the truth was no, the man was not fine. his fire had not gone out completely, but it’s not the same it was before, a small bundle of flickering embers instead of a passionate flame. maybe one day he’d be back to his normal self, but not now. he glances over at dazai as they drive. the gesture is soothing to him. he pulls into the apartment complex and climbs out, opening dazai’s door. 

‘ i can’t believe you’re offering to do the dishes. maybe you’re a reformed man. ‘ a weak attempt at a joke, but it’s a joke nonetheless. 

he offers his arm. ‘ it’s good to see you again. let’s go inside, eh ? ‘ 

      “   now  ,  now you don’t really believe that !  ”    dazai jests as they throw their gangly limbs outside of the car.  from what dazai’s managed to hear  :   kunikida preformed exactly how they’d expect.  not that the others didn’t  ...  but dazai’s focus remained settled on kunikida  ,  the man that’d risk his life given the rest of them were saved.  both of dazai’s arms coil around kunikida elbow.  the sentiment kunikida gives dazai rings in his ears  ,  makes an empty stomach flip.   “   you’re being so docile  ...  i really feel like i should ask for proof you’re the real kunikida-kun.    ”   their best attempt at a joke as fingers drum against the fabric of his shirt.  dazai attempts to lighten the atmosphere  ,  putting on their best airs  ,   yet the lean into kunikida’s body goes against his attempts.  dazai inhales through their nose as eyes fall to a close.   “   you really been through it  ,  huh ?   ”
