Wow, this is a story all of its own which I hope will be a long preface when the story is finally finished because all the hard work needs to be acknowledged. There will be lots of tears from readers when it's finally finished too. At that time I plan to wait until my partner is out for the day and then just sit down and read the whole story through. I'll have to come up with an excuse for why my face is red and blotchy from crying.

Thanks for continuing with this incredible work.

While I began writing TRLT on 6 April 2019, the first chapter was first made available to readers on AO3 five (yes, five) years ago today: 27 April 2019.

I'm having feelings about this, so bear with me...

The five years I've spent working on this story have brought me a roller coaster of emotions. At times, chapters seem to have written themselves, other times I've been so frustrated with how slowly it took to finish chapters. I've laughed plenty, and cried over the stress I put on myself to finish writing this story. And I go through bouts of anxiety every time that I publish a new chapter to AO3 (fearing I've lost readers, and fearing that no one will continue to read it, etc.). I've been elated, and extremely frustrated with this story, too. I've had giggle fits and laughter - thankfully more times than I've been in tears (I think).

I love Garcy, Garcia, and Lucy, but writing this story has only made me fall in love with them more than any of my favourite televised scenes of Timeless ever could <- TRLT has also made me love Karl, Amy, Emma, Noah, Dave, and Maria more, too. Aw Hell, even Carol and Benjamin (though he wasn't in it for very long) 😊 <- I ended up scraping an entire subplot that would've featured him much more. I did this because I didn't want TRLT to be a long fic <- yeah... I know 🤦‍♂️

And while I've known exactly how this story will end since 2019, I've enjoyed seeing the way the story changed in places that I didn't expect. I have a very rough draft of the final chapter written. I finished it back in 2020 (or maybe early 2021), and there's a part of me that wonders if that final chapter will change once I complete TRLT's penultimate chapter. I'm just going to let the characters determine that for me since they've dictated almost everything else that has happened in this story. Really... Garcia and Lucy took control of TRLT back in 2019. I'm just their conduit 😂

I never intended to work on this story for five years. And I'm certain that if I knew I'd still be writing it in the year 2024, that 2019 me would've left it with an open ending after chapter 3's conclusion, as it was originally supposed to end there - with Garcia and Lucy escaping prison, and driving off together into a future unknown. Together.

But the itch to tell their story was too strong, and here we are five years later, with at least eight chapters to be published before it ends. And I only have five more chapters to write until it's (kinda) done for me <- I'll still need to revise and edit them all before they are on AO3.

For those of you who have been following this story since the very beginning, thank you for sticking with me, and thank you for your support over the years. I appreciate it more than you know.

To those who came to the story later, I'm so grateful that you saw the word count, and still decided to read this monster fic. Thank you for reading TRLT, and leaving your kudos and comments as you go (and in some cases, telling your non-Timeless friends to check it out <- even if just for the sexytimes chapter 😂 <- should I be embarrassed by this? IDK 😂). I appreciate you all so much.

To those of you like me, who only read completed fanfic. And to those of you who have waited patiently these past five years for TRLT to conclude so you can finally read it... my goal is to finish writing TRLT this year.

I originally was aiming to have all remaining chapters on AO3 before 2025, but my life circumstances won't allow me the freedom to do that. So... I'm hoping to get chapters 26-27 on AO3 this year, and then chapters 28-33 on AO3 in 2025. <- I plan on publishing those last six chapters close together (I'm thinking every two weeks) because they're best read in quick succession. I don't want to have several weeks or months in between them 😊 (and you won't either).

I figured I can quickly write rough drafts of chapters 26-33 right now, and then when my time to work on TRLT is severely cut down (this June), I can work on editing.

Once TRLT is completed, I look forward to your comments as you read the conclusion to this story ❤🙏😊 I've been waiting five long years to get to these final chapters, and, well... getting here, it's been one helluva ride so far, amirite? 😂😂😂😂😂

To my editor, @katechaucer, words cannot possibly describe how much I appreciate the editing work you do on TRLT. Whether it's fixing silly typos, fixing strange word order (I blame my knowledge of several languages on that), or helping me decide which scenes or dialogue to keep, rework, or delete, your thoughts and advice are invaluable to this story. Without your support, I would've given up and deleted this story from AO3 years ago. The comments which you sprinkle throughout the chapters as you edit them, always brighten my day. The Road Less Traveled

SUMMARY:

The road less traveled (idiom/phrase) - a choice made in one's life that is unconventional; a choice that leads one in a different direction than most people. More metaphorically, it speaks about the choices we have never experienced.

This story is a reimagining of Timeless season 2.

Garcia Flynn has been locked up in prison for six weeks. With Rittenhouse set on killing him, an unexpected visitor sets forth a new path that Lucy hadn't written about in her journal.

Seriously though, when I finish this story, I fully expect to sob for hours for so many reasons. The ultimate relief of stress, and knowing that after so many years the story is complete. I've become so attached to TRLT and its characters. I've spent thousands of hours working on it over the years (I actually keep track of this with the Boosted app). Most of my non-language learning free time has been spent writing TRLT. It'll be difficult to polish the final sentence, and leave TRLT behind me.

Although, to be honest, TRLT is a story I will reread for years to come. I love it so much ❤ I don't think it'll ever not be a part of me.

Psst... I'll probably go through the story one last time after the final chapter is posted, and give it one last polish - especially that one chapter early on that still bothers me today 😂

There never seems to be enough time to write for me. Not least because of my partner continually interrupting me! It's almost making me want to give up writing which I've just recently started to do again on joining the fandom.

👆 Hours that I spent working on my most recent fics 😲 (I forgot to use the timer when I wrote this year's Valentine's Day fic, that's why it's not there... oops).

TRLT (on AO3), and Tabula Rasa (not yet on AO3) are still in progress.

And... last night, I got TRLT chapter 27 to a draft that's ready for my editor once she finishes edits on chapter 26 💃

I'm writing scenes in TRLT that take place in downtown San Antonio, and I'm missing that city so much right now.

This 👇 is the Emily Morgan Hotel. I think it's one of the coolest looking buildings in San Antonio. In the photo, you can walk to the Alamo by turning right at that corner.

👇 The most haunted hotel in Texas: The Menger Hotel. I once ate lunch here, and the building's exterior says nothing about how gorgeous this place is on the inside ❤ If I didn't have friends in San Antonio, I'd probably want to stay at least one night in this place <- hopefully get a ghostly experience, or close the night out in the Menger Bar where it's said the ghost of Teddy Roosevelt frequents 😱

👇 if I wanted a quick in and out of downtown, I parked here because it's right next to I-35, and I'd be home in under 30 minutes (well... depending on traffic on 35/281/1604 😂😂😂😂🤦‍♂️).

👆 And it's still within walking distance of Alamo Plaza and the Riverwalk.

Ugh. I am really missing San Antonio so much. It's my favourite city and downtown in the United States ❤ The last time I was there was in February 2020, a few weeks before covid lockdown.

So... I almost completely distracted myself from working on TRLT tonight by going through reader comments from years ago. Then, I found myself wanting to reply to comments that I didn't comment on, but stopped myself because I thought: those readers probably forgot about my story and/or wouldn't want to get an email alert in their inbox for a comment they made waaaaay back in 2019.

Then I thought about how getting a comment back from an author on a fic that I read years ago would be awesome because maybe I forgot about their story, and getting a reply from them would probably get me to reread it (and leave new comments bc I comment on every fic that I read <- and frequently even on the fics I reread).

So, what is the fanfic community etiquette about this?

Should I go through and comment on comments I haven't commented on? Should I not?

How would you feel if a fic author replied to your comments years later?

I'd poll this, but I prefer to read what you have to say 😊
