the new chapter showed how Loid has subconsciously started to think of him and Yor as a unit. At the beginning of the story Twilight was completely independent and worked alone, but this chapter showed Twilight thinking of ways to care for Anya with Yor (WEâLL need to treat her with patience and care)
Franky: Aren't you worried about one day falling in love with your fake wife?
Twilight: âŠWhat are you talking about?
Franky: You know, the day you start seeing her as the most beautiful woman in the world⊠rosy cheeks, appetizing lips, beautiful eyes and amazing hair, as if everything around her is shiny, and she's the only person in your world
Twilight: âŠ. I don't understand your point, Yor has always looked like that every day.
Spy x Family Ep 9 - Manga to Anime Adaptation Notes
Episode 9: âShow Off How In Love You Areâ- Manga chapter 14
Analysis of the 'I'm grateful I married you, Loid!' scene. This episode stuck religiously to the text - every single thing here below are directorial choices and highlight how much love went into this adaptation.
On truth, lies and intimacy
The 'I'm grateful I married you' sequence is just... perfect.
At the start of the scene, we see how the lights turn red, not a detail that could have been in the manga - because, colors. Whatever has happened that day, neither husband nor wife can entirely move on from it just yet.
We then get that very intimate scene of Twilight putting his hand on Yor's collar echoing what had happened earlier. In the morning, in their own home, he was putting the bug on her. In the evening, in the open air, he was removing it from her. What he did - in the sanctity of their own home no less! - was a violation, but now the light is softer, the gentleness is real. And the subtle show of skin suggest vulnerability, and that whatever he says next reveals the real him who's under The Spy.
Animation also requires a sense of space. And so here, we see them clearly standing behind a crowd waiting for the lights to turn green. But note their position - they are still standing far away from the 'normal' people. They blend in, but not quite. The relationship they have - however much it fits an ideal - is not. They will always be different, but standing side by side, they can be different together.
Everything that can be said about the lines and scene that comes next has been said. It is heartbreakingly beautiful and heartbreaking.
The only thing I'd note here is, right after they've been honest to themselves and each other, after they've cleared the air, the traffic lights turn green (or blue in this case). Yor and Twilight can move on.
I lied. One more thing here, again impossible to show in the manga. Right before Yor tells Twilight she's grateful for him... the crowd we see earlier standing in front of them walks out of frame. Husband and wife are left alone, together. There's no audience to play to. They didn't need to pretend. This is real.
One of my favorite bits of this scene is the shadows as the couple walks back home - again, not possible to show in the manga medium. As much as they've revealed some true feelings... there's still their shadow selves who they can't be honest about just yet. But that's the thing - at this moment, Loid and Yor are the ones in the flesh, the Spy and the Assassin are the shadows. They just haven't realized it yet.
The manga also took a different approach when they show Twilight, filled with self-hatred and angst, throws away the bug he planted on his wife earlier. In the manga, we see his eyes and his expression clearly. Here we don't. Is it less effective this way? No. Because this calls back to how he's posed when talking to Franky about trust earlier, when we see his back and his shoulder droop. He is thinking about his friends' words. He may have decided something here - but what, we don't know. Except we do. He destroys the listening device, and walks home side by side with Yor in the warm glow of twilight. The manga portrays this quite differently...
Last, but not least. While Anya sees her parents briefly at the end in the manga, here, the anime lets the scene breathe. But not just that, from Anya's perspective, her parents are now standing side by side. Papa has taken off his suit and his Spy Clothes. Mama has taken off her coat. Both are in the kitchen, preparing food. Here is a married couple, as themselves, basking in domesticity, look at their daughter with smiles on their faces.
They may not have shown how much they are in love in this episode, but they have shown that deep down, they do love each other and Anya. And maybe that's all that matters for now.
i know âyor finally gets assigned to kill twilight/loid finally gets assigned to kill thorn princessâ is a really fun and popular future plot line people like to think about, but i think âyor gets assigned to kill desmond srâ could cause equal amounts of drama. because operation strix is not KILLING desmond, itâs getting close to him and infilitrating his inner circle. and you canât do that if heâs⊠dead
cue shenanigans of twilight miserably trying to keep this horrible man alive from this demoness who he had assumed was an urban legend and yor going âwho is this fucker who keeps getting in my wayâ
We all know about the running gag with the famous designer chairs on the cover of SxF manga volumes. And how Volume 10 broke that gag, and broke our hearts.
It did, however, follow one tradition. The inside cover art has always mirrored the outside's, and since Volume 4, they've all shown all shown us the cover characters' real selves, not the one they project to the world. Yuri is a suave, have-everything-together man on the outside... and a completely unhinged person with murderous intent on the inside. Nightfall is a cool, collected woman on the outside... and a completely unhinged person with murderous intent on the inside. Huh.
In both, it's very clear that the unhinged person on the inside is the one honest about what they want - for Yuri, it's for his brother-in-law to die and/or divorce his sister, preferably both, in any order. For Fiona, it's for Twilight to not die but definitely get a divorce, and then to marry her, also in any order.
In both of these volumes, those inside illustrations are drawn explicitly as thought bubbles.
But even when they're not, they still play on the same duality. Damian is a tough, entitled little brat on the outside; he's a sweet, bashful little boy who just wants friends on the inside. Becky's a spoilt little madam who loves pink on the outside; she's a spoilt little madam who will run a pink tank over you on the inside. (Let's be honest, Becky is the only one remotely living as her true self in this series.)
And so... on the inside cover art being about who people really are, reflecting what people really want. Well. I leave you with this:
Summary of translations of the Spy x Family EYES ONLY fanbook. Character comments by Tatsuya Endo
Damian
Damian's character is inspired by the manga "Hana Yori Dango" (also known as "Boys Over Flowers") by Yoko Kamio, specifically Tsukasa Domyouji.
He was originally a nasty guy who bragged about his status, but soon became a nice guy.
Endo originally wanted him to be a nastier character.
Lin says that Damian and his lackeys are true friends and that Damian's whole story to come should be done with care
I don't know if many know this, but it's known that Tatsuya Endo is a fan of the shoujo genre. And the fact that he based it on a Yoko Kamio's character excites me *doki doki*
Tsukasa and Damian already have a lot in common for example:
They are both haughty.
They both brag about their social status
They like to make fun of others
They have a personality uhmâŠ. complicated?
They are never with their family ( one of the main reasons why they are both like that )
And the most important of all⊠¥They are in love with unique girls, they received the fist of love!
But here's something that catches my attention, Tatsuya Endo said that the coming story for Damian should be done very carefully. That means that Damian's character is really going to influence the story a lot. And guess who else he will influence? That's Anya. I don't want to rush to say too much but the way things are going in the manga Damian and Anya's relationship is really moving forward. Damian is willing to protect Anya from danger. And that has been shown many times in the manga. Even though he often says that Anya is very annoying and more unpleasant things, he really appreciates her a lot and cares about her. And I don't know if you have seen the anime/manga of Hana Yori Dango, well, the real villain of the anime is Tsukasa's mother, once Makino and him start a relationship, doumyouji's mother does everything to separate them. I don't know if Endo has something similar in mind for Damian and Anya's story but it's going to be interesting.
Finally, I don't want to get ahead of myself but I'm 90% sure that Damian and Anya will be together in the end and I'll tell you why? Because they complement each other too much and for example Damian is very serious and mature for a boy of his age, Anya is very immature and is not serious at all (but well she is only 4 years old) But what I mean is that Damian has that seriousness that she lacks, and Anya has that joy and spontaneity that he lacks.
Anya has influenced Damian a lot and in a way changed him, the same thing happened with Tsukasa, he met Makino a girl totally different from the ones he knew and she changed him. Damian appreciates Anya a lot but she appreciates Damian? At first she thought he was an annoying brat and to some extent she still thinks the same, but Makino also had that thought of Doumyouji but as she got to know him those thoughts changed and in the end she ended up falling in love with Doumyouji. Probably something like this will happen with Damian and Anya, she will get to know Damian and little by little she will start to love him the same way he does. But for this I think there has to be a time skip. So we can only wait for the evolution of one of the most popular spy x fmily couples. âĄ
