Evaluation
Overall I am pleased with the prep work of my project. I think the images are aesthetically pleasing and portray the message that I wanted them to. For most of the images, I believe I have used my artist analysis’ well to influence the outcomes but have then gone on to use my own ideas to develop the project. I am also pleased with how I have improved my photoshop skills and have used the application to achieve a variety of looks. Each photoshoot has a different style to it and I think by keeping these separate it has enhanced the appearance of the work I have done. Although I am happy with the experimentally edited images, I am disappointed with the appearance of the original photos from each shoot. I believe that individually they are neither powerful of interesting to look out however they have been useful in achieving the finished look I wanted for the experimental edits.
At the beginning, I found it difficult to be creative and gather ideas however as the project went on, I found myself being inspired by a selection of artists works and styles. I then used these as inspiration for my own work and tried to adapt them to create images that were individual. I think that my work would have improved if I had began to get into a rhythm at an earlier stage. This would have allowed me to really focus on perfecting my photos as well as the techniques I was using. It would have also resulted in a few more images that I would’ve been happy with to bulk up the project. Within this project I have used both skills learnt on previous occasions and new ones.
On the whole I am not happy with the final outcomes of my exam. Going into the exam I had a good understanding of what I wanted to do while I was in there and how I wanted to do it. Unfortunately this did not turn out to work in my favour. The initial photos for the exam were of good quality and I am disappointed that this does not come across in the end images themselves. On practice attempts, the re-photographing had come out better and the images looked sharper and the colours were pleasing to the eye. On this occasion, I was not able to replicate this and I believe this has really let my work down. Although I am pleased with the concept and ideas that I developed to back up the photographs. I thought it was creative and held a powerful message which is something I have struggled to achieve in previous projects. The editing itself was art based and was something I was more confident with and am I happy with the way they turned out as pieces of art.

Artist Analysis - Ingvar Kenne
Tumblr media
Ingvar Kenne was born in Sweden in 1965 and studied photography at the University of Gothenburg. His work has featured in many exhibitions both solo and group.
The photo was taken an average coastal setting.
To manipulate the original image, the photo was divided into different sections and then reconstructed to its original state. They were then fastened together with tape. This is used to great effect as it implies that although we try hard to reverse the damage we have done to the environment, it will never be the way it was.
When looking at this photo, I wouldn't class it as surreal. This is because I would define surreal as being something you would not be able to see in real life.
The strongest aspect of this photo is its composition. Although as a whole it resembles the original image, when you take time to notice that there has been slight movement in the sections of the photos it enhances the meaning that the photo holds. Another important aspect in the image is the use of negative space. In my opinion the majority of the photo is negative space and this has been incredibly effective. The image is plain and simple showing the beauty of the landscape it features.
I would class this image as a photograph rather than a piece of fine art.
Kenne’s work relates to my project as the techniques he has used relates heavily to the message I hope to portray through my work. This is how he tries to reinforce and put back together the photographs he has dismantled. To an outsider it would seem pointless to purposefully destroy an image you took just to eventually put it back together again. This links to my work as I hope to portray that as humans we have aided in destroying sections of the environment and world we live in and all we want to do know is try and fix it.

Inspirational images
Ingvar Kenne - His images appear simple but the reconstruction of the photo is incredibly effective.
Annegret Soltau - The re-assembly of this photograph is more dramatic and is therefore more noticeable.
Amy Friend -  This is a different approach as the initial damage to the photo is not as drastic as other techniques however it does not focus on putting all parts of the image back.
All of the above photos will inspire my final work as I have decided to manipulate my images slightly so that they are in pieces and then reconstruct them. It is important that, like these images, when finished the photograph has obvious changes to it as this will enhance the message I’m trying to convey.

Final Brainstorm
For my final set of developmental photographs, I want to try and portray the message that once you destroy the environment in any way, it is difficult if not impossible, to get it back to its original state. I will use art based methods in this set of images because I think this is more poignant. Editing on the computer is never final in terms of being able to retrieve the initial image and therefore may not be the best way to show to damage we do as a human race. To do this, the initial photographs I take must be simple to allow the editing I do to them to stand out. I will manipulate the images and then try to ‘put’ them back together again. If done well, I hope it will show that although we now realise the damage we have done to the planet, and are trying to re-establish how it was, it will never be in its original state.

Section 2 & 3
On the whole, I believe that my images portray the message that I want them to. For example, reflection is something we come across on a daily basis and are not phased by it. However, when reflection carried out on nature, it attracts our attention as not being as it should be. It may be seen as surreal or even artificial which when talking in terms of nature, is not desirable. Being too perfect is noticeable and I hope that the reflective images show that when the human race tries to recreate natural environment, it will never be as ‘natural as it should be’.
In my next set of experimental photos, I want to focus on art-based editing techniques. Not only will this be important to add a variety of techniques to my project but it also holds a more influential message then editorial photos. Editing in an art-based way, helps to shows that the effects we have on the environment are permanent and cannot be reversed. Some of the techniques I will try include sewing and cutting.

When editing these photos, I aim to show how a slight change in the appearance of nature gets your attention and looks like it is not real. I hope that this allows people to realise that change is not always good especially when it comes to issues such as the dwindling number of trees or the rising sea levels. I am going to focus of shapes and distorting the appearance of the photo. I hope that this will confuse the viewer and stimulate thoughts about it. My aim is to also use editing techniques to create a gloomy atmosphere that causes emotions within the viewer to be triggered.

Artist Analysis - Victoria Siemer
Tumblr media
Victoria Siemer a.k.a Witchoria,  is based in Brooklyn and has worked as a graphic designer for a variety of companies such as T-Mark international and Velocidi. Her digital manipulations have featured in publications such as cosmopolitan, juxtapose and the huffington post.
It is said that her inspiration for taking the landscape photos she does is driven by heartbreak and crisis. Although not obvious when you look at the images themselves, when you dive deeper into the overall message this becomes more evident. The photo features a rural setting that holds a huge amount of beauty within it.
Photoshop has been used massively in this photo along with the others in the collection. “Photoshop has given me the ability to create my own alternate realities where anything is possible. Sometimes it feels like magic.” Although the image is surreal and abnormal it is incredibly aesthetically pleasing showing a strong use of the editing software. Using photoshop in this manner has allowed Siemer to adapt the image in an effective and gentle manner allowing it to be thought provoking without overtaking the mind with the question of how it was achieved.
Siemers images are surreal in my opinion as they challenge the boundaries of what is expected of such photos as well as on earth. They capture something you would not see in real life and therefore can be classed to be somewhat surreal. The reflection/ rotation of sections of the image using geometric shapes has also been described to portray ‘portals’. This in itself would also be surreal as these portals are not things that are visible or even exist on this planet. In my opinion, this idea is clever as together with the stunning images, the ‘portal’ philosophy allows the viewer to believe they could possible enter a state of nirvana which is often associated with such portals.
The photo has a strong and powerful composition as this enables the surreal aspect to be explored. The shapes are found in the negative space of the photo and therefore become the main focus of the image. If there wasnt this negative space around the shape, there would be massive distraction and would therefore not be as effective as an image. I also believe that the soft colours in this image add to the impact that it has on the viewer as it enhances the surrealness and becomes gentle and attractive image to look at.
In my opinion, I would class this image to be more of a photograph than a piece of fine art. This is because although it has been manipulated to change the original appearance of the photo, it is not hugely complex.
As far as this photo goes to inspiring my own work, it has taught me that simplicity in this style of editing is key and that when trying to get this effect, soft colours that complement each other increase its impact. In addition, Siemers work has also allowed me to think about the message I would like my own images to portray and that it is important to explore this and the ideas you have before you take your photos. This way you can get everything you need within the photo without having to spend a long time editing it and still not ending up with the image you want.

Section 2&3
The photos I have taken for photoshoot two are not necessarily aesthetically pleasing individually and do not show a message at the moment. However, I do believe that they are perfect for the editing style I wish to carry out. I have been able to achieve the goal of taking photos that do not carry positive messages with them. For example, bare branches are less appealing that those covered with luscious green leaves of blossom.

Section 1
The photos in the photoshoot will differ from the initial images in the way that they are not as focused on capturing colour and positive connotations. Instead, they will be taken with the intention of showing a darker more dramatic environment.

Artist Analysist - Reynald Drouhin
Tumblr media
Born in 1969, Reynald Drouhin is a French artist who focuses on a variety of creative activities including photography and sculpture.
This photo features a coastal environment. For me, this not only portrays the undeniable beauty that the landscape holds, but allows you to think about the importance of conservation of these areas. The distortion of the photo catches your attention and enables you to explore these concepts.
To achieve this look, the image was manipulated digitally on an editorial software such as photoshop.
In my opinion, one of the strongest aspects of this photograph is the strong colours. They add a dramatic … and enhance the portrayed emotions. In addition, the angles of the shapes are strong and sharp. The composition is also unusual as it is not what you usually expect to see when looking at the environment or landscape in real life or in other photographs.
Although it holds many messages, I believe this image to be more of just a photograph rather than a piece of fine art.
This image relates to my work as I want to use my photographs to explore the influence that the human race has on the structure of the natural environment. This will be done by looking into a variety of issues such as climate change and its impacts as well as deforestation. In my opinion, this photo is doing a similar thing as it shows how a slight change in the appearance of nature can show how easy it is to manipulate.

Section 2 & 3
On the whole, I believe that my images portray the message that I want them to. I believe they are pleasing to look at and are also interesting and thought provoking. The image of the blossom tree explore more of the appearance of nature and how that influences our opinions. The change in saturation to sections is not prominant but is enough for you to realise that there is something different/ wrong with it. I belive this to be very powerful as it shows that we can often be blind to the smaller changes in the world that can eventually turn out to be catastrophic. I hope that this will cause people to start appreciating what is around them and try to take notice of the little things so that we can help the environment before its too late.
The layer mask image with the trees in the outline of skyscrapers has another message to portray. It crosses the boundaries between man made structure and natural structure. I hope that when you look at this photo, you see that the structure are very dirrefent and that they should not be approached in this way. As humans we are skilled at developing infrastructure but this is not the same as nature. You can see in the photo that the branches end as they reach the edge of the buildings outlines. This shows that our man-made structures hold nature back and that mixing the two together is not good for the environment.
In the next set of experimental photos, I want to explore a more emotional side to the message I am trying to portray. This will be done my creating a darker atmosphere within the images.

Section 1
In this set of experimental edits, I wish to try and keep a more positive perspective but still edit the images in a way that shows change is not always beneficial. To portray such an outlook through the photos, I will keep some if not all of the image in colour. This aids in showing the beauty of the environment as well as ensure the images do not become too gloomy. The simplistic editing I intend to carry out will show that they environment is incredibly delicate and even small changes can be detrimental to not only its beauty but its purpose too.

Section 2 & 3
When looking at the photographs I have taken, I am generically happy with the way they have come out.  Technically, the photos are successful however I do not believe that they are dynamic or individual, as many surround the same environment.
Reflecting on this photoshoot, the next set of photographs I take will aim to be more individual and more atmospheric within themselves. I think this will benefit to overall outcome of the images when they are finished. I believe this will enhance the meaning of the images as well as being more in context with my theme.
