Week 12 – Public Art
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here me and my boyfriend spent the day at the park with our two dogs. It was a great way to get outdoors and hang out with our friends. We gathered our friends for my dogs birthday, but also made it a painting party. It was super duper fun as we all had small canvases and used it to create whatever we want. The top painting was my boyfriends and the bottom was mine. My concept was to see was different ideas and styles people had. I wanted to know what the first thing that popped into people's heads was. I made sure to tell everyone not to look online for something specific and just go with the flow. It helped to see how creative we really were. I loved the entire experience! It was so fun to share and laugh about watch we drew and painted. It made us really look at how others think and was a great way to spend the day!

Week 12 – Artist – Abramovic-Althamer
Marina Abramovic is a Serbian conceptual artist. She is greatly known for her wonderful sound pieces, as well as her performance art. She first documented her stuff through photos, but later switched it up by creating videos. She is a very powerful artist who uses a lot of her mind and body into her work. She personally uses herself to create this great relationship shown within a person. It can really speak to individuals and get them to really find a deeper understanding within themselves. She seems to go above and beyond and never disappoint her audience. She makes sure that hr audience is involved within her work and expresses it very much.
Pawel Althamer is a contemporary polish sculptor, performer, and installations creator. He focuses mostly on his sculptures and a lot of his artwork consist of the human body. Looking into his art we can see that he puts a lot of effort to make them dead like. What I mean by this is that he doesn't make them look perfect, but to place them in a way to give us chills. He really offers this scary like experience within his sculptures and he makes sure to include these messages that can really speak out about his piece. He knows how to make sure to make a real impact.
We see a major theme when it comes to Marina Abramovic and Pawel Althamer, which is the human body. In both of their art work we see them explore the human body but in different ways. They focus on the different part of the body and present it in a way to reach different audiences. It is great to see how they can personally use their imagination to make a big difference in the scenery of a body.
I like Althamer's work more just because I personally love sculptures. I believe that by putting your mind to the test is a great way to express your work. He really goes in depth into his pieces and gives me this chilling feeling. It gave me a really strong sense of the kind of output he wants to give and I love it all.

Week 10 – Artist – Joseph DeLappe & Micol Hebron
Joseph DeLappe is a Uk American artist. His best known pieces explore contemporary issues in politics. He is also known to be a professor of Games and Tactical Media. He has directed the Digital Media and has developed the concept behind "killbox." We can see that his interest in art came from online games, sculptures, and much more. He has created many projects and has won many gaming awards for it. He personally has different medias of art, like digital media and sculpting. We see a lot of diversity and creativity within his art because he is very opened. He is very modern, for he does use a lot of digital acts within his artwork.
Micol Hebron is an American interdisciplinary artist, who likes to focus of feminist activism within her art. Within her art includes writing, social media, crowdsourcing and more. She doesn't only do individual projects, but collabs with others. She is also a professor of art at Chapman University. We know that she takes an interest in video art and new media. She uses lot of variables within her art and really makes her art big. By this, we know that she really cares about the sizing of the way her art is portrayed, especially as she focuses on the human body a lot.
We see both of these artist use a large platform within social media. They both want to reach out to people to be able to express their art as a true importance. They like to focus on very important issues and know that by reaching out on social media, they are reaching a larger spread of audience. Instead of placing their work within a museum, they place it on the internet for everyone to view. Like Joseph, he is really into gaming and that reaches a whole new level of people. I think they choose these medias to be understood by more.
When researching up both these artists, they are really known for their technology use. They both are great at conveying art through technology. If you want to look within their art, we do see them looking into politics a lot, as both of their art can lead back to politics. I think that even though both have a great use of technology, they should be showcasing it to a lot of the millennials. The best way for them to do this is by using the social media platforms that the kids use. I think this will give them a bigger audience and allow for them to reach a new level of people.

Week 10 – Art Activity – Intermedia
My medias were clay, painting, photo collages, and graffiti.
I chose photo collage as my media because it represents my summer. The point of my piece this week was to talk about how my summer went through photos. It brings it all to life. I feel that I wouldn't have been able to do this with the other medias because it wasn't as fascinating as multiple pictures that fully depict my experiences.
Tumblr media
I think I did a great job because I captured my favorite moments in summer. In the top left we see me doing a photoshoot, which is something i love. at the bottom left I am at the fair with my boyfriend, plus watching a hula performance. This was amazing because I am a dancer. I also saw a concert as you can see on the top right. My brother also had a baby! YAYYY!! I made her cry and thought it was a moment to capture. I went paddle boarding which is my favorite summer activity. My family also went on one trip and it was camping. The picture really captured how we felt. I also inputted me eating my acai bowl I got from work. This was the best way to really summon up how my summer went. This collage was a great choice because it showed not just one piece of art, but multiple.

Week 8 - Artist - Addario-Cardiff-Miller
Lynsey Addario is an American photojournalist. She is a very important women figure as she focuses on human rights issues and conflicts. Her work in found in The New York Times, National Geographic, and Time Magazine. She travels around the world documenting the life and oppression of women. She was really into capturing the life of these people under the Taliban. She has been awarded many times and is a very professional artist. From her work we can see how she focuses on the women all around the world and help them get their stories out.
Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller’s are known for their multimedia sound installations and their audio/video walks. They do their work in British Columbia and have it shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art in many different places. These two individuals came together in college and found love over indoor installations (cinema, theater, radio, etc.) They wanted to create a sensory experience and found many ways to bounce ideas off of one another and this is why they work so well together. They are mostly known for the video/audio walks as it is most of their site work. They like to think of it as method acting and do a great job of it.
Their work is similar because they both life to speak up about something. They know how to let their audience understand what they are trying to describe. Both of these people know how to make sure to include something real within their work. It is great because they know how to talk about issues that are very important. I like how when they talk about something it really makes you change your view point and really think about what they are coming across. They both know how to keep it real.
I would say they focus on different things and that is what pulls them apart from one another. Addario makes sure to capture photos of these women in real time and tell their stories. This makes it so authentic and not fictional. With Cardiff and Miller, we get to view their take on things is one short audio or video, but then we need to push back on what is really going on. This is something that we can only view from them in that moment.
I want to say the real world stories are more important just because it is real. By actually learning and understanding what is happening in other countries, we are being more aware of how the world works. I think by having more people see her journey, it gathers more to do the same. I would say whimsical mind exploration fulfill some deep human need because it helps people forget about the world around them. They actually have a way to escape from the world they don't like nor want and get seconds of something better. It is amusing, but to me I see it as something deeper than that. It means a lot more to feel connected to something needed.
If I picked up a camera and a microphone, I would pursue a career like Addario. I say this because she travels around the world to understand people. She likes to sympathize with these people and make a difference. You can always make imaginary videos, but people will always have to face reality in the end. It is important to face reality and that is what Addario brings to the table.

Tumblr media
This is Lani in her teardrop floating bed! She loves how soft the cushion inside is and sleeps in here at night.
Tumblr media
Here is Lani eating food out of my hand. She doesn't like eating from a bowl and only accepts it from a hand.

Week 7 - Artist - Nan Goldin & Annie Leibovitz
Annie Leibovitz is an American portrait photographer. She is mostly known for capturing celebrity portraits within an intimate setting, along with poses. Her work captures a lot of personality and also reflects so much about intimacy. She is very well-known being a part of Rolling Stone, then Vanity Fair and sometimes Vogue. She is the first woman to have a solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, which is very amazing. Her at work seems so simple, yet do detailed. She did dab a little in the painting industry, but loved photography. She likes to make sure her photos fully grasp the loving spirit and brightness of a person. She ranges in her photos by shooting people's nudes, them in gowns, or in paint. Her makes sure that her lighting is also dramatic.
Nan Goldin is an American photographer and activist. She is also likes to capture intimate photos. She also ranges within what she likes to capture, from the LGBT subcultures, to the opioid epidemic. Having a very rough childhood, she found love with a camera. She first started off by focusing on capturing the moments of people she loved. She also saw that the camera is a great way to reach into the political world. She uses her photographs to capture a lot of important ideas. She uses her photographs to also show her own transition within life and the work she has done while traveling. Within her work, you will also see a lot of it being presented as slideshows. The themes that we see from her is love, gender, domesticity, and sexuality.
Tumblr media
This photograph is from Nan Goldin. This photo looks like its capturing a stressful day for a couple. From here we can see love and loss. From the guy doing drugs, we can see that he may be lost and maybe just drained. The girl looking over at him has passionate love for the man, but seems to wonder what he is doing with himself. It is a favorite because I feel like I have been stuck in a position where I really wonder about my days. They can be so long and dreadful, that you just want to let go and relax. I personally don't do drugs, but I feel like I can understand this guy's feelings. I also feel like the girl loving this boy is me because sometimes i just mesmerize over my boyfriend. I like to look at him and think about life.
Tumblr media
This photograph by Annie Leibovitz shows great intimacy. I really like how it captures a man vulnerable and loving someone in a full passionate form. It is very uncommon to see a man wrapped around a lady because we usually depict it to be the other way around. When looking at this we can see how he hold her and kisses her in full loving force. It is a favorite to me because it makes me feel like a man doesn't always have to be seen as strong. I love seeing men show so much love and compassion for their significant other, and not pretending like it is unmanly. I want to feel like the girl because I want a man to feel like it is okay to be all lovey dovey. I want the guy to feel safe with me and not just the other way around.
I wouldn't say one is more authentic or honest because they both capture raw moments. These moments define the intimacy brought into the photo and really capture a true scene. I do not think it matters because they are also creative in their own way. They each know how to speak to a person and really grab someone's attention. Even though they show different pieces, they both represent love and passion. They both speak for the same crowd in my opinion.
I would personally choose Annie Leibovitz because I like the way she uses her lighting. I think she knows how to really focus on one part she wants you to. I think she could really capture all my features. I think Nan Goldin can as well, I just would feel like Annie knows how to understand what I want from a picture. Her work gave me great vibes and every single photo I saw from her really made me interested. It was from her that I struggled with choosing a favorite.

Week 6 - Artist - Camille & Sarah Elgart
Sarah Elgart is an award winning choreographer. She is very good at working in stage, film, and etc. as she is an amazing director and producer. She is mostly known for her dance films and productions. From reading about her. She seems to like to connect the old with the new, really grasping people to the magic out of her work. She likes to work a lot within a community and really grasp some extensive scenarios for her dances.
Camille Dalmais is a French singer and artist. A lot of her music influence is of ‘60s folk and ‘70s soul. She has also won many awards for her songs and great albums. Within her music, every sound is coming from her and her group. A weird fact about her is that she will actually try to feel the vibrations of her music through her feet. This shows a lot of about who she is as a person and how deeply she connects to it.
I can find flow within both of their works. When watching the choreography and music, I was moving my head in a soft motion and vining. It made me feel soft and calm. This is why I really like how they show flow within their art. I would saw I noticed Camille I’m the zone as she strung out lyrics and really softened her voice at times because it made it sound very powerful. It was as if she was really getting into playing those parts out. For Sarah I want to say I noticed her in the down more towards the beginning as she maybe tries to grasp our attentions. Her being in the zone made me want to be in the zone with her almost. I saw more flow than zone though from both of these amazing females. I want to say they are similar in making their work look smooth and effortless. It just both goes with the flow and makes you want to sway to the music and dance.
With my automatic drawing I want to relate back to what I said above. With these two girls, I feel like they both just went where they were supposed to. They stayed within these lines (the paper), but just made every possible way to get all around it (the lines). It was effortless like them, but it showed meaning. They have a connection to what they do and for me with the automatic drawing, I felt something from mine. It made me really think and get something out of it, just like them.

Week 6 - Art Activity - Drawing II
I forgot the entire lower part of the campus!!! Since I have only been a freshman and had most classes online, it was really hard to make a map of the campus. It seems I only know the buildings based on the route I take to walk to my science courses and to the library. Everything else around me is usually unfamiliar and I never know exactly what building it for what. This was really hard for me because I expected myself to know more. I was kind of sad to see that I didn’t really know my school that well. I also only ever take the same route within my classes, so I can’t describe building that greatly either. However I enjoyed challenging my mind. I found myself getting happy when remembering something. I loved this experience as it made me really focus.
Tumblr media
Automatic drawing was a bit difficult. I found myself doing the same motions without even realizing it. My mind was just wandering and I kind of just let my feelings do the work. Letting it flow made me very curious to know what the outcome was gonna be. It felt very weird to me because I let everything be unexpected and things like that scare me! I was super surprised by the power of it because after I saw the creation I was amazed. I thought it was going to turn out so horrible, but it reminded me of something. I was really happy at the way it made me feel childlike. This because I felt like it kind of gave me a Micky Mouse vibe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the automatic drawing I felt a flow, but I definitely felt in the zone for the map. This allowed our minds to just be free and really let our mind loosen up. I felt that this kind of art made me expand my mind how I’m not use to. Trying new things really has allowed me to express myself and view things differently based on my art. Drawing allows us to really view things from a different perspective and grab things from it we never would of expected. I’m glad that I got a feeling from my art because it makes me feel like I’m really connecting.

Wk 5 - Artists OTW - Lady Pink
Lady Pink is a very famous street artists. She stands out because more men design on the street than women and is capable of competing against them. Being an Ecuadorian-American graffiti and mural artists, she has created many masterpieces. She first started off doing graffiti in subway trains, which later led her to being famous in the hip-hop subculture. She started off her career very young, dating back to her high school years. Here she was already exhibiting paintings and many of her famous work is placed in museums. Her work is very unique and extraordinary. Of course Lady Pink is not her real name, but she got it from her love of historical romances.
Jennifer Saville is a contemporary British painter. She is part of the Young British Artists and is very known for her large-scale painted depictions of nude women. She transcends the boundaries of both classical figuration and modern abstraction. Her medium consists of a lot of oil paint and always challenges herself. Her work includes a lot of awareness to the body and the representation of bodies through different cultures. A lot of her pieces are placed in numerous art galleries.
Both of these women are daring in their work and makes sure to express themselves through their pieces. They seem to each focus on what they particularly love, which shows how much they put their heart and soul in each masterpiece. With Lady Pink, we see her use a lot of bright and crazy colors. She doesn't have a color range, as she makes sure to use as many colors in her pieces. With Jennifer, we see her use the same color palette, which consist of warm and earth tones. Lady Pink makes sure to include words in some of her artwork. She also includes so many different things in some of her pieces that it will take you awhile to fully see everything in one piece. With Jennifer, she likes to create only one thing in her frames, which helps us to see the calmness within her pieces, while Lady Pink is more bold.
In my opinion, the strength of an art gallery would be that they will stay there for a long time and be a part of history. The most famous artists in the world have their masterpieces in the galleries. The weakness of an art gallery is that people have to pay to see the beautiful pieces. It is sad that in order to view art and be able to recognize amazing work that you need to pay. The lighting in the museum is also a really great pro because it is made specifically for that type of artwork. The street arts strength is that your medium can be as big or small as you want. It also allows other to view it as you are creating your work. It is amazing to see first hand the work artists do, and street art gives people that opportunity. It is also always free to view this art and is placed in so many different places, which is cool. The con of it would be that you only get natural light to see it at its finest moments and you can't work on it when it is too dark at night.
If I had to choose one over the other I would pick street art. I say this because it is cool to see many individuals artwork being placed within a community. In my own community, I have seen some amazing pieces of street art and always think about it. I never have to drive to a museum to look at it because it is right in my own neighborhood.

Wk 5 - Art Activity - Graffiti Painting
I really loved this project and think that it was such a fun experience. I have never used spray paint before, so it was cool to finally try something new. I was really hoping to go to the meet-up, but sadly I have a surgery and need a lot of rest time. My experience however was good enough! It was awesome to see how the spray paint can change in size based on how you hold it. It almost seems like everything plays a role when wanting some specific type of paint work. I would love to do this again and especially on a wall. I feel like doing it on the ground was kind of hard and I would love to do it differently next time.

Week 4 - Artists OTW - Tom Sachs & Johanna Fateman
Tumblr media
Above is Tom Sachs, an American contemporary artist, who is known for his work in recreating modern icons. All of his masterpieces are of engineering and design, which is really cool! He is known to be a very innovative designer. Based on many descriptions, he uses many daily items to create his artwork and makes sure to recreate things that many people still love today. He makes sure that you can see the work he did that led up to the displayed one. This shows how he likes to let his audience see his process in creating his master pieces. His work is known to never hide any scratches or hide marks and can always be redesigned and improved. Tom has been making zines ever since high school and has a couple famous ones like the Ten Bullets and Mars Rocket Report.
I personally like his work and believe them to be very fascinating. Looking him up, I spent a good amount of time just scrolling through his artwork. I like how it focuses on a lot of modern icons because to me I like looking at things familiar. It is also amazing to me that he would like to keep his entire process up and make sure his audience sees the entire project for how it was created and not just a finished project.
Tumblr media
Johanna Fateman is known for many things like being a musician, songwriter, record producer, and writer. From the picture above, we can already get her punk rock vibe! She is a member of the post-punk rock band le Tigre. She is also known for founding the band MEN, along with a former bandmate. Her writing career started off by producing zines. Some include My Need To Speak on the Subject of Jackson Pollock and The Opposite. It was through zines that she got to meet her future bandmate Kathleen, which is cool because it brought her into the music industry. She was a very freely outspoken person who would say anything that came to her mind. She is well known for her fanzines Snarla that was written by Miranda July as well. It reached out to many other women who had her vibes and Johanna continued to make work that represented jus that. I personally don't have a liking to her work, just because her vibe is different from mine. I do think her work is amazing though, but isn't something I would personally want to look into. I think she is very iconic though and reaches out to a lot of the punk rock fans!

Week 4 - Art Activity - Zines
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My zine is about my weekend camping! I had a crazy week at the river going tubing and falling in the water! I am currently camping and tried my best to use the resources around me to create my zine. Sadly my art work isn't the best, but I think it really captured a funny moment of my week. I think it is super cool because I was able to capture what happened to me today! What made my zine not work so much is the limitations I had with colors and a pen! If I were to do it differently, I would make sure that I bring all the materials with me next time I have a trip. I would like to make more zines about my life because I like recreating scenes that have happened to me in my life. I think it is important to keep those memories alive and have these zines to always look back to.

Wk3 - Artists OTW - Gina Czarnecki & Hirotoshi Ito
Gina Czarnecki is a British artist, known for her use with biomedical science. She is one of the first artist to exhibit human bone, tissue, fat, and milk teeth from living. She does is all of course under other’s permission and says she gets her inspiration from her father who survived the concentration camps in Poland. One of her pieces called “Palaces” is actually made from crystal resin and embedded with milk teeth. She got them all donated from children, who told her stories about how they lost their teeth. She even once stated that she is all about interweaving the work of science and magic and overall possibilities. Her teeth sculpture is all about the potential of growth and progress, which is what she is all for.
Tumblr media
Hirotoshi Ito is a Japanese contemporary artist. He mainly focuses on stone work and adds some really cool features to his pieces.  His pieces almost feels alive, which is really interesting and unlike most. By using marble or granite, he initially alters their character by creating these illusions. He has a set of teeth in his piece called the “Laughing Stone,” which has created this surreal face to it. He also has this zipper around the mouth that really gets us to think about the piece and what it is trying to tell us. It is also very personal pieces in my opinion because he uses the stones that he finds in the nearby beaches and rivers close to home.
Tumblr media
Both of these artists are very spontaneous when it comes to their mediums. Both have used teeth in their artwork to resemble their artwork to be alive! Gina used milk teeth to help give off the feeling of growth and life. Hirotoshi used his to let his audience think about life and change. They both know how to work their way around materials. One difference though is that Hirotoshi stays using stone as his main piece, while Gina explores a lot more with different mediums. Overall, they both show their work in astonishing ways.

Week 2 - Artist - Leite & Donovan
Juliana Cerqueira Leite is a Brazilian sculptor, who went to Chelsea College of Arts and Slade School of Fine Art. She is well-known for creating large scale works that focus on the inner bodies of a human. It is amazing because she will include pieces of just a body, or with pieces of the body missing. It feels as if there is no identity to these bodies, which causes us to really think deeply about her pieces. It is said that her work's inspiration comes from ancient cultures and events. She is a very driven sculptor and uses her own body as her primary tool. With all her energy and force, she creates these beautiful sculptures to create organic forms with clay, plaster, and latex. Juliana is known for using so much density and has explained to her audience that it’s because she wants her artwork to show that matter is in as much control as she is. Her work continues to focus on physicality and how we act with the physical world.
Tara Donovan is an American sculptor, who went to Corcoran College of Art and Design and Virginia Commonwealth University. She is well-known for creating large scale installations, sculptures, drawings, and prints. Her work tends to lean towards commercialism, and we see it within her use of products like styrofoam, straws, and scotch tape. Her work gives off atmospheric effects and focuses on the natural worlds (geological and biological forms). Based on her choices of work, I think her choices of material is what catches a lot of her audience's attention. Whatever medium chosen, she knows how to manipulate them and use it to the best of her abilities.
What these two women already have in common is their beautiful large-scale pieces. These art pieces have won 4 awards each. I also wanted to point out how each of these artists has their own color scheme, which stays within the same colors. This shows us how they like to be very neutral in their art. Both of these women have created great detail into their art, especially with the texture. We can see so much detail within all the ridges or smooth spots. Within each artist’s piece, I was forsure following all the details along their sculptures. They both gave me this shivering emotion because it brought so many thoughts to my head. This is great because I get the same feel from both these sculptors.
Tara Donavan would be a model for me if I was to start a career in sculpting. I would say this because I love the mediums she uses and personally for me I think it speaks out a lot. A lot of her materials are recyclable and makes me believe that she is using it for that same reason. She is putting use to the garbage people throw away daily. I would personally want this to be my similarity with her as well as my goal. My focus would be to speak out to people about recycling and using them to not be thrown away in the ocean. I think doing a lot of sea art would also help with the image of protecting our waters. I would hope my art speaks out to people and allows them to make a change in their life and help the environment as well.
