COVEN – three jewelry artists from a new generation exhibition Periode: 25/3-21/5 2023 at Kunstbanken, Hamar Kristine Ervik, Iris Elva Olafsdottir and Sayo Ota, born in Norway, Iceland and Japan respectively, all studied metal and jewellery at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. Together they mark a generational shift in Norwegian jewellery art by developing conceptual jewellery art. The exhibits comprise of temporary, transitory and eroding necklaces made from steel, seed, soap, silver, thread, enamel and Japanese lacquer. While using traditional techniques such as making chains from steel and silver, Japanese lacquering, and simple, nostalgic seeds of a string, they reject jewellery as functional objects. With this exhibition, Kunstbanken wishes to promote new arts and crafts curators and show parts of the extensive and varied repertoire by upcoming jewellery artists. #Repost @thevesselmag ・・・ The outermost layer of objects can trick and deceive us, and it requires a great deal of intention and skill to make silver, or onion skins(!) look like mother-of-pearl, to make aluminium shine and ripple like water, or to make layers of lacquered hemp cloth shine like black marble 👀 🔍 Discover the significance of surface with Linn Sigrid Bratland's essay ‘The Vital Role of Finishing Work in Silversmithing’ 📝 Don't miss this insightful read about the importance of manual skills and tacit knowledge in a world of emerging technologies. @thevesselmag ・・・ We love these photos by Ivar Kvaal taken at Kristine Ervik and Olaf Hodne’s studio in Kirkeristen, an old church bazaar from the mid-1800s, in Oslo. For this shoot they shared the space with Sayo Ota, a Japanese artist who attended @khiometaldepartment around the same time as Ervik and Hodne, and who is currently doing her MFA in Japan and Norway. The artistic practice of Ota and Ervik are quite dissimilar, but both deal with impermanence and transition in their work, which is investigated in Olaf Hodne’s article in the most recent issue of The Vessel, which also features Icelandic jewellery artist @iriselva ✨ All photos by @ivarkvaal 1: Sayo Ota, Kristine Ervik and Olaf Hodne 2: Kristine Ervik at work 3: Latex bracelets by Ervik 4: rusted neck collar by Ervik 5: Work in progress by Ervik 6: Portrait of Kristine Ervik 7: Bath bomb necklaces by Ota 8: Enamel brooch by Ota 9: Kanshitsu dry lacquer necklace by Ota 10: Portrait of Sayo Ota Olaf Hodne’s article is titled “Jewellery Thoughts of Impermanence” and is available through the link in bio 🔗 @kervik.jewellery @sayo_ota @olaf_hodne @iriselva Issue 5 “The Outermost Layer” is edited by @luihn and @knapagnieszka and published by @norwegiancrafts https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpvv_1UIUjd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Somehow, I tend to choose materials which should be polished all the time. This semester I finally am practicing a Japanese lacquer technique to bring my works to Europe soon. (Tokyo University of the Arts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgHShN8pxS6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

After 10 days our group show “Dumplings” is over. This theme could be transformative forms and our surroundings to magnificent ideas. I imagine the earth is a sort of dumpling and how we conduct ourselves as ingredients. Through this series I try to convey both visible and invisible borders between us or places by hanging it with a tense feeling to reflect on what happens on this planet and how we confront various situations such as the meaning of prosséssion. While you stand in front of the object and look at the mirror behind, you see yourself wearing a necklace in the same way as everybody else.
