daunting.
It’s our first road trip with our two young children, and we’ve decided to go big, driving from Texas to Mon- tana for two months in the middle of a global pandemic that has turned any type of travel into a risk. Our fam- ily and friends think it’s nutty. But since our kids were born, we’ve spent a chunk of each summer at a cabin in the mountains outside Missoula, Montana to escape city life and the oppressive Texas sun. Now it seems we are escaping the virus. And as a photographer, I’m ready to create a document of what is happening across America at this moment.
The first thing we see is that there are more RVs on the road than normal, but overall traffic is way down as we head across Texas. A rest stop outside Amarillo is eerily al- most empty. We try to put some distance behind us, but even a 500-mile day doesn’t get us out of the state. We stop at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, a beautiful place that impresses as you suddenly find yourself standing along its rim after driving for hours across the flat plains. We’ve tried our hardest to plan out our nightly stops at some- place beautiful and interesting for the kids, who discover cacti and a snake that is a little too close for comfort.

Excited to share a video I had the chance to work on in partnership with @visit_arizona and @texasmonthly. They asked me to make a road trip through Arizona capturing the beauty of the place and talk about my work as a travel photographer, and the trip didn’t disappoint. I co-directed with cinematographer and director of photography @alonsojlujan, and like I say in the piece, both of us are looking forward to getting back and exploring more of the state soon! You can find the full video and extra still images currently running on @texasmonthly so check out the link in my bio for that feature. . . . . #visitarizona #visitarizona🌵 #arizona #visitsedona #sedona #sedonaarizona #sedonahiking #superstitionmountains #superstitionwilderness #lostdutchmanstatepark #lostdutchman #saguarolakeranch #travelphotography #travelphotographer #shootfilm #filmisnotdead #kodak (at Sedona, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9mrxndFE5I/?igshid=1heq7wv7bsmwy
