what do you think about Eric and Dylan being considered victims, being made crosses, etc. ?
it bring into question what we should consider as "victims" as a society. if we look at it literally, were they victims? yes, to some sort. they were victims to parents, peers, and a community that failed them.
i understand and empathize with the folks that put crosses up for them. whenever i think about these crosses, i think about a few particular messages that were left that have haunted me for years:
Tumblr media
"my generation is sorry if we failed you."
on dylan's:
Tumblr media
"prayers to your family - their child is lost."
"sorry we all failed you"
"NO ONE IS TO BLAME."
later, someone posted this sign on dylan's cross:
Tumblr media
"FATHER, forgive them, for they know not what they do. our love and prayers to their families. he that is without sin cast the first stone."
and behind it, it reads, "[through?] knowledge of God, we forgive you. you were pawns."
the messages left on these crosses were very powerful. they went up so soon after the shooting and while they were ultimately removed and destroyed, those messages were indicative of a community that understood that nuance of victimhood.
i think some people make eric and dylan victims for the wrong reasons. but i think forgiveness is, ultimately, the strongest tool in our boxes to healing. another unique piece to the whole aftermath of columbine is how much religion is referenced by everyone. in this scenario, i resonate so much with those messages, despite them being very religious. these people are begging their God to forgive them. they're exercising their knowledge of the crucifixion to ask, "and please, ensure that these murderers were forgiven too."
seeing a community do that, after being so freshly ruined and hurt by their actions, demonstrates to me that it's not inappropriate to remember the people they were.
long story short, i feel 50/50 on some of it. i think it's weird to line their crosses up with their victims but i think it's wrong to pretend they didn't exist and not want them to be forgiven.
after all, what did they say? HATE BREEDS HATE.

what do you think about sol pais
makes me sad. a solid example of what depression can do to the teenage mind. i think she found so much comfort with the idea of eric, a person who she probably viewed as similar to herself.
it’s hard for me to say she was delusional without feeling disrespectful, but if i’m calling it like it is, delusion had to have been involved. i feel terribly sorry that she felt her solution to the pain she felt was suicide. i think relying and focusing on the idea of eric/columbine helped ease her. i don’t think she was ever dangerous or a threat to the community, because i remember our town was on red alert when she came around. looking back on it, it felt unnecessary. i understand why, but when we see what the conclusion was, it was unnecessary.
again, it makes me very sad. i hope that we don’t see similar conclusions going forward.
she clearly suffered outside of her interest in columbine, but limerence is a hell of a thing, isn’t it?

“Let me tell you a story. The day after Columbine, I was interviewed for the Tom Brokaw news program. The reporter had been assigned a theory and was seeking soundbites to support it. “Wouldn’t you say,” she asked, ‘that killings like this are influenced by violent movies?” No, I said, I wouldn’t say that. “But what about ‘The Basketball Diaries’?” she asked. “Doesn’t that have a scene of a boy walking into a school with a machinegun?” The obscure 1995 Leonardo DiCaprio movie did indeed have a brief fantasy scene of that nature, I said, but the movie failed at the box office and it’s unlikely the Columbine killers saw it. The reporter looked disappointed, so I offered her my theory. “Events like this,” I said, “if they are influenced by anything, are influenced by news programs like your own. When an unbalanced kid walks into a school and starts shooting, it becomes a major media event. Cable news drops ordinary programming and goes around the clock with it. The story is assigned a logo and a theme song; these two kids were packaged as the Trench Coat Mafia. The message is clear to other disturbed kids: If I shoot up my school, I can be famous. The TV will talk about nothing else but me. Experts will try to figure out what I was thinking. Kids and teachers at school will see they shouldn’t have messed with me. I’ll go out in a blaze of glory.” In short, I said, events like Columbine are influenced far less by violent movies than by CNN, “The NBC Nightly News” and other news media, who glorify the killers in the guise of “explaining” them. The reporter thanked me and turned off the camera. Of course the interview was never used. They found plenty of talking heads to condemn violent movies, and everybody was happy.”

The 13 angels❤️👼
On April 20th 1999, 13 innocent people were senselessly killed in a shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. Today, 20 years later, we still feel the void of their absence. We remember their lives, the people they were, and who they could’ve become. Although their time here was cut short, they live on in our memories everyday. We will not forget them.

it’s very snowy today here in littleton. we had what we like to call a false spring for the last week. i just find it interesting how deeply the snow has fallen on this day, marking 25 years since the columbine shooting. if i remember correctly, 4/20/99 was a lovely spring day and the snow fell later that night as our community mourned and pondered why such a thing would happen here.
parallels. the universe will always mourn.

(I’m the anon that asked for a flower for Daniel M.)
You’re really cool and it’s so thoughtful that you do this, allow those who are unable to go themselves to honor these people.
I hope you have a spectacular weekend! ❤️
of course! i think the stories of the victims have impacted many lives. i was moved particularly by john tomlin when i was younger. many people don’t have the opportunity to pay respects, so i am happy to pay it forward! have a great weekend!

What if I come off anon and message you privately? I’m doing a research paper for my psych class and would like to know your opinion on these events, there’s not a lot of blogs like yours or at least that is still active on here. No hard feelings if it’s still a no. I know it’s a very heavy topic.
of course! i have been bad at replying to messages recently bc i’ve been super busy but definitely happy to help.

don't know if this has been asked before but do you happen to have like a document with all the stuff youve written and posted here, that you can share with us? I think it'd would be pretty helpful in case your account were to get deleted or something
god, that's a pretty good idea. i did get terminated last year but they let me back after a few months.
i have a word doc where i've been writing my case study for years. maybe i need to just host it on an external site that i run. i'll keep ya posted!

Hey I adore your blog! I have 2 questions-
1. If Eric and Dylan were much closer than they lead everyone on to believe, why did Dylan tell Brooks about Eric’s website? Unless that is just a weird personal thing for Dylan or if there is any psychological like loyalty to his childhood friend.
2. Dylan originally resented and detested Devon, but then went on to become friends, did he actually like Devon or was that somewhat of a façade?
Thank you for your time, and I hope you have a great weekend!

hey, moon! did you enjoy the solar eclipse?
i think about this all the time and wonder the same thing. why would dylan do that? it seems like such a betrayal to the friendship that he literally died for. the first thing to consider is the reality: did it actually even happen? i'm not saying it didn't, just putting it out there for speculative reasons. the brown family has proven time and time again to be extremely unreliable narrators. brooks also painted his relationship with dylan to be far deeper than it actually was, so it's really hard to say if this is even truth or fiction. for the sake of argument, however, let's say it's truth! i believe dylan would've been, what...15 or 16 when that happened? i think during that time, eric and dylan's more deadly/homogenous relationship was still blossoming. it's possible they started their plot already. but let's erase eric from the equation and consider where dylan was at. during that time, his journal entries were increasingly more suicidal and depressing. a part of me thinks he was teetering on the edge and was in the realm of, "fuck it, i have nothing left to lose so i'll tell brooks about eric's stupid website." dylan was also a lot more introverted when it came to his emotions whereas eric shat them onto the internet without much of a second thought.
you're definitely right about dylan/devon. i think that dylan did care for devon, once he came around. i think he came around after he accepted letting go of zack. zack, in my opinion, was a bad friend. you can see his body language is dismissive in the video of them in the auditorium and all of zack's interviews by jeffco are extremely negative. when dylan was alive, he quite literally inferred that dylan was too stupid to work on computers. friends don't talk about their friends like that. i think devon was probably a kind, level head that still connected dylan to zack. the way she has spoken about him after his death is the mark of someone who did care; i don't think it was one-sided in that way. it's a shame that sometimes we don't know how people feel about us until after it's too late.
have a good night :)

How do you think mass shooters hype themselves up to begin shooting victims? (I know a lot of the cases the suspect/s usually plan out their attack like Dylan and Eric did). I just always think of how Dylan and Eric were just so willing to get out of the car and just start shooting even when their original plain didn’t happen.
for the sake of public safety, i will not be answering this. this is nothing against you, dear anon, but i need my followers to know that i am a mandated reporter, a trained professional, and i cannot spread information that i feel could encourage others to essentially keep me in business.
thank you for your understanding.

What are your thoughts on peter langman? From what I know he is an actual professional, but he seems to have some questionable takes regarding this case.
i respect him as a psychologist and i think his work is important. however, i think dr. langman gets too stuck in his own ideas. he fails to accommodate new theories, studies, ideas, etc. because he's very confident in the theory he has proposed.
he doubles down because he's been highly regarded as a school shooter expert.
he's human. that's human error. he needs to be more receptive to collaboration but it doesn't take away from the important work he's done.

Why is it that you think they wanted to keep their friendship on the low? That they didn’t want people to know how close they were? What did they have to hide besides the obvious planning for a mass murder.
hey there! sorry for the delay.
i think that's probably the biggest aspect to their privacy. i also think that there was a weirder, deeper connection between the two of them that was just inherently more private.
i don't remember if it was brooks, zack, or nate who said it, but one of them mentioned that eric and dylan were more oddly private about their friendship than they were with other people.
together, they were deviant. dylan was warned many times by his parents that being around eric was a bad idea, so he lied and snuck around with eric under their noses. i remember when i was a teenager, all the times my parents thought i was being honest or trustworthy when i was actually sneaking out of the house to go drinking with my friends. in my 20s, i told my dad i used to sneak out all the time and he said, "ha! no you didn't. that was your sister." i said, "exactly."
i think that's the same kind of context with eric and dylan. dylan knew it was wrong, so he lied, hid, and did whatever do conceal the relationship. wayne and kathy seemed indifferent to eric hanging around dylan, but after the two of them got into big trouble more than once, i'm sure they felt similarly to sue and tom. i hope that answers your question or at least gives you something we can further speculate about.
