So, my DB/Z obsession from 20 years ago reawakening after years of being dormant has some side effects.

As a teen I didn't have the knowledge and experience to recognize trauma, much less explore it (fanfic or otherwise), nor did I have access to fandom spaces in a way that I could connect with other fans to see their takes on characters.

So, in the past, I never actually realized what Vegeta went through and that there's a whole fuckton of trauma between Planet V's destruction, Freezer and his death on Namek.

Yeah, up until ... three weeks ago I never looked at Vegeta as a character with trauma.

And now I do. Now I look at "watched his entire species and planet die as a kid", "was forced to do Freezer's bidding as little more than a slave for 25 years", "learned it was FREEZER who killed his people and planet", "lost all hope at defeating Freezer when he realizes just how outmatched he was" and I fucking bluescreen in horror.

This doesn't make early Vegeta less evil or less of a prick in any way, not at all. What it does is ADD SO MUCH MORE to his character than I was ever aware, and I already loved him more than anything.

I'm okay, this is fine, everything's alright.

And I always wondered why he just stayed on Earth and moved into Capsule Corp. and ... what fucking else should he have done?! There was literally no place in the universe he could go, not a single person waiting for him, nothing, absolutely nothing left of his old life. He was utterly taken apart as a person by Freezer just a few hours ago, then he died, and then he's alive again but for WHAT?

And Bulma saw that. Not that he cared about her at the time, but she looked at him and realized "oh what's that guy going to do? He doesn't look like he has an agenda right now" and decided fuck it, I'll take him in, he needs a shower and a large pizza ASAP.

And I think even if you're Prince Fucking Vegeta, who cares about no one and nothing (who would want him to, even?), being offered a shower and a bed and a large pizza after losing everything will have an effect.

Yeah I'm good, nothing to see here, move on lol

Dragon Age AU where the characters are wearing (stylized) traditional Vietnamese clothes! This one is for Fenris 💙

I've decided to upgrade the art style for this design too. Given that I plan to revamp all the full body portraits when i'm done with the whole DA2 cast anyway, I figure I'd just draw in the style that I enjoy the most in the meantime 😔

Part of my DA Vietnamese clothes AU

I am aware that I don't do this for my other character designs of this series, but the Đông Sơn culture doesn't have a lot of surviving records and artifacts on its clothings & armors. I mixed and matched and made up a lot of stuffs as a results, so I wanted to write this just to clarify where the references come in, and where I took my artistic liberty.

For Fenris I wanted to explore how the Tevinter aesthetics might look like in việt phục, and I thought Tevinter would be the type of country that is very big on the nostalgia thing (from conversation with Dorian). So I decided to go with a mix of patterns, accessories & armor from the Iron Age Đông Sơn/Lạc Việt culture with the standard clothing that the Kinh people would be wearing later on.

As for how that would reflect on his social upbringing, (game) class & personality, I have a few bullet points:

He still keeps the armor he wore from when he was still a slave.

He is practical, reserved, on the run and probably broke, so I won't go with large sleeves or put patterns on the robes, etc.

Similarly, he wouldn't wear accessories that indicate nobility or high status. On the other hand, he lives in Danarius' abandoned mansion and has full access to the latter's wine cellar, so I imagine he can still wear some nice trinkets, but they would look a bit mismatched as a result.

Ok! With that said, let's look at the visual references.

For his first & second layer comprising of giao lĩnh and viên lĩnh, I recommend a quick look at this video by Vietnam Centre:

For the armor and accessories, all the photos shown here are from luocsutocviet.com, and they listed the sources for most of their images. If you see me showing images down here without sources, it'd be from there.

Arm and leg armors. Relatively close to the sources:

I really imagine that whenever he uses his ability, you'll hear little chimes of death and a dash of blue.

2. Lamellar. This part is tricky, because evidences that survive until this day are only these:

And as you can see, there are only two holes on each piece, which suggest that the methods of connecting the pieces can be very different from Chinese, Japanese or Korean lamellars, etc.

Lược Sử Tộc Việt cited references from the Điền culture (that shares similarities with Đông Sơn) on the use of lamellar back then. But other than that, we don't have much to go on. So, what you see is basically made up & stylized by yours truly. I did try to stay as close to the standard form of lamellar as possible, but the exact structure of the Đông Sơn lamellar is unknown.

A note on this: I decided to give the middle finger to the skin-revealing thing that Fenris was shown wearing in Heroes of Dragon Age. Considering his former master was Danarius, such type of outfits is not impossible, but it's not something I like to run with. So, I want him to be well-armed with a full lamellar suit, albeit a short one so that it's not too heavy.

3. "Hộ tâm phiến" (heart-shielding armor). We call them such because they share similarities with the 护心镜 (hùxīnjìng). It is arguable that these pieces were reserved for nobility or leaders considering how beautifully engraved they are, but I liked it so much that I still gave it to Fenris, using a simpler (and completely made-up) wolf-like pattern design. The real deals look like this:

4. Sword.

I know that in canon the Blade of Mercy looks HUGE, but I still want to respect the elegence of the Đông Sơn blades (and personally a long thin sword is much more to my taste than a long huge sword).

5. Textures and patterns:

Other than the wolf design on the chest piece that I completely made up, the rest is devised from these.
