28 April, CHC @ BOS, 4-5, win
I will definitely take the unbridled joy of a walk-off series win on a Sunday night at Fenway. Especially as it was looking so dicey in the eighth, when the Cubs tied the game with a deflating (for Red Sox fans) three-run dinger in the top of the eighth. Which was deflating for several reasons but first and foremost was the it cost Tanner Houck a well-deserved win. Feel Chris Martin, the reliever who gave up the dinger, should be buying Tanner a beer. Anyway, it all turned out ok in the end, with the Sox once again three above .500 and continuing to confound experts and pundits with regards to how on earth they are managing to pull this all off. Plenty of bright sides.
Houck had another exceptional start as Red Sox pitching continues to impress. He went six and two thirds, struck out 9 and allowed only one run. He did hit a batter but I'm sure that guy's fine.
Kenley Jansen got the W with a 1-2-3 ninth. No heart attacks, thank goodness.
The Sox lineup walked five times! In fact, Jarren Duran walked in the ninth and that turned into the winning run when he was driven in by O'Neill's bloop RBI. Devers walked twice, one of which was intentional.
Connor Wong continues to impress, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Raffy seems to be finding his happy place, going 2-for-3 and scoring twice.
We won! On a walkoff!
Bobby Dalbec stole a base and got a hit. He also struck out three times but I'm focussing on the happy.
The Cubs made an error but we did not.
We won AND we have a day off on Monday! Hurray!

27 April, CHC @ BOS, 0-17, win
Gosh. With the announcement of Tristan Casas going on the 60-day IL and basically a bullpen day, I was not expecting a titanic, crushing shutout to demolish the Cubs. I might’ve been worried about garbage time but it was OUR garbage that concerned me. It turns out that was unwarranted (though understandable). I don’t really even know where to start. What a delightful routing. Let’s have a look at the numerous bright sides.
The ridiculous offensive outpouring stands so large that I’m going to focus first on pitching. Winckowski, Bernadino, Slaten, Booser and then, to the surprise of all, Pablo Reyes, threw up zeroes. They only walked two people. The Cubs only managed five hits. Slaten was nasty. And Pablo Reyes got all three outs he needed and HELD the shutout. That was fun to watch.
Ceddanne Rafaela broke out. He went 4-for-4 with seven RBIs, three runs scored and was just a triple shy of the cycle.
Masa Yoshida relished returning to the lineup, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a run batted in.
Tyler O’Neill hit another dinger but this time someone was on base for his first multi-run dinger of the season. He went 3-for-five and scored three times.
Bobby Dalbec went 2-for-4, knocked in three (including one on a bunt that kind of blew open the game). Really want him to do well, even though I think he’s heading back to Worcester with Cooper coming over from the Cubs.
In all, the Red Sox scored 17 runs on 21 hits. They took two walks and only struck out six times. Bloops landed for hits, they found their spots. It was great.
The Celtics and Bruins won as well! Boston is doing its thing!

26 April, CHC @ BOS, 7-1, loss
Kutter Crawford (still real name) getting his first loss and the Sox continuing to suck at Fenway was a pretty shitty way to start the weekend. The Cubs kicked the shot out of us and Shota Imanaga pitched a hell of a game. Both teams made errors. I'm pretty annoyed at losing at home again. Bright sides?
We only struck out nine times. I'm seeing any game with less than ten a moral victory at least.
Tyler O'Neill went deep and was 2-for-four.
We walked twice and both those times was Rob Refnsyder. So he walked twice.
We still have a winning record.
We'll get 'em tomorrow.

25 April, BOS @ CLE, 4-6, loss
Well, we went 4-2 on the road trip, even though we totally fucking lost the series to the Guardians. We also totally fucking made more errors. Two more. Also, we lost a game in which Bobby Dalbec got a hit, which makes me sad. I really enjoyed the idea of winning every game he got a hit in. Alas, twas not to be. Nor was striking out less than a dozen times, as the Red Sox did indeed strike out a dozen times last night. They also gave up yet another unearned run. Because, you know, errors and stuff. But, and this is important, the Sox didn’t give up. They went under by five runs in the second and kept trying and chipping away. They outhit the Guardians (who do, I believe, have the best record in baseball) 10-8 and fought hard. And our one win of the series was a great deal more convincing than either of their two. Well, sort of. Anyway, what I am trying to say is that there are bright sides.
We had two walks last night. That’s better than zero. It’s even better than one.
Raffy continues to look good at the plate. He went 3-for-5 and scored a run.
Wilyer Abreu didn’t get a hit but he still managed to plate a run. Good RBI, Wilyer.
Reese McGuire went 2-for-3 and scored a run. He also took one of those walks, which cancels out his strike out.
Aside from it getting out of control in the second, it was a strong bullpen day, with five pitchers working seven and a third innings and only one unearned run between them.
Now, we go home and hope to rebalance our dreadful Fenway performances over the last couple of seasons.

24 April, BOS @ CLE, 8-0, win
I didn’t mention the Tristan Casas injury yesterday because I was suffering from a bit of “who-the-fuck-is-next” fatigue. The addition of Brayan Bello to the IL makes it sort of impossible to ignore the frustrating reality that the IL continues to grow, no matter how much we don’t want that to be the case. So Casas has a broken rib, notoriously unpredictable with regards to recovery times and Bello has some manner of lat tightness or something. After I read 15-day IL the details got a bit foggy to be honest. That news, along with losing the first game of the series, didn’t have me terribly hopeful for last night. But guess what? Baseball doesn’t give a shit whether you’re hopeful or not. Kicking the shit out of Cleveland was the sort of fun I knew I needed but didn’t expect to get. Plenty of bright sides.
We dropped our strikeouts down to eight. Should that be a bright side? Yes. We even managed a walk. Should this be the first bright side? Kinda?
Cooper Criswell, continuing the trend of alliterative starting pitchers, did good, going a solid five, giving up three hits and striking out three.
The bullpen were also solid, giving up a hit and striking out four with no walks issued. Good job, Joely Rodriguez and Zack Kelly.
Whilst Raffy coming back hot is definitely a bright side, Connor Wong shines a bit brighter, going four for four with TWO dingers, three RBIs and two runs scored. He also didn’t strike out because you can’t go four-for-four and strike out unless maybe you steal first on a dropped foul tip? Someone more curious than me should check on that.
Raffy came back from his bone bruise super hot, going 3-for-4, hitting a dinger, driving in two, scoring two, and putting everyone’s mind at ease scoring from first. He did strike out but he also walked, so good eye, Raffy.
Wilyer Abreu, continuing a good string of appearances here, went four-for-five, knocked in a run and scored a run. Good job, Wilyer.
Ceddanne Rafaela did much better batting ninth than he did batting first, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. He also DID NOT STRIKE OUT. That is good.
Bobby Dalbec had another hit. The Red Sox are now playing 1.000 when Bobby gets a hit. Get more hits, Bobby. (he’s batting 0.54 at the moment).
We didn’t make an error.
Tyler O’Neill came back as well and scored a run.
We won!
Maybe we’ll do it again tonight!
Did I mention we got SIXTEEN HITS? We got sixteen hits.

23 April, BOS @ CLE, 1-4, loss
Yes, I did get my hopes up when Wilyer Abreu hit a solo dinger in the 7th. The way Houck was dealing, surely that would be enough? Surely it wouldn't matter that the lineup was on course to strike out 12 times (without a single walk), because dingers save the day! Alas, twas not to be. It turns out striking out 12 times can begin to undermine attempts to win baseball games. The Guardians also seem to be pretty good at baseball, so they weren't going to just let us win. And they have José Ramirez, who is pretty good at baseball and didn't strike out even once. That was one of those annoying losses that should just be a tough break rather than showing off one of the glaring issues with the team. Especially as they managed to not make any errors. I feel it's too early to say we've turned a corner on the cack-handed fielding errors, but here's hoping. Anyway. We lost. We struck out a lot. Are there bright sides? Of course there are.
Tanner Houck, whilst not as dominant as his previous start, was solid, going six and striking out 4. He gave up 2 runs on five hits. He was annoyed at himself and tagged for the loss, but I feel it was a team loss rather than all down to him.
Wilyer Abreu, as mentioned earlier, hit a dinger. And he only struck out once.
Rob Refsnyder didn't strike out at all and went 3-for-3.
Maybe we're going to stop striking out so much. Here's hoping. Let's get 'em tonight.

21 April, BOS @ PIT, 6-1, win
Our fourth(!) series win and second sweep of the season comes whilst we're all still losing count of quite how many starters are on the injury list and have given up even trying to count the unearned runs the team has given up (none in the last series with the Pirates, natch). This is weird and I don't really know how to react. Which is kind of exciting. I have no idea what is going to happen. We are very bad against good teams (1-5 against teams over .500) and very good against bad or middling teams (the rest of our record... you can do the math I am done with arithmetic). I think from the very start of this stupid blog I have said the most important thing is to beat bad teams. The Sox are doing that. They are three games above .500 and looked great against the Pirates who, admittedly, looked totally fucking lost by the end of the series (but who also got off to a similarly strong start this season... on the road... perhaps when they visit us they will return the favour... anyway). But they still are striking out WAY TOO MUCH... even though they have the SECOND MOST HOMERS IN THE MAJORS... I don't understand this team. Their ERA continues to drop (though Kutter Crawford's rose to a massive .66 after yesterday's outing where he gave up one solo homer), they have a bunch of dingers, but because their defence has been so fucking cack-handed and they either hit dingers or they strike out, there's nobody on base when their dingers come, so they are 13-10 instead of 18-5 (which is, terrifyingly, close to what their record would be if you took away the unearned runs... really... look it up... I'm done with arithmetic for the day). So yeah. God knows. Netflix are either congratulating themselves for being geniuses or pulling their hair out for being idiots but I think there are some crazy fucking stories coming out of this year. Anyway. Bright sides.
We won on a bullpen day and Winckowski, after some rough relief outings of late, was solid (though he did allow the first run of the game). He went three and a third and scattered three hits and a run. Only one K but he's been working a lot.
The bullpen, Booser, Weissert, Slaten (who got his first big league win), and Anderson put in six innings of shutout ball, allowing four hits and striking out four. So the Red Sox appear to still be the best pitching team in the majors. I don't know when the last time we could say that was. Probably when Chris Sale was healthy. So, um, 2018?
Wilyer Abreu, fast becoming a stalwart of the bright side list, had another strong catch, went 3-for-5, knocked in two runs and scored once.
Ceddanne Rafaela took a walk. He also had a hit and scored a run. But walks are important now. Trust me. Because that kid wants to hit everything. Good job Ceddanne. He also stole a base.
Jarren Duran walked TWICE and scored twice and got a hit. He also stole a base.
Rob Refsnyder also walked. He also had a hit and knocked in a run and scored a run. AND HE ALSO STOLE A BASE! I miss Ricky Henderson and want everyone to steal more bases, please.
Connor Wong walked and scored a run BECAUSE HE WALKED. He had an 0-fer. But walked and called a good game behind a bunch of different arms.
Bobby Dalbec walked too. And played first base really well. Defence and walking get mentions now because we need them.
Reese McGuire came in to pinch hit and knocked in two runs. Good job, Reese. If you're not going to walk, hit and get some runs in.
We won!
We have a day off and a sweep and a winning record! How cool is that?!

20 April BOS @ PIT, 4-2, win
Oh hey, we got Kutter Crawford (still not only his real name, but apparently the correct spelling of his real name ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) a win, finally. He totally fucking deserved that win. He deserved a few other wins but we are trying to focus on the NOW. Mostly because in the NOW we've won a couple. As soon as we lose a couple we will focus on the THEN. But not yet. Now is for the NOW. And NOW, on Saturday afternoon, we played some good baseball. Did it help that the Pirates are playing bad baseball? Yes. Yes, it really did. The Pirates are, sadly for Pittsburgh fans, playing really bad after a strong start to the season. As the fan of a team that was doing that same thing about four days ago, I really feel for them. But also as a fan of a different team I definitely want the Red Sox to kick the shit out of the Pirates when they're down. And anyone who watched the game will know the home plate umpire didn't do the Pirates any favours either. Anyway, we won a game of baseball away from home (apparently not being at home is our super power, which makes an ownership hell-bent on sucking every last penny out of Fenway without investing in the team a little uncomfortable, I assume) and so let's look at the bright sides.
Kutter Crawford was good. Not great, but good. And, most importantly, when he got into trouble with the bases loaded and only one out, he managed not one but two fucking strike outs and saved the day. He went six, kept his count down, struck out six, gave up seven hits and one run (that run was a dinger with nobody on, so, like not the end of the world). He walked 3 but, and I need to stress this, Saturday's strike zone was a shambles and could serve as evidence of the need to shitcan home plate umpires entirely. Anyway. Way to go Kutter, you earned that win and a couple of others.
Jansen redeemed his last blown save and climbed up the all-time-most-amazing-closers ladder by striking out the side in the ninth. He's fun to watch this season. He obviously wants to get as high up on the total career saves list as humanly possible.
Masa Yoshida had a day, going three-for-four with a two-run dinger.
Jarren Duran, surfing sand worms and living his best life, started the game with a triple on what looked like the first pitch but was certainly the first at bat if it wasn't.
Wilyer Abreu made an amazing catch, knocked in Duran from his triple in the first but most importantly, and I really mean this, walked three times. This team seems addicted to strike outs like the 1986 Mets were addicted to white lines that were not base paths. Be patient and walk more, dammit. And good job, Wilyer.
Bobby Dalbec did not get another hit but he knocked in a run and played good first base even though he started at third because oh shit Tristan Casas is on the IL now with a strained rib. I really want Bobby D to do well. He's a good fielder and seems to have a grounding that gives confidence to some of the greener players. Of course, all the veterans are hurt, so every fucking player is green. But that's ok.
Refsnyder continued his welcome return flashing some good leather in right, hitting a double and scoring a run. He also walked. Good eye, Rob.
Enmanuel Valdez had a hit and walked. The walk makes me happier. This team leads the majors in strike outs, and not in the fun pitching way. In the frustrating not fun hitting way. Take walks, people.
We won!
The umpiring was a shambles but the Pirates suffered for it more than we did! It's not always going to be like that! Important to remember the next time it DOESN'T go our way.
Winning meant we won the series!

19 April, BOS @ PIT, 8-1, win
Wasn’t that delightful? We had pitching, we had bats, we still had an error to remind us it’s still the 2024 Red Sox… but we kicked off this road trip in the sort of style that makes me think maybe my “clean slate” chat after the Guardians series wasn’t just optimistic bullshit after all. I’m fond of Pittsburgh. The Pirates is a cool name for a baseball team. But I’m glad we beat them and hope we beat them again. So let’s look at all those bright sides.
Brayan Bello continued to do good things. He went six innings, struck out seven, allowed only one hit and walked two. That brought Red Sox starters ERA down to 1.72 and yes that is still the best in the majors.
Cam Booser might’ve given up a run in the ninth but he also struck out Cutch and made his major league debut at 31, which is wild. You should read about him here.
The lineup looked good. Only Jarred Duran failed to get a hit but he was probably tired from riding sand worms. Tristan Casas, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela and Rob Refsynder (welcome back, Rob!) all hit dingers.
Abreu had a bit of a night indeed, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI from that dinger.
Rafaela had that dinger and stole a base. He also made an error, which is sad. But it didn’t lead to any unearned runs. Which is happy. Or lucky. Or both.
Bobby Dalbec got a hit! Finally! I’m so happy for him. Hopefully he’ll get more because we need him to be good.
Enmanuel Valdez had a two-run two out RBI. That’s nice.
Yoshida had a hit and scored a run. He’s been struggling so that’s nice too.
Chase Anderson pitched two and threw up zeroes, striking out two.
We won and we’re back over .500!
Let’s do it again tonight!

18 April, CLE @ BOS, 5-4, loss
After confounding the experts with a strong west coast road trip going 7-3, the Red Sox confounded their fans and probably themselves by going 3-7 on their first homestand. It’s been gruelling to watch for those like me who love this team. Remember we got to the ALCS three years ago? We made another two errors yesterday. Three of Cleveland’s runs were unearned. We’ve given up 25 unearned runs this season and we’re only twenty games in. Yet we have the best ERA in baseball. We’re wasting good pitching right now and it’s agonising. That said, there are a few bright sides…
Jarred Duran (insert Dune gag here) looked good with a two-run triple in the sixth that raised hopes of a dramatic comeback. It wasn’t. But the hope was nice for a time and I love a triple.
On a day game with no starter the bullpen acquitted itself well. Take away the unearned runs and they save the day. Sadly, you can’t takeaway the unearned runs. Kinda feel David Hamilton and Pablo Reyes owe everyone on the pitching staff a fucking beer. Also feel that if a loss is down to unearned runs, it’s the fielders who made the errors that should be charged with the loss and NOT the pitcher.
I’m feeling kind of sanguine about being at .500 again. Like it’s a fresh start. We’re going on the road. Perhaps a change of scene will help. As it stands we’ve won three series, lost two and split one. It all feels a little better when you look at it like that, tbh.
Let’s go get Pittsburgh.

17 April, CLE @ BOS, 0-2, win
Well, gosh. I did not have a complete-game, three-hit, 94 pitch shutout on my list of things that may help the Sox bounce back from a rough few games but I will definitely take it. A few more runs might've been nice. And, you know, a few more hits to go along with them. But that seems to be splitting hairs. To be honest I'm just happy we won and have a chance to split the series. I'm also happy we didn't make any errors. But games like that make you think maybe the Sox have real potential? Are thoughts like that dangerous? Of course they are. Getting all hugely hopeful from one impressive game is a recipe for disaster. But I still kinda wanna. Anyway, bright sides.
Tanner Houck, obviously. He threw 69 (nice) of his 94 pitches for strikes, faced only 29 batters, shut down the Guardians, allowed only three hits, didn't walk anyone, was quick and efficient, and threw the first Red Sox complete game in I-don't-know-how-long. It was the quickest complete game since 2010. Considering the battering the bullpen has been getting, that was a huge relief.
Connor Wong was about as helpful as a platoon partner can get, catching and calling an amazing game whilst going 2-for-3 with a monster dinger with two outs in the fourth. What a dude.
We didn't make any errors. That is going to be a bright side for the rest of the season (every time it's true, that is).
Devers was in the lineup! maybe his knee isn't as bad as it looked Tuesday night. He had an 0-fer and struck out three times though... maybe he should've had a night off?
We won!
Nobody got hurt!
We might win tonight too! That'd be cool!

16 April, CLE @ BOS, 10-7, 11th inning
Well, shit. Raffy is maybe hurt, Garrett Whitlock is maybe hurt, Jansen blew a save, Winckowski's seems already burned out, we're still making errors (Abreu with his second in as many games), we're back down to .500, Tristan Casas got caught stealing in the first, and we lost another in extra innings AT HOME. Ugh. It's been a rough home stand thus far. We haven't lost the series yet - we can still break even. I want us to break even. I'm hoping we can break even. Are there bright sides? Yes, there are bright sides.
Enmanuel Valdez hit a very, very long home run. He's not been doing that much recently. It's nice when he does.
Tristan Casas (making up for bad base running) and Connor Wong also both went deep in the big 5-run sixth inning which, had things gone better, would have been all we needed as we had the lead but oh hey I guess we're just doomed this season.
Wong had a good night, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
David Hamilton got a couple of hits.
Wilyer Abreu might've made another error but he also scored twice with zero hits. That's always fun.
We may still break even on the series. Hope springs... well, maybe not eternal, but at least for tonight.

15 April, CLE @ BOS, 6-0, loss
Losing on Patriot's Day seems a bit rubbish. The early morning start should favour the home team but apparently not. In spite of the lopsided score it was a bit of an up and down game. There was horror, with the collision of Raffy Devers and Tyler O'Neill (O'Neill needed eight stitches), there was frustration, with Wilyer Abreu's throwing error, there was excitement, with Wilyer Abreu's amazing catch at the wall, and there was that sinking feeling you get when a tight pitchers' duel reverts to a routing in the last couple of innings of the game. Anyway. There were a few bright sides.
Kutter Crawford (autocorrect very much wants me to spell that "Cutter") must be feeling pretty jinxed at the moment. Dude's been putting up zeroes since the first week and the bats turn to noodles when he takes the mound. His ERA is 0.42 and he has neither a win nor a loss this season. He went five and two thirds, didn't walk anyone and struck out six, allowing only two hits. I really hope the team can put some runs behind one of these starts. At the moment they're being wasted.
Wilyer Abreu's amazing catch to rob Jose Ramirez in the first was fun to watch. It was a more innocent time, when everything seemed possible. I like that about first innings.
I don't know if it's a bright side, but Gronk's spiking of the first pitch could be seen as a meta-commentary on Sox fielding thus far this season. Just sayin'. Also, I'm not going to lie, I thought it looked kinda weird.
It looks like Raffy and Tyler survived their collision, which is a relief. We could do with fewer injuries, please.
We'll get 'em tonight.

14 April, LAA @ BOS, 4-5, win
That was probably harder work than it should have been, but I’m delighted we got through with a win and ultimately a series win. We’ve only lost one series so far this season, which is good. That we lost that series in the midst of such calamity, that’s bad. But this blog tries as hard as it can to focus on the good. It’s sort of my thing. So let’s look at those bright sides.
We won!
We not only won, we were able to hold off a potential Angels comeback in the ninth, with Kenley Jansen striking out Mike Trout after giving up a run. Terrifying stuff that turned out good for a change.
Brayan Bello turned in another solid if not great start. The starters have been strong and continue to give me hope for the season. He went five and a third, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out eight. He walked two.
Tyler O’Neill (now leading the majors in dingers) and Tristan Casas hit back-to-back dingers with two outs in the first. That’s so cool! Two out RBIs are good.
Masa Yoshida, who I predicted was due just yesterday, came good and hit his first dinger of the season. His swing is so lovely when it gets going.
Alex Cora’s morning runs and races before the games make me happy. I think it’s cool he’s got a new hobby and as a runner myself I can vouch for it being a great form of meditation, which I can imagine is much needed being the current manager of the Boston Red Sox.
We won! Even if we had a few heart attacks along the way.

13 April, LAA @ BOS, 2-7, win
Well. We won. That's pretty great. For a lot of reasons. We were on the verge of having the worst home start in Red Sox history. One more loss in a row and we would have set a record. I was hopeful that would not happen. And it didn't. And the Red Sox played well. They hit the ball hard where the other team wasn't, they fielded well and didn't make any errors. So let's look at those bright sides.
We won! After four losses in a row that is definitely a ringing bright side.
Cooper Criswell, called up from the minors, had a solid start. It wasn't technically a quality start as he only went four innings, but he struck out four, walked only one and gave up a couple of runs.
The bullpen threw up zeroes. They struck out six and scattered a couple of hits but gave up no runs.
The Sox didn't make any errors. Is this the turning of a new leaf? I fucking hope so.
Wilyer Abreu brightened up, going two for four with a RBI and a couple of runs scored. He also fought some brutal wind in right field to track down some fly balls and make outs.
Tristan Casas hit an absolute BOMB in the first. A two-run dinger that went, like, 429 feet.
David Hamilton had a couple of runs and played well at short. Has the mess of our infield been down to nerves? A bunch of new young players terrified and trying to hard? Maybe.
Ceddanne Rafaela took a walk. If you don't think that's worthy of note then you're not paying attention. He also knocked in a run.
Masa Yoshida went 2-for-4 and knocked in a couple of runs as well. He's due one of his hot streaks.
Is this the beginning of the ship being righted? I have no idea. But it would be nice for them to grab a bit of that magic from the first week of the season.

12 April, LAA @ BOS, 7-0, loss
Maybe we’ll never win another game at home. Last night was brutal. The Angels beat us AND we lost. Another three unearned runs on the pile and Tanner Houck not at his best anyway. Garbage time usually comes around in July or August, not April. But this home stand feels like garbage time. Or, you know, just garbage.
I am remaining sort of hopeful simply because I refuse to believe this level of incompetence on the field can continue. I refuse to believe that any team can be consistently this flailingly incompetent, especially when there were a few games in there that they were not. Remember that winning record and great west coast road trip? That was the same fucking team as the one that seems to be trying to set an MLB record for unearned runs allowed. What the actual fuck? Anyway. Bright sides? I guess.
The bullpen were good for three and a third innings. They struck out four and didn't let anything bad happen. Well done Bernardino and Anderson.
This can't go on like this. It just can't.
Please let's win tonight.

11 April, BAL @ BOS, 9-4, loss, 10th inning
That series was brutal. The Orioles didn't need to beat us, we were perfectly capable of beating ourselves senseless. Unearned runs (16 so far this season!), defence that continues to sink lower and lower, more injuries (Raffy's shoulder), bullpen meltdowns, too many strikeouts, too little patience at the plate. I feel bad for Alex Cora. I feel bad for the team. I feel bad for us, the fans who watched their team blow a lead two nights in a row. They could have won both those games. The home opener not so much. but last night and Wednesday? Yeah. They could've done that. Anyway. Bright sides.
Garrett Whitlock looked solid. Yes, his last inning was a bit of a grind but he put the Sox in a position to win, giving up only one run on four hits (that run was a dinger).
Connor Wong, pinch-hitting after Reese McGuire got booted for arguing a third strike, hit a dinger to even the score in the bottom of the eighth (the Sox had already given up their lead due to errors, unearned runs and frustrating fielding cackhandedness.
Wilyer Abreu had a couple of hits and knocked in a run.
Jarren Duran had a couple of hits and knocked in a run. He also didn't drop a routine fly ball.
Sorry I'm so grumpy. But I am so grumpy.
The big bad Orioles have left town and we still have a winning record. Let's beat up the Angels to make ourselves feel better.
