Have you met LGR?
I haven't gotten a chance to actually have a conversation with him because everyone's been trying to talk to him, but yes I have been at VCF Midwests with him in attendance. I think the grand total of our interaction has been him saying "excuse me" and me moving a chair back to get out of his way. I did chat a bit with his brother though, he was cool.

Is that really CommodoreZ in the background of your VCF computer photo, or are they just joking around?
That's actually him, we were both at VCF East this year (along with several other people I know mainly online)

i miss your regular os posts
I kind of miss doing them too, but a fulltime job + migrating to mostly physical hardware vice VMs (VMs are a lot easier to take screenshots of) means I have less time to dedicate to it.

"Why Firefox?" Because it's the only alternative to Chrome that Google funds specifically so they can point and say "look, we're not the only browser out there". I don't think having most web browsers based on a project controlled by an Internet company that makes most of its revenue off of advertising is a good thing. Monopolies aren't good and even though I'm just one person, I'm not going to cave in and use it.
Why Firefox?
Firefox isn't trying to take away my ad blocking software, forcing me to wade through advertisements to traverse the web. I rarely have to stop and put up with ads in my day to day browsing experience. Google has made it very clear that they don't want you to have that power.
I'm very used to a specific UI in my browser, and I'm able to tweak Firefox to my needs. I don't use tabs when I'm at home, and being able to eliminate the tab bar can totally be done with Firefox (I won't elaborate on that here). However, there are many other things I can add to Firefox to improve my experience!
You know how sometimes you want to download an image on a webpage, but you can't right click on it, or it's hidden behind another element? I've got a Firefox tool for that called Right-click boroscope.
Don't want scripts to load in on a page, and cause havoc? Firefox has me covered again with NoScript.
I want to immediately reverse image search something I find regurgitated here on tumblr, in search of the original? There's a TinEye extension for Firefox to do that and save time.
For using tumblr more efficiently, there's XKit Rewritten. In Firefox.
Sick of Youtube's shitty search suggestions, and shorts being pushed? There's a Youtube Search Fixer add-on for Firefox for that.
I've also got the Wayback Machine integrated into Firefox.
The thing is, whatever reasons I enumerate to use Firefox, there are another hundred good reasons that other folks can add to this list no problem.
In some ways, it sucks that I should have to make so many modifications to my web browser to make it suitable for taking control within the modern webscape, but it also says alot that I have the freedom to make those modifications to my browser should I so choose. At work I'm forced to use chrome, and even though I'm only browsing ad-free internal corporate pages to get my job done, I still can't stand that experience.
We should be free to control our web browsing experiences. If a company finds a mantra like "don't be evil" too restrictive, maybe I don't want to help perpetuate their advertising machine (and don't think for a second that chrome isn't part of said machine). The web is supposed to be this free and open place, and it sure as hell isn't helped by browser monoculture. I really don't like the idea of supporting a monopolistic browsing experience that is the sea of chrome clones. Everything else seems to have turned into another chrome.
Fuck that noise.

So I will continue to use Firefox.

what esoteric, useful features do you find in older versions of MS office products that didn't make it into modern versions?
was there anything they did that should have continued on with newer versions but did not?
They should have continued "buy once own forever" instead of this subscription bullshit. That, and they shouldn't require an Internet connection for things like activation to getting help.
It's not so much of a case of "old versions have better features", it's "new versions change stuff for no reason". I don't like the dialog boxes appearing as sidebars in newer versions, if I right click an object to format it I expect the dialog box to pop up near me, not all the way to the side. Also I never quite got a hang of the ribbon in Publisher, and menus spell functions out better anyway (it took me FOREVER to find out where the format paragraph dialog box was, for example). Also trying to "suggest" what you want to do in ways that seem more invasive than Clippy (who was easily disabled)... no thanks.
Mostly I miss Excel shortcuts when using Excel 5.0 or similar vintage. Office 97 though... yeah I can deal with that a lot easier, especially for word processing. It has everything I need and no uncessary bullshit.

What do you actually run on old macs? You specifically. Is it just crappy old versions of office, or do you run fun programs too?
Unfortunately I have a weird sense of "fun" and like using office programs on older computers (usually word processors since after a certain point the new versions don't offer me any tempting features, and in fact make worse UI choices).
I do have an admittedly small collection of games though. And Adobe products. Plus you can't go wrong with Kidpix. Also sometimes I use them for testing websites to see how broken they all are. My machines running OSX 10.4 or newer also see a lot of command line use (specifically that version because it supports modern cyphers).
Also Intel macs make good Windows 7 machines

When you say "that's really gross", do you mean people making sexual comments on your posts without your permission is gross, or that people being attracted to objects is gross, or both?
I'll be honest, I don't understand being attracted to objects and it weirds me out, but it's relatively harmless so I don't take issue with it. It's the fact that Tumblr is basically a public forum, not a space specifically for people who are attracted to objects (I think the word is objectum?) and instead of sticking to sexual/romantic comments on posts by objectums for objectums, it branches out to the rest of the public who isn't in the community and isn't prepared/doesn't want to see those types of comments. (I do check to see what people say about my posts and... yeah).
