If nothing else (and there is so much else, the entire report is biased and dangerous to the lives of trans people on multiple levels), the Cass report is an example of poor research and research communication. It used AI art for images of trans people, it features graphs which do not make sense and I’m unsure of the point being conveyed by the figure legend, and the criteria from literature rejection was entirely biased and based on a fundamental misunderstanding of clinical trials (bc you cannot ethically or reasonably double blind trials of HRT/puberty blockers bc the patient will notice, therefore it’s no longer a blind trial, but the data is still valid if the person is fully aware of what they are taking bc you can measure biological/physical markers)
I’ll be looking further into this when I have time but this is my initial take as a non binary person with a hefty biomed/biology background (1 BSc, one MRes, 1 PGCE, doing an MSc)

Okay, this might be an unpopular opinion, but if you want to combat the spread of misinformation then you have to let go of any belief that people not talking about an issue means that they don’t care. The only way to reduce the spread of misinformation and disinformation is to research claims before you spread them, and there is so much information constantly being thrown at people through social media and the 24 hour news cycle that it’s impossible to fact check every claim. The same can be said about AI generated images, if you look closely then you can notice certain tells that something is AI generated but no one really has the time to analyze every single image that crosses their path.
If we expect people to talk about and spread information on every social/political/economic issue that occurs then the result will be that people will spread misinformation/disinformation because they will not have the time or mental capacity to research every single thing that happens on Earth just to make sure that they aren’t being fed incorrect information.
Only researching claims that set off a red flag or seem incorrect doesn’t actually do much to prevent misinformation, because there are plenty of claims that will seem correct on the surface or that will align with your view of the world that you won’t think to research. You have to research every claim if you want to avoid misinformation, and you can’t research every claim made by someone online.
The only solution is to accept that some people aren’t going to talk about certain issues, not because they don’t care, but because they have chosen to focus on other issues for the time being and don’t want to talk about an issue that they don’t know much about. And we really need to stop treating that like a bad thing. If you spread yourself too thin then you’re not going to accomplish anything. It’s actually good to have people devoting themselves to learning about and fighting a specific issue, that’s how progress is made.

hey whatever happened to “if there’s 10 people at a table and a Nazi sits down there’s 11 Nazis at a table??” or does violence and hatred against Jews not count when it’s your pet fandom cause
Imagine having the fucking audacity to ask this to a Jewish person.
[Also there is something painfully hypocritical that my last post was literally "you should not be agreeing with Ted Cruz, you are aligning yourself in agreement with Ted Cruz" and I get - the sitting at the same table argument wherein I'm in the wrong for pointing out this metaphor is exactly what people are doing? Y'all need to brush up on some reading comprehension and a much healthier dose of self awareness, please].

If you're agreeing with someone who would clearly throw you under the bus when it's a benefit, you really gotta take a fucking step back to ask why you feel like you'd agree with them.
And the reason why is because this is a really fucking one dimensional perspective on what's going on with college campuses and the whole issue of movements dealing with Israel and Palestine.
Yes, there are Pro Palestinians harassing Jewish people with violence.
There are also Pro Palestinian people working alongside Jewish people.
There are also Jewish people working alongside Pro Palestinian people.
There are also Jewish people harassing Pro Palestinian people.
INCLUDING IN THESE VERY EVENTS BEING MENTIONED.
And that's not even getting into separating Jewish people as a whole and Israeli nationalism with individuals.
But by watering this shit down to one singular perspective on events, it's very fucking easy to start skewing this into a black and white argument of "The Jews vs The Pro Palestinians", and that's not how any of this ever fucking works. Even when discussing other anti-war protests and civil rights protests in history, there is never a singular Good and Bad side.
And it's a huge fucking disservice to literally everyone and everything to fall for this kind of fucking propaganda.
Do better, because you can.
by Virginia Kruta
Cruz’s response got straight to the point: “If this is a student, she should be expelled. If this is a #Columbia professor, she should be fired. No university should allow one member of the community to advocate the murder of other members of the community.”
Cruz was not alone in his sentiments, as others flooded X with comments on the photo. AG added a second post, saying, “This image also made me think of a great line I saw from @neontaster the other day: The difference between a radical anti-Zionist and a moderate anti-Zionist is that a radical anti-Zionist wants to kill you, and a moderate anti-Zionist wants a radical anti-Zionist to kill you.”
“This was the least of it. At least one Jewish student was attacked at Yale. Several Jewish students were threatened at Columbia,” AG added in another post. “There are videos of the crowds threatening violence, telling Jews to go back to Europe, cheering terrorism, celebrating the American flag being taken down. This is all happening on 2 American campuses. It’s clear that these campuses are clearly not safe for Jewish students right now and not particularly productive for others as they have been taken over by antisemitic and pro-terrorist mobs. This is all coordinated and well-funded by some national activist groups, but the schools allowed for it to get to this place by allowing those involved to keep pushing the line/normalizing such behavior and they hired faculty/administrators who encourage it. Now it’s up to these schools to figure out how to address these mobs. It’s their problem because their reputations are on the line and their failures that led us here. If they refuse to address it, they should face civil rights investigations, lawsuits from students, and permanent reputations loss.”

"In a historic “first-of-its-kind” agreement the government of British Colombia has acknowledged the aboriginal ownership of 200 islands off the west coast of Canada.
The owners are the Haida nation, and rather than the Canadian government giving something to a First Nation, the agreement admits that the “Xhaaidlagha Gwaayaai” or the “islands at the end of world,” always belonged to them, a subtle yet powerful difference in the wording of First Nations negotiating.
BC Premier David Eby called the treaty “long overdue” and once signed, will clear the way for half a million hectares (1.3 million acres) of land to be managed by the Haida.
Postal service, shipping lanes, school and community services, private property rights, and local government jurisdiction, will all be unaffected by the agreement, which will essentially outline that the Haida decide what to do with the 200 or so islands and islets.
“We could be facing each other in a courtroom, we could have been fighting each other for years and years, but we chose a different path,” said Minister of Indigenous Relations of BC, Murray Rankin at the signing ceremony, who added that it took creativity and courage to “create a better world for our children.”
Indeed, making the agreement outside the courts of the formal treaty process reflects a vastly different way of negotiating than has been the norm for Canada.
“This agreement won’t only raise all boats here on Haida Gwaii – increase opportunity and prosperity for the Haida people and for the whole community and for the whole province – but it will also be an example and another way for nations – not just in British Columbia, but right across Canada – to have their title recognized,” said Eby.
In other words, by deciding this outside court, Eby and the province of BC hope to set a new standard for how such land title agreements are struck."

Literally just saw a someone on Jumblr posting about how China, Russia, and Qatar fund universities by quoting NAS, which is known for it's whole whining and bitching in their publication about "The Vanishing West" and how education in the US no longer centers White Western people.
Like.
I am finding it more and more horrific how Jewish people double down on heavily conservative systems and structures that have historically been used against us in the name of antisemitism. I had to deal with parents last week who wanted to censor what language is used by students talking to each other in our school because it made their students uncomfortable, despite acknowledging that the things making them uncomfortable were... Palestinian students talking about why they moved to the US and how their families were treated in West Bank?
Y'all.
How fucking far down the rabbit hole are you willing to go?
I don't get it.
I just really fucking don't get it.

Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1
The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.
So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.
So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.
Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.
And the probe is working again.
From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

genuinely fuck all of you for diluting the meaning of “nazi” down to “person i don’t think is radical enough” and the absolute devastation of the holocaust to “jews whining about a couple of them being killed.” fuck you. i hope you all spend the rest of your lives embarrassed and ashamed at the bold faced antisemitism you took part in.

I think the reason a lot of leftists struggle with disability justice is that they haven't moved past the concept that discrimination isn't bad because it's objectively "wrong." yes, sexists are objectively wrong when they try to claim women are dumber than men. yes, antisemites are objectively wrong that jewish people are inherently greedy and run the state. yes, racists are wrong when they try to claim that white people are the superior race. and so on.
but then with disabled people, there are a lot of objective truths to the discrimination we face. people with IDs/LDs do fall behind and struggle with certain concepts. physically disabled people are often weaker and less capable of performing demanding tasks than able bodied people. many of us with mental illnesses are more reckless and less responsible. a lot of us are dependent on others and do not contribute much "worth".
and guess what? disabled people still deserve a place in the world. disabled people still deserve the supports they need. because they are people, and that should be enough to support them and believe they deserve a place at the table.
if your only rebuttal against discrimination is its objective inaccuracies, you are meeting bigots where they are at. you are validating the very concept that if and when people are truly incapable of being equal to the majority, that means they are worth less. this causes some leftists to then try to deny the objective realities of disabled people and/or become ableist themselves.
your rallying behind marginalized groups should start and end with the fact that people are completely worthy of life and equity, because they are fellow human beings and that should, frankly, be enough.

Since the r-slur is making a comeback (you know, the word that starts with R, has six letters, and ends in D), I'm gonna make a little PSA:
Yes, it's an ableist slur.
Terms like "asshat," "head-up-ass," "up their own ass," and "high on their own farts" exist. There's also words like crap, dogshit, half-assed, assclown, and chucklefuck. And on the less vulgar side, there are terms like ridiculous, nonsense, train wreck, pointless, insipid, self-absorbed, pretentious, annoying, boring, contemptible, vile, and disgusting.
Substituting words like restarted, poptarted, brain damaged, smoothbrain, etc. is still ableist, because either 1. you obviously still mean the r-word, or 2. you're still using disability as an insult.
