Hey, you’re totally valid as a system if the trauma that caused your system isn’t what others might traditionally think of as trauma. What might be totally fine for one child could absolutely devastate another.

Some possible complex traumas that might not seem like complex traumas to other people include:

A drawn out divorce or custody battle in the family.

Parents whose relationship was visibly strained or volatile.

Watching another person be abused, belittled, or controlled.

Watching another person struggle with addiction.

Hearing frequent arguments in your household.

Moving house/area often.

Growing up in poverty.

Being bullied or teased in school.

Being belittled often by someone, even if it was “a joke”.

You or a family member/friend experiencing a long-term serious illness.

You or a family member/friend undergoing multiple medical procedures over a period of time.

Living in a generally chaotic household, even if there was no actual abuse.

Living with someone unpredictable and chaotic, even if they weren’t actively harmful.

Feeling controlled, monitored, or powerless.

Needing to care for yourself or siblings at a young age.

Being in a family environment where you didn’t feel comfortable voicing needs or concerns.

Trauma is trauma, and you were a child. You are not obligated to justify why your trauma was bad enough to create a system.
