i love graffiti. "comics and jazz are the only american art forms" you forgot graffiti. did you remember graffiti? That art form birthed in Philly and NYC in the early 70s by poor Black kids. that art form that spread all over the world and influenced so many. that's used without irony in commercials when they're trying to appeal to a "young urban" customer.

did you forget graffiti? that racism broken windows theory victim? that reach the establishment takes claiming that it's exclusively violent gang members throwing up those full-color pieces and wildstyle tags in the middle of the night outsmarting fifty security cameras because the billboard was ugly anyway. as if, even if it was, it wouldn't be impressive as all hell. risking brutality and fall damage so your art can occupy the space a gentrified condo named something like "Coluumna" took away from you. proving that despite only assholes affording to live here anymore there's still a soul beneath it. an animal with dripping stripes and teeth that go clack-clack tsssss

I promise I'll come back to you some day. to your random bickering and weird little snack preferences and traumatized personalities masked with humor and fame and whatever the hell else is going on. thanks for keeping me warm on nights where drowning everything out wasn't enough, when all I wanted to do was fade away. You don't know how much you saved my life, kept my soul from slipping into darkness and and my eyes above the water.

You're frozen in the story now, hanging inside quotation marks inside a scene somewhere in a stranger's house, somewhere you feel safe, finally, about to get back on the highway. And you're happy. but i'm busy now and the cards are playing out in real life. I went to a waffle house late last night and I hope you can too. One day I will unfreeze you. let the tires roll down the driveway away from the stranger's house, write the radio turning on and the playlists you have repeat on loop forever.

I promise I'll come back to you someday, find you in my old sadness, between being lonely and my favorite childhood songs. in old motels and cups of coffee and the yellow lines on the road. I would give anything to go back to those late nights scribbling out scenes and trying to get the feelings right, the 2am type of tired the next day but your quirks and the sharp parts of you kept me awake.

One day I'll come back. I promise.
