WC and The Maad Circle 1990 Photographed them in Skid Row downtown LA. The album dropped in 91 and this was the 2nd Hip Hop cover I had shot. It’s an important part of hip hop history this group. Thats WC in white t. After this he was in Westside Connection. Thats Coolio in the back w paint splattered shorts, behind Coolio RIP is DJ Crazy Toones RIP and next to him is Big Gee RIP. Today is legendary jazz musician Stan Getz’s birthday. This shoot was in 1990 for his album cover. Really easy going guy but his team said he’s only got half an hour. I found out later it was because he was sick😓 We shot this at the old A&M records building on La Brea which was Charlie Chaplin studios back in the day. Working on a cool project that has me going through my archives again. Came across this chrome of the bbq legend - Christopher B. "Stubb" Stubblefield, Mr Stubbs. I remember I was really happy when he showed up in that denim ensemble. Authentic style and couldn’t have been nicer. This was in Austin TX in 1987. He had just moved his resteraunt from Lubbock TX. The Lubbock spot was famous for his bbq and his musician friends that would play there. Willie Nelson, Muddy Waters, Johnny Cash etc… This was for Stern Magazine and it was a story about Austin’s music and food scene. 1987 This was one of my first tests (a test builds a photographer and models portfolios) this test got me signed with an agency and a lot of work/My first album covers. This is a cross processed film technique that enhances/saturates the colors. Now we have filters. I learned to do this from a make up artist. He told me there was ways to enhance my film in the lab by cross processing it. So I spent a lot of time experimenting in the lab. Probably have brain damage from the chemicals. @coolio Damn this one hurts😓 we had just reconnected recently after losing touch. I was so happy to hear from him, he was probably the closest I ever got with an artist. Photographed him first in 1990 for WC & The Maad Circle album then we linked up again through @paul_djp_stewart who was his mangager. Then did his solo album covers. Got to see him move from a small house to a bigger house then a mansion over the years. He even came over to my pad and kicked it a few times. Shot his wedding. His story was really inspiring. He came from a very humble beginning, and to see him achieve a level of fame that so many strive for makes me emotional just writing this. He really was one of the coolest. My dad and friends outside his house in Boyle Heights early 1950’s (bottom left white t) He passed away 24 yrs ago today at 58. He’s been on my mind lately probably because I’m about to turn 58 and we had his funeral on my birthday. We weren’t very close. He wasn’t the easiest person to talk to but he was cool af. He let me know he was proud and always said I could use his junkyard for my photo shoots.
