There’s a twinge of a frown on her lips —she couldn’t have checked the hallway from the other side of the door. Well, she couldn’t. Perhaps that’s something some of the other species could. Still, Shay is glad the door is finally closed, no thanks to her lack of strength. “Really sorry…” She reiterates, biting her bottom lip between her teeth. “You look great…” It’s true, though Shay is saying it only to reassure the other girl.
Guilt creeps into Estela at the stranger’s expression, and she tries to offer a reassuring smile. She isn’t quite sure how convincing it is, but she hopes she buys it. “Hey, really, it’s not a big deal. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional.” She closes the distance between them just slightly, though space remains, as she doesn’t want to get too close. “I... thank you. You do, too.” Compliments aren’t something she knows how to deal with well, or at all, without being more than a little awkward. “Seriously, though, it was just my hair. You were only practising."

“Siri, Cortana, that chick that’s some named GPS for your cars. There are far too many ’intelligences out there for you to get to know. And why are all of them female, that’s a little odd.” Then again, his imagination always went to some guys in lab coats going over and programming these things. Making it a talking robotic woman was probably the closest to the real thing they’d get. But thinking of lab coats, that always brought up less than grand memories. “Oh, you can destroy something you’re supposed to be talking into by talking to it?”
Tumblr media
Estela actually stopped to think about that for a moment, humming as she did. “Comfort, maybe? Who knows. I find they’re actually quite helpful, though. It’s worth giving it a try, especially if it will prevent you from destroying it.” It had still been a new concept when Estella was human, within the last couple of years before her turning, so it was something she was still learning about herself. Interesting, though, that technology had advanced so quickly into something so helpful. “I actually meant just from pressing the option on the screen, but I wouldn’t put it past anyone around here.” Who knew what else the scientists had come up with, that Estela had never learned about? Or even during her time as an experiment herself? She'd hardly have been in the right state of mind to notice anything new. Zach would know about that, one of the few people who would, having met each other in the labs. "Other than the phone issue, how have you been adjusting?"

atticusness:
Atticus wasn’t quite sure how he felt about Estela. Of course she seemed kind enough, but he wasn’t sure where she stood on her morals especially if they were similar with Castor. He wouldn’t condemn her because it was her life, but he tries to stay away from interacting with those kinds of people.  They tend to fall in one group. “Ah, I see,” he replied with a simple nod. “I know what you mean.” He did as he was a bit of a homebody. He preferred being home, but there definitely were times when he wanted to get out. It was nice to smell something other than his cabin and the people that were in it. Though unlike her, a walk wasn’t the way he distracted himself. It was usually reading. It got him to focus on something else. “No, I was just heading back to my house..cabin thing. I read.. a lot so, um..” He held up his book. “Was going to go read. I assume you don’t read since… no one does here.”
Tumblr media
Already, Estela was feeling more relaxed. Vampires were people she automatically trusted, knowing they had been through similar to what she had. The alphas, she trusted even more. It was no secret that they’d been made to turn others whether they’d wanted to or not, and she could relate to that, her actions in the lab not being her own. The responsibility for it still weighed heavily on her shoulders, though. Castor’s morals may have been different to her own, but they were in a similar boat. “No, I do. I read a lot. When I was human, I had a pretty decent collection. I’ve been trying to start that up again since getting here.” Now she really did smile, and not just a small one, either: a genuine, honest smile. “Could I, perhaps, come and take a look at your own?”
It faded, though, after a short moment, asking a question that Estela hoped would have a positive answer, one that would give her a little more hope for the world she was in. “How have you been since we were freed?" She paused for a moment, looking down at the ground. “And please don’t answer with a general answer... I- I really would like to know. Maybe we could help each other, you know?”

He glanced over in her direction as she spoke, a small smile appearing on his lips at her words. “ You know, you sound just like somebody I know. “ The introvert type wasn’t exactly something foreign to him, a decent amount of the people he was closest to fitting the bill exactly. Though, the comment about the sun brought a specific vampire to mind. It was something familiar, and it almost made him more comfortable in her company. At her question, he narrowed his eyes in thought. “ Depends. I’d say about eighty percent of the fights I get into are for play, but… overall, not so common. “
Tumblr media
That wasn’t something that Estela had been expecting to hear, a confused look appearing and a tilt of her head. It was meant as a good thing, right? Though she had no idea who Max could have been referring to, so it could have been meant either way. “Who do I sound like?” Chances were, she wouldn’t even know the person he was referring to. The next part made her sigh a little, though it was only to be expected, she supposed. “And the twenty percent that aren’t for play, who are they with? You should probably avoid all kinds of fighting while you heal. Maybe keep away from people you don’t feel safe with. It shouldn’t be too long, anyway, right?”

lupumitis:
Max found the distance that she kept odd, though that was probably because he was one to see no boundaries when it came to personal space. Still, Estela seemed very methodical in the way that she stayed back. He thought it best not to ask, but simply respect her wishes. “ You do that a lot? Just… go for a walk? “ If she did, it was truly amazing that Max hadn’t seen her around before. He, for one, spent every moment that he could spare outside of his apartment. It got a bit cramped in there sometimes. And lonely. If there was one feeling Max couldn’t possibly deal with, it was loneliness.
Tumblr media
The question made Estela’s lips twitch into a small smile, another shake of her head. She knew it was hardly normal, probably even here, for someone to be so distant and isolated, but being ‘normal’ wasn’t exactly something she would prioritise over her safety. “Not exactly. I prefer the comfort of my apartment,” she admitted with a gentle shrug, keeping her eyes forward, her gaze rarely flickering over to Max. "I’m not the biggest fan of the sun, either. This was- I needed some fresh air.” The white lie left her lips easily, as though it wasn’t nearly as big a deal as it felt to her. “Do you get into play fights a lot?”

atticusness:
Atticus had borrowed a book from the bookshop and was heading back to his recluse cabin. It was rare for the vampire to come across another one as there was a very small handful of them. All of them either coming from him and Castor. A strange thought to think of either of them coming from each other, but he supposed that’s how people would explain it.  “Oh, Estela,” the alpha commented, raising an eyebrow. He and Estela knew each other but he didn’t exactly consider her a friend friend. They were more like companions, and a friend of his brother’s. If there was anyone who would have a vampire pack, it would be Castor. “Yeah..I’m okay..are you?” He asked, head tilting sideways in confusion. He didn’t think there was anything off about him, but then again, he could be wrong. “Are you okay? You look a little loss..”
Tumblr media
The moment Estela realized it was Atticus, she visibly relaxed. It was a relief to bump into one of her own, even if not someone she was close to. She was closer to his brother, sure, but he was familiar, at least. “I... yes. Yeah.” It took her maybe just a little too long to answer, giving a brief wave of her hand and shake of her head. “I’m fine. Not lost. Thought I’d get out of my apartment for a bit, try to take my mind off... everything,” she explained, her voice a little weaker, slightly more open around the other vampire. She was certain that Atticus would know what she was referring to, if not able to figure it out or make an educated guess, but she wasn’t ready to say it aloud, yet. “Are you busy? Heading anywhere important?”

“Agree,” Rae chirped, continuing to smile warmly at the other. She had been absentmindedly fiddling with the little stones in her head, and when the attention was turned to them she stopped, flattening her palms. “Oh! No, not at all. These are just some stones I found in and by the water today, I like to collect them.. They remind me of the water, the rivers, the ocean, it all.. They are also kind of relaxing for me, to have. Reminds me that water can cure all basically..
Tumblr media
It was surprising to Estela how contagious the girl’s smile was, her half-hearted, forced smile, gradually turning into a real one. Small, but not faked. Enough to take her mind off of things for a short while, at least. It was sweet that the girl was passionate about something so simple from its association with the ocean. It seemed that she was a mermaid, if not enhanced with something related to water from the way she talked about it. The vampire had learned about many different species while living with her foster parents, but it didn’t take an enormous amount of knowledge to the girl's her passion to the species. “They’re pretty, and if you feel a connection to them, I can see why you’d want to keep them.” It reminded her a little of why she enjoyed reading so much, of why she had begun to restart her book collection since she’d arrived: they were almost a comfort blanket. “You’re very cheerful, aren’t you? I don’t mean that in a patronizing way. It’s... refreshing.”

lupumitis:
She was right, of course. If he let it heal incorrectly, it would definitely be a bitch to fix. He simply nodded in agreement to her comment, taking a deep breath as if mentally preparing himself for the clinic, which held far too much resemblance to the labs. It was understandable why most of the species avoided the building at all costs. He gave a simple flick of his head as some sort of invitation to continue, leading the path to the clinic. “ Max, “ he responded, putting on a small smile. “ Thanks, by the way. For, uh… not being an asshole. “
Tumblr media
The vampire was silently relieved when the guy - Max - began to lead the way, remaining by his side, but with a noticeable distance between them, not wanting to get too close. “Nice to meet you, Max,” she replied, unsure of quite how accurate that was yet. Maybe, if she could trust him, it’d be nice to befriend more species. She had to remind herself that they all came from similar environments, similar situations so they would understand- but what if they found out? Ridiculed her for what she’d done? Saw her as the monster she partially believed she was? Or worse, what if they tricked her, like the scientists who’d forced her turning? Shaking her head, as though the action could force the intrusive thoughts away, she continued. “No problem. I was only out for a walk, anyway, so it’s not holding me up from anything. Just gotta make sure you’re alright.” It was the right thing to do, and Estela felt she owed him for bumping into him like that while he was in pain.

“ Uh, play fight, “ he answered simply. “ I didn’t think it was this bad, so I just… told them I’d take care of it myself. Regretting that now. “ Of course, there were other reasons he’d let his sparring partner off the hook. Maybe it was a mix of pride and not wanting them to feel guilty. Slowly, he lifted his sleeve, peeking under at the wound. At the first sign of purple skin, he made a face, quickly smoothing the sleeve back down. It would probably be better not to look at it. “ I’ll be fine. I heal fast. “ He wasn’t quite sure if he was trying to convince his new companion or himself.
Tumblr media
“Right...” Estela answered, trailing off, at least feeling a little comforted by that. It did raise a lot of questions, but they weren’t ones she was willing to ask just yet. The purpling bruise didn’t seem to faze her; though she didn’t exactly like that he was in pain, it was nothing compared to a lot of what she had seen- probably compared to what a lot of species had seen. For an awkward moment, she said nothing, waiting to begin to walk but not wanting to turn her back to the man. “I’m sure you will be fine,” she agreed, especially if he did heal quickly, “but it’s best to be safe. If it’s broken, they’d need to ensure that it heals correctly, fast healing or no.” Her eyes briefly flickered to him, then lowered to the ground. Maybe she was about to make a huge mistake, maybe she was judging the guy’s character wrong, but she couldn’t know for sure until it was done. “Estela. I’m Estela. You are?”

“ I’ll be fine, “ he muttered in response, though it wasn’t all too convincing. He exhaled heavily, muscles relaxing as the initial sting of the collision faded. Max truly hadn’t thought it was that bad, but that showed how much he knew about medical care. Usually, he wouldn’t even seek any care at all, simply watch as his accelerated healing worked its magic. At her offer, he finally glanced up, observing her as if trying to work out her intentions. She seemed sincere, and who was he to reject help? “ Yeah, I was headed that way anyway. I mean… if you’re not busy. “
Tumblr media
This could prove to be a mistake, either for her own safety or for the stranger’s, especially since Estela had barely been around other people. She had no idea who she could trust, who would be of harm to her, and with all she had been through, it appeared that anyone could be. Then, of course, there was the fact that she had little experience with her need for blood outside of what the scientists had made her become. She would just need to keep on her toes, actually pay attention to what was happening now she was with another person, ready to act in any way necessary. “Not busy,” she answered with a shrug, her need to get away from her own thoughts and to help the person she'd hurt pushing her into doing this. “What happened, anyway? How did you get hurt?” she questioned, only then realizing how plausible it was that this had been done to him by one of the humans here, or hell, even one of the other creatures.
