He’d stopped all the luxurious cooking &. baking, sometime in their teenage youth.

When it had stopped, he couldn’t rightly say - perhaps a few months before the Islands fell, when the Door and other Worlds truly began to seep into his brain, like certain toys filling a kid’s playbox and tossing everything else out in the process.

Everything important - everything meaningful.Things he’d had to carefully and cautiously fill back into that box once it was made empty, if those things allowed him to.

But with the end of the War came a little bit of relaxation - and time to do what he liked, when there wasn’t the pressure of school, thoughts of college, life, the future, breathing down their necks.

He considered himself glad, as he knew he would, that he’d at least tried to keep himself educated even while in DiZ’s ‘care’ - it made it easier to cope, now, when the going was getting tough.

He was used to pressure, time restraints, panic – so school was almost simple.Even so, with all she knew, she was a great help - good and bright and, while popular, warm and caring to her boys, always.

It was almost like Before, with how she sauntered into his house like she owned the place - with his parents away, leaving him on his own in this large, expansive abode of white for weeks on end, she practically owned it as much as he did - and, in all the educational adaptational madness, it wasn’t unwanted.

He’d had to reprimand her for trying to eat the batter or icing a few times, admittedly, light taps to her wrist that, while not painful, got across his message instead of the betraying twinkle of amusement in his eyes —- and her laugh, her giggles, filling up the empty space with warm and kindness and love, made it all worth it.

There’s tea and chatter, laughter and some jokes, recollections of times gone, while his confectionaries bake - then the ring of the alarm, and out come cookies, delicately then coated in pretty pink icing once they’re cool, just the way he always did.

Princess cookies - crowns and stars and a few little paopu-inspired shapes. Just the way she’d always liked - and how he remembered making them for her, since he was little.

“Perfect for a princess.”

Her lips were already sweet with icing by the time he doted on her with more physical affections - but he’d let it slide.

Maybe he liked to believe the sweet taste was just her, happiness and warmth and love in abundance, cookies or no - but she didn’t have to know that.Or maybe she already did. And that was fine, too.

     ❝ what are you talking about ? ❞ he turns towards her. his heard POUNDS in his chest every time he looks at her, but this time… he felt such SADNESS towards her. seeing her like this, it wasn’t what he wanted. 

     a hand extends out to take a hold of her’s – he wanted her to know that he wasn’t going to go anywhere. not yet – not AGAIN. ❝ what makes you say that, kairi ? ❞ if he had made her feel less than what she was worth, he would never forgive himself. although he didn’t want her to get hurt, he knows that he can TRUST her to take care of herself.

     a free hand moves to her cheek. seeing this expression on her face caused him such grief. how could he do this to HER ? ❝ i promised that i would never leave you behind again, right ? i could never be better without you ! ❞
