Attended my uncle’s memorial service last night and I want to express my immense gratitude to Ps Issac Chan from Grace Assembly of God (Bukit Batok) who responded to my cousin Jas’ call in this time of need and at such short notice. My uncle may not have attended any of the services or been a member of the church, yet arrangements were made so that my uncle can be honored in front of his relatives and friends. A number of them were taken by surprise that it is a Christian wake and I love how it was tied up so nicely to present his salvation during his last moments here on earth (which I have shared in my earlier post) to the faith, hope, and love we have in Jesus through my cousin’s faith story. I am thankful to Him that my uncle’s wife agreed to a Christian wake after hearing the voice recording from Jas. Initially, my aunt wanted to do away with the funeral due to monetary concerns and was afraid that it would snowball to an amount that cannot be afforded. With much persuasion and assurance from Jas and her son, she allowed the wake to be commenced over three days. Thanks be to God that He indeed is Jireh - our provider, the more than enough. The condolence money that poured in more than covered the expenses that were incurred. It is with a heavy heart to see my maternal uncle reaching his lifespan of 90 years. As a young boy, I remembered him as a big man of stature and yet generous to his nieces and nephews - the numerous trips he brought us to East Coast Park on his pickup, the KFC treats when it first started its chain of restaurants, and having chickens using knives and forks back then. I was really thankful for how Jesus orchestrated his salvation during his last three days here through my cousin, Jas, and the prayer group - you know who you are. One worthy moment was my cousin got him to pray for himself and ask Jesus to heal the pain he felt in his leg that night. Shortly after, she went to the washroom and upon coming back, he said in Mandarin, "Jesus, I trust in you," repeatedly. That really surprised my cousin and she managed to record that down and shared it with us. In fact, I teased her if she got him to memorise that line and she vehemently denied it. 🤣 On Saturday morning, his condition deteriorated as he experienced difficulties in breathing and a mild stroke. He passed away peacefully this morning. It made me reflect on what I would be remembered for during my last days here on earth as my loved ones stood around my deathbed. My work, idiosyncrasies, stupid pride, irritating procrastination, humility, urgency, and purpose guided my life. I do not want to sound morbid here, but death is just a passage one must go through, and the legacy I would leave behind. Looking back, I could have been dead from a motorcycle accident in June 2000, just thankful that I am still breathing here through His protection for another 21 years. Really never know what curveballs life would throw at you. It’s been two long years since we welcomed back our alumni in 2019. They were only Sec 1 then. Now they were already Sec 4. It’s heartwarming to see the different cohorts still making the effort to visit the teachers and reserving us, besides snatching the time to catch up with one another. 🥹 Loved the time spent with them and finding out how they have been.
