Lucinda didn’t need the approval or physical amusement from another, and certainly never him. Half the reason she ever did anything to bother him was simply to see how long it would take for him to just — snap. Fingernails tapped lightly against the glass she held in her hand and his simple response gave her more than enough. This night might have gone all the more easier for him had he simply caved. She bothered him — it was more than obvious. A light hum filled her throat, a mindless tune pieced together as she waited out his silence, watching him carefully. “One day, Moody.” She tsked him softly and lent back in her chair, an embodiment of royalty that she’d always carried emanating off of her in waves enough to drown someone not prepared for this facade Lucinda so often played, but perhaps Alastor was. “You could make this so much easier for yourself, you are aware of that, aren’t you?” He goaded a part of her out that she wasn’t at all proud of – though she was a death eater at heart, her beliefs didn’t turn her into a monster until something akin to skittish prey showed face; Moody had made the mistake of doing that, intentional or not. “You should be more thankful, Hogwarts is receiving far more than it’s worth.”
Tumblr media
The silence had stretched and he was enjoying it, sipping his whiskey as she likely contemplated how to irk him. But he’d made a deal with himself before arriving, that she wasn’t going to get under his skin simply because it was what she wanted most. If she wanted it, he’d refuse it. When she began to talk he felt a slight bit of satisfaction and began to feign interest. She wanted him to ask but he simply smiled at her and took another short sip of his drink.  “I’m sure they will name a bathroom after you.” he quipped, the first hint of sarcasm he let slip.

Mary faltered. “I-…” she stopped. Yes, she could work around not knowing all the details, but knowing them made the healing process much safer, and more effective. Sometimes things didn’t work out like that, however, and Mary wasn’t willing to stand around and let the pain continue for him. Mary pulled out her wand, casting a cooling charm on the affected areas. That would be a start. Turning around, she pulled open her bag and rummaged around for something.
She presented Moody with a small vial. “Drink it,” she instructed. It was pain relief. Because he’d need it for the next part. “All of it,” she added quickly. Picking up her mortar and pestle, she placed them on the side before grabbing ingredients. She placed a healthy portion of Dittany in her mortar, before adding three drops of water. She started to use her pestle to grind down the Dittany, then she added moly, horse chestnut, aloe leaf, lavender oil and flobberworm to thicken up the salve to a paste. Once it was made up she held her wand above her mortar and started to recite incantations. She spoke quietly but quickly.
Blue eyes cast themselves over to their patient. She paused momentarily before she brought the paste over. Mary faced Moody, a serious look on her face. “Right.” she started. “I know y’re a strong, tough individual, but this next part is going to hurt. I’m nae exaggerating. It’s a pass-out kind of pain.” she told him. “Now, I have plenty more vials of pain relief in m’ bag and I need y’ to tell me when or if, y’ need it. Do y’ understand me?” she asked. “Don’t try to be brave, it’s just us in here. If y’ need it. Y’ tell me, okay?” she told him.
Mary exhaled before pulling on some thin gloves which she’d stuffed into her pockets earlier. She picked up her mortar and scooped up some of the thick salve she’d made to heal him. “Ready?” she asked.
Mary moved to the largest area affected and without hesitance, placed the paste onto it. She began spreading it around so it covered the whole surface and massaged it in.
Tumblr media
His skin felt cool for a moment but the burning lay just beneath the spell, the curse overpowering her considerate measure to ease the pain. He lay there trying to fight the waves of agony, wondering what his body could truly endure before he passed out.  He took the vial and downed it quickly, he didn’t even care what it was he just needed relief so desperately he’d do just about anything for it.
Whatever she was doing was taking too long, but then he felt just the tiniest bit of a silver lining, the potion making it just barely possible for him not to pass out. Alastor had experienced quite a lot of pain in his life but he’d been good enough to dodge the worst of the curses shot at him. Today he’d finally ran out of luck and a curse was so different from other sorts of pain and damage. He prayed Mary could actually help him but if anyone could it had to be her. She started talking and he did his best to focus on what she was saying. As if the pain could possibly be worse, he wanted to laugh.
The second she began to touch him he screamed in pain, the sound ripping through his insides, scarring him from the inside out. And then the world went black. For a few peaceful moments he was unconscious until his eyes fluttered open again. Her face swam above him but she was still treating him and he was still screaming, until the black took him again.

It shouldn’t have happened, he’d been careful, meticulous even but it seemed fortune had not been on his side. The mission was one he took alone, not willing to endanger anyone when he was certain he could handle it. And he had, he’d been successful but he had managed to get back to headquarters just barely and his grip on consciousness was slipping with every minute. Moody was fine with basic healing, even some odd things here and there but he was too wounded to help himself and too stubborn to go to mungo’s or any other order member. It was stupid to do what he had but he’d never admit that out loud.
When Mary arrived he barely got three words out before collapsing to the ground, breathless and in agony. His pain tolerance was also admirable but his injuries were extensive. He knew he could be healed but this would leave a mark he couldn’t erase. What if his people lost faith in him as a leader? He was supposed to be the best, the bravest, the one they could count on. Would his inability to return unscathed damage their trust?
“Yeah....” he replied, grunting in pain. “maybe-----after------you’ve” he took a moment to breathe and continued “healed-----me??” He could tell her but he wasn’t planning on it, not really and she didn’t need to know the details to heal him. IF she wanted some he’d give her a few but all she needed to know was the spell that had done this. “Flagrante-----curse----burned.” He managed, ready to pass out if she didn’t begin soon.
Tumblr media
She’d been called upon before, though never quite so secretively, nor in the true dead of night. Even still, it wasn’t new to her. Only a handful of people worked with healing curses and dark magic as of how dangerous it could be. So it was certainly plausible Mary or any of her colleagues (all in all there were perhaps seven of them) would be called upon in these concerning times.
Scurrying from her bed, she pulled on dark healers clothing, items which could get dirty and stained. If blood seeped into the fabric, but due to the dark color, it wouldn’t be noticeable. It was much less alarming to other patients. Quickly, somewhat messily, Mary pulled her hair up into a ponytail, out of the way of her face and eyes. She slid on practical shoes, sprayed on some of Dorcas’ body spray she’d lent her, and grabbed her wand. There was a handy, concealed pocket, which she slid her wand into. Crouching down, she pulled her healer’s bag from under her bed.
Mary paused, quickly placing her bag down, she grabbed a quill and quickly scribbled a message to the girls, explaining she’d been, somewhat suspiciously, called out to work, she’d be back as soon as possible and she wanted pancakes.
As she left her room, she stuck the note to Lily’s door. She apparated from the hallway.
Getting to Order Headquarters was always an interesting experience, mostly because it moved frequently for secrecy. Luckily, Mary had been there earlier in the day, so she knew where to go and what to do to enter. Once there she was pulled to the side and rushed away from prying eyes. She caught words as they ran to the appropriate room.
“duelling” “…cursed…” “ burnt-”
Mary pushed the door open and walked in, immediately her eyes locked on Alastor. She exhaled in disbelief.
“I need to know everything that happened. Do not miss a single detail,” she said immediately as she placed down her bag and moved to look over the injuries sustained.

Always be early. It was something that one of her more prevalent nannies had taught her and it had stuck with her ever since. Never a reflection on who or where she was meant to be, merely one of herself. As perfectly put together as any woman should have been. That and she’d never minded her own company, usually that time was spent watching people around her, and that was no different now. The money meant nothing to her, Hogwarts could do with it what they wanted, and in truth, she hadn’t at all considered actually winning, but it was certainly the icing on the cake. She knew what lengths people would go to keep one of their own out of her clutches, an amusing thought – she was one of the more harmless death eaters when not given reason.  That and given her previous encounters with Alastor, she had no doubt that she’d get a kick out of this night. Lucinda barely noticed him until he joined her, a slight smile pulling at painted lips as she looked towards him, glancing to the entrance. “Should I assume that you and yours have me surrounded?” She laughed, lithe fingers curling around her own glass, “Did they even let you out on your own? Your.. friends, seemed awfully worried about some silly little charity date with me.”
Tumblr media
He sipped his drink and barely acknowledged her until she spoke, trying for a joke that fell flat. He wasn’t going to make this fun for her, and to do that he had to not let anything bother him. It would be a feat if he managed it, Moody was the kind of man that was usually bothered. “Nope.” He responded simply. Indulging the joke or arguing would only lead to more conversation, and that wasn’t required on this damn thing. If he could duck out without kissing her he absolutely would. It was funny though that she thought herself dangerous or important enough for any aurors to have accompanied him. Even if she was such a badass he could handle her on his own, he did run the department after all, he was the best of the best.

The entire auction was ridiculous and when he found out who had put him up for it he was going to fire them. But Amelia and Frank were getting raises and promotions. The fact they’d go to such lengths to protect him was unsettling and yet noble. But it was also mildly insulting, he could take care of himself and a night with Lucinda, though aggravating, was far from dangerous. Still, a large sum had been bid for him, for some reason, and he was glad Hogwarts was getting that money. He was late for the evening, mostly because he didn’t give a fuck about being on time for her, or anyone else really. He was usually waiting on other people. When he walked in to the place they were meant to meet, he was dressed properly at least. When he spotted her he groaned inwardly but joined her and ordered a whiskey. However, he definitely wasn’t going to be the first one to say anything.

Alice: Hello?
Moody: Breakfast, anyone?
Frank: You broke into our flat?
Moody: You break into my home all the time.

He wouldn’t find anyone to discuss anything with if he bit that hard at an apology. She frowned, trying to ignore the sting in her chest at his retort, and squared her shoulders. “Mister Moody, life is hard every single day, in case you’ve forgotten, we’re in the middle of a war that the Ministry is denying. So, you’ll have to deal with people like myself who are searching for answers the Ministry refuses to provide.” She huffed, looking down at her bird’s treats, shaking her head. “Don’t worry about it. It’s a very good read. Enjoy your books.” She knew when she wasn’t wanted and it was painfully obvious to her he’d rather be anywhere but talking to her. At least, that’s how she interpreted it. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and started off in the opposite direction, chin held high even though she wanted to hide behind someone else.
Tumblr media
He huffed out another sigh, stopping dead in the middle of the street to look at her. It was clear he’d wounded her and he did feel badly but she brought it on herself with her actions. “Miss burbage, the auror department is not soiled in the ministries misdeeds, we focus on tracking and ending dark wizards, we have no stakes in the politics and corruption that define the rest of the ministry. Your interference, which often requires you being physically escorted out by security, doesn’t help anyone else suffering in these hard times, it only puts more stress on already overworked aurors. If you step foot in my department again I’ll have you detained.” He wasn’t trying to be harsh, just honest and she had rubbed him the wrong way. She might want answers but the way she went about getting them was almost as bad as Rita Skeeter manipulating the facts. Neither of them were helping anyone but themselves in his opinion. He watched as she slipped away, unwilling to chase her down despite the obvious hurt in her face and voice.

Her head moved around to look at the bar that they sat in with a midly amused expression, “The last time I checked there wasn’t an office with your name on it here. But in my defense there very well could be.” Her head nodding towards the bottle of elf wine that she’d already had half of. Regardless of the atmosphere out of sheer habit her posture straightened from the slacking she had been doing. “Privacy is sacred in these times, you never know who’s listening.” Emmeline had never been a fan of Witch Weekly and the way that Skeeter stirred the pot. “Though with your career and blood status I imagine it’s only harder to keep up the wall.”
Tumblr media
It seemed their conversation had gone from friendly and joking to slightly drunk and serious. He really hadn’t intended for it to go that way but what he had intended--that was unclear. “That isn’t---that isn’t why I’m a private person but fair point.” He lifted his glass to her and drained it, setting it back on the bar top. “I’m not sure what you’re implying there.” He tried not to read in to her slightly drunken rambling about politics.

Marlene glanced up at Alastor before there was a quick shake of her head, clear that she hadn’t seen who it was before she spoke. “Ah, nothing of great importance.” The McKinnon name had only gotten her so far, she’d have to prove that she was able to do her job to those around her. “Did you need something from me?” The Hit Witch quickly stood from the desk, straightening her shirt, ready to do what was asked of her.
Tumblr media
He was confused by her reaction, and the immediate desire to both drop the issue and run away. Alastor wasn’t terribly social but he wasn’t quite that rude, usually. “No, there wasn’t.” He didn’t have time to be insulted, realizing she clammed up like that when she realized it was him, and not whomever she was willing to vent to, so be it.

There was a slack jaw as she crossed her arms over her chest, clearly amused by his words even though she was trying to nail the part of insulted. “I’ve never been uptight. I do believe that it is the word I’d use to describe you.” A small smile graced her face as she spoke.
Tumblr media
the look of amusement on her face made his face feel hot and he looked down at the bar to let it pass. if she accused he’d just say it was the whiskey. “All business all the time.” he grinned “I am not uptight, simply private and professional.” but she was right, he was.

Charity smiled, though it didn’t reach her eyes fully, falling step beside him. “I’ve read the curse one, it’s extremely intriguing. Also mildly terrifying, but that’s just me. Scared of everything I s’pose.” That wasn’t entirely true. She wasn’t afraid of the Minister and she probably should have been. Nate either. At times she saw herself as chaotic good, but others she was true good. Neutrality had never been her strong suit, but as stances in the war went…she valued living and telling the truth above all else. So she’d stayed where she felt she was safest, with the Prophet and with her friends. “I just- I wanted to apologize if I’ve caused you any distress over the past few weeks. It’s never my intention. I know I can be pushy sometimes.” She eyed the novel, brow raising in curiosity again. “Have you ever read any muggle works? The Picture Of Dorian Gray is an exceptional read if you’ve got the time. I could lend you my copy, you’d want to ignore my annotations, though. There are quite a few.”
Tumblr media
He had never met anyone who talked as much as she did. It was as if she never stopped to breathe but each new sentence was at least relevant and even perhaps exciting. Alastor wanted to be left alone but she wasn’t terrible company, as long as she hadn’t approached him for some story or anything. “You, scared of everything?” he chuckled, she was rather fearless in his opinion, not always a good trait so it wasn’t really a compliment. The apology was unexpected and seemed genuine but he snorted anyhow. “Somehow Charity I doubt that. I don’t think you care if your intentions are pure or not. In the end impact always matters more than intention and you have a tendency to piss people off and make their jobs harder.” It was harsh, maybe too harsh and he felt bad after he’d said it, she was trying to be sincere. He tried to hide the novel under the other two but it was too late, he was a big fan of agatha christie but no one could know, he was a big mystery buff. “To be honest I think I’d find your annotations distracting.” Or maybe he ‘d find someone to discuss such books with.

Charity had stopped at the Owlery to get some treats for her baby, and was coming out just as Moody walked past her with books in hand. She eyed the titles curiously, the reader in her sang when it saw someone carrying novels. “Alastor!” She called, smile bright, “You look lost, need some help deciding?” She knew she’d driven half the Aurors mad, and she was fairly certain Moody had helped drag her out of the Ministry after she’d snuck in, but that was not her intention today. Today, she was taking a break from being a thorn in the Aurors’ sides.Everyone needed a break every now and again, even her.
Tumblr media
He looked around as he heard his name and groaned internally as he realized who had uttered it, sighing to himself as she caught up to him. “Charity, a delight.” He lied between his teeth. He had heard horror stories from the aurors, but he’d had to escort her out himself once or twice when she wandered into the ministry. If she liked them all so much she should become one. “Oh, these?” He lifted the tomes, two were practical, new spell and curse editions. The other one was a simple novel. “I’ll end up buying them all in the end, so not really.” He wasn’t trying to get rid of her but it was the truth of the matter at hand.

he’d been buried in paperwork and tasks for weeks and hadn’t emerged in that same amount of time. He’d been home, showered and was now wondering what to do with his new down time. Things had gotten quiet and he was unsettled but he found himself in diagon alley, perusing the shops and trying to decide to buy the books in his arm or not.

She watched him with a soft chuckle at how he blushed at the formal greeting she gave him. It was more out of habit really seeing as everyone or mostly everyone who entered the building were all seemingly older than herself. “That is well and true. May I offer you a drink while you wait then?” Her voice and tone were chipper today, something she hasn’t felt in a long while. It was a nice change. “Mrs. Tonks it is now but I’ve been better. What about you, Mr. Moody?” She put extra emphasis on the MR. This time with a cheeky giggle.
Tumblr media
Sometimes Alastor forgot how young people were, and how old he felt. The formal way she spoke felt out of place for the prophet, and for him, he wasn’t used to it and he couldn’t emulate it at all nor did he want to. He never understood why the purebloods insisted on pretending they were stuck in the muggle 1800′s. “Umm, water would be fine.” He felt more uncomfortable the longer she spoke and the giggle actually managed to feel like nails on a chalkboard. He wasn’t built for cheeky giggles and playful banter. “Mrs. Tonks, congratulations.”

She recognized that voice, though she took another moment to finish stacking the papers off to the side before reaching for a clipboard. The witch checked off his name and clicked a few buttons on the phone to page the editor and finally met the males eyes. “They’ll be with you in a moment Sir Moody. How else may I be of assistance to you today?” She asked with a pleasant smile on her features as she took a swig of water from her mug.
Sir Moody, it was much too formal for him and he half blushed in response. “Mr. would be just fine.” He smiled down at her, her desk somehow tidy in all the chaos around her. “I don’t think I need anything else, though we both know the editor will not be on time.” He checked an odd pocket watch tucked away in his suit, the hands moving in opposite directions, an oddity only he could read. “How have you been Ms. Black?” he wasn’t sure if she was still a Black by title or if she’d married yet, he wasn’t the sort to keep up with such news after all.
