On this post we’ll learn how to take care of a new tattoo to make sure it stays perfect for a long time. We’ll talk about healing, the use of plastic wrap, products we can use or not, tattoo creams, beach, artificial tanning…We’ve searched for some info about the theme and talked to the brazilian tattooist Beicinho, who has more than 25 years on the tattoo field!
Plastic wrap
All studios use plastic wrap, no matter if they are big or small, all over the country. Beicinho explained to us that this is something that came from Europe, a cold weather continent, where habits are totally different from ours (Brazil - a hot weather country), where temperature interferes on people’s skin and even the everyday life.
He says: “They’ve created a second skin, made from vitamins, placentas to cover wounds. And when that came to Brazil, it was adapted to the plastic wrap, but we live in a very hot place, you can’t play with that. We wrap it to “fool” our body to make it think it has created a type of skin and the body won’t speed up with the healing process. So, the body thinks it’s protected and stops creating a defense mechanism.“
Beicinho don’t consider the use of plastic wrap valid, and reinforces the hygiene matter:
"If someone has their hands dirty from picking money and put their hands on the plastic or if it’s not well stored, it can take bacterias to the tattoo and that’s closed, stuffy. In other words, in two hours (the amount of time that’s usually recommended to stay with the plastic) the bacterias start to reproduce and could lead to a serious infection. The hair was shaved, that hair could get infected. I don’t recommend the use of plastic wrap. For some it works, but for others it could bring consequences.”
Creams, sunscreen and other products
Another common doubt is the use of creams while healing. Should you use it or not? Does it make the tattoo fade?
Sunscreen is only indicated after the complete healing of a tattoo, which takes an average of 30 to 40 days. Before that, you shouldn’t use it, go to the beach or do any type of artifical tanning.
“The salt takes off the brightness of the ink, the water brings risk because of possbile pollution or chemical products, which can lead to a contamination. It works the same way with pools, because of the use of chlorine.” Beicinho tells us.
He explained that if you follow these tips the tattoo won’t loose color or brightness. He’s emphatic regarding the use of creams: “You shouldn’t use it. The cream was made to take care of the skin and not the pigment. It will take care of your skin, your body thinks it needs to take care of a "wound,” but not something that was tattooed, pigmented. Therefore, when it heals it can loose its brightness and look faded.“
The tattoo is a kind of aggression - at least it’s how our body understands it. The body creates a natural process of defense and we can minimize these processes by following the tips of your tattoo artist and also taking care of your body.
Eating habits
What types of food should we avoid? Plenty! Specially unhealthy ones, the ones hard to digest and with high content of fat and sugar.
It’s important to have a balanced diet, rich in vitamins and to drink a lot of water, because besides hydrating our body and skin, the water helps to fix the vitamins and nutrients. If your body works perfectly and it’s being taken care, the healing time can be faster and your tattoo will be in a well-treated and healthy skin. That’s the secret!
Other tips
Don’t forget to keep your tattoo clean, washing it with neutral soap, gently and carefully.
On the first days scabs will start to appear on your tattoo, which can make it look faded, but don’t worry: it will go back to normal if you take good care of it. The scabs can’t be picked or you’ll take the risk of messing up it!
After about a week, the scabs will fall naturally and you’ll end up with a beautiful new tattoo.
