My best friend just taught me the greatest tarot trick: Is there something in your life that isn’t going your way? Shuffle your cards, sift through them and find the Wheel of Fortune card. The cards found on either side of it are insight into what you need to do to change your circumstances.

50 Tips for Tarot Novices and Masters Alike!
Always make sure your deck is shuffled and cleansed.
There is no one way to shuffle, find what works for you.
Cards that fall out when you’re shuffling may hold extra important meaning.
Learning from books is good, but use your own intuition as well.
Thank your deck after a reading.
Be sure to charge your cards and be nice to them.
Using a cheat sheet or a book is not a bad thing.
Biddytarot is great for learning basic card meanings.
If you don’t have a tarot deck, you can use regular cards or make your own.
Tarot and Oracle are NOT the same thing.
There are a few tarot apps to help you learn (golden threat, galaxy, etc)
Watch for multiple cards from one suit.
Pay attention when a card follows you through multiple readings, it is usually trying to tell you something.
Find the card that matches with your birth-date/you feel a significant connection to. Use it in personal readings to help strengthen them.
Always be sure you’re using a deck that works for you!
Pay attention to the symbolism and art of the cards.
Interview spreads are great for getting to know a new or old deck.
Divination is not specifically witchcraft and is not always tied to it.
Don’t let anyone but you touch your cards unless doing a reading and you want them to touch them- messes with energy.
If someone besides you does touch them, make sure to cleanse.
Decks have different personalities, don’t be bummed if one doesn’t work out for you.
Be prepared for a deck to get sarcastic and give out riddles.
Keep a journal/notebook/google doc of different spreads. You can even organise them by type.
Daily draws are great, but don’t knock yourself if you can’t do them every day.
Meditating before a reading can help gain clarity.
An easy way to cleanse your deck is to put them all in order then shuffle them again.
Flash cards are good to memorise meanings.
Bonding with your deck can help readings be more accurate. An easy way to do this is sleep with them under your pillow.
Cleansing/charging your deck can be as easy as leaving them in a windowsill, or as intricate as a ritual.
You can have as many or as few decks as you want.
Making your own cards does NOT make you less of a diviner.
Readings are not set in stone, take them with a grain of salt.
Reversals are not always bad.
Upright is not always good.
The death card does not mean death.
Keep a journal to record your readings.
Try to remember one keyword/idea for each card to help you learn.
Make sure your deck fits in your hands comfortably.
If you’re just starting out, use simpler spreads.
Past/present/future is great for beginners.
Amethyst is a good stone to have around.
But, letting your deck choose it’s favourite crystal is also important.
Using a tarot cloth can help keep unwanted energy off of your deck, especially if divining in a public place.
Tarot bags are easy to make, just find a drawstring bag tutorial and edit the measurements to fit your deck.
Playing music while doing readings can help you focus.
It’s okay to redo a reading if you don’t feel it’s right, but keep the first one in mind.
If you practice witchcraft, you can use tarot in various spells.
You don’t have to read reversals!
If tarot doesn’t work out for you but you still want to use divination, try other forms such as oracle, scrying, pendulums, cartomancy, and more.
Practice!!!

The Shadow Situations Spread is something I created for myself a little while ago. I couldn’t shake the feeling I was missing something important from my personal divinations and introspection. I created this spread to show not only what I messages I was missing, but what I was willfully ignoring, the stuff I didn’t want to face. This isn’t really a light or easy spread, but as I have used it for myself its been wonderfully enlightening. It also gives good advice.
Anyway:
The special thing about this deck is that you draw cards from the bottom of your deck, rather than the top. Just shuffle your deck like normal, while thinking of the situation or question. When it ‘feels right’ stop and start pulling cards from the bottom of your face-down deck until you have all the cards laid out as pictured.
1)Your Perception of The Situation: aka What you think is going on.
2)What You’re Missing: Pretty self explanatory
3)What You’re Willfully Ignoring: You know this is going on, somewhere, but you just aren’t facing it like you need to.
4)What Your Intuition Is Trying To Tell You: The Answer to ‘oh deer lord I feel like I’m missing something. constantly’
5)What You’re Actually Asking: I have a hard time phrasing my tarot questions to answer the question I really need. Then I did this reading for myself I actually got The Answer and not The Question thankfully.
6)The Reality of The Situation: Not influenced by your biases, this is what is really going on.
7)What Could Make This Situation Worse: aka What not to do.
8)What Could Make The Situation Better: aka What to do.
So yeah! Look at my new spread, the first I’ve ever made from scratch, I hope you like it! Any feedback is welcome and please tag me if you ever post a reading of it, I’d love to see!
If you would like me to do a reading for you check out my shop: Iced Shadows Tarot! I just added a lot of spread options over the last several days.

Get to Know Your Deck Spread
Tumblr media
Here’s a lovely spread for all of you out there who are new to tarot, recently received a new deck, struggle with bonding with your deck(s) and/or are having issues getting clear or understanding readings. Sometimes decks have personalities to them, they have their own likes, dislikes, alignments and even preferred ‘work’ to go into. They also often require bonding to get the most accurate smooth readings. I have explained before the differences in my decks and what they like to answer, and I know of others who struggle bonding or understanding who their decks are. This spread should be of help!
1. How is your deck feeling today? Are they in a good mood ready to work? Or are they just having an off bad day? I have found decks, like people, can have moody bad days. These days their readings may be harsher than usual or even not even slightly logical. Its good to see what mood your deck is in before using it for readings, especially readings for others (and especially if they are paying for them). This may also affect the questions they will wish to answer.
2. What element does your deck align with? All decks are different and some may align themselves with specific elements. Is your deck fire, water, earth, air, spirit or a combination of them? This may affect the manner which they read. Air decks may be more interested in giving creative advice and focus on individuality, free-spirited natures, the arts, and even love. Water decks tend to focus on emotions and seeking gentle fixes. Fire decks tend to be the most assertive, they are competitive, encouraging, brave, passionate but also tend to support the idea of feuds. Fire decks, also from my experience, tend to be very blunt about things. Earth aligned decks tend to be a bit calmer, they focus on bonds with people such as family and friendships. They also focus on careers, prosperity and money matters. Spirit decks, tend to like to do more of the ‘divine’. They focus on self-enlightenment, self discovery and communicating with supernatural forces, guides, and deities.
3. What Questions does your deck enjoy answering? Does your deck enjoy answering questions about love? Friends and family? Do they enjoy giving personal advice? Do they like money matters and career focuses. This could determine what questions they may be the most accurate and ones they will give the best advice on.
4. What Questions does your deck least like to answer? These are the questions they may not have the most accurate advice on. Such as my Rider deck greatly dislikes romance questions so I never use him for them because he will always just advice break-ups no matter the situation.
5. What is your deck’s current feelings towards you? Does your deck feel close to you? Is it a strong professional business bond? Or is it more like a friendship? Do they feel distant from you? Like you ignore them? Do they not understand you or feel like you are a stranger? Do you intimidate them?
6. How can you improve your relationship? How does your deck feel like you two can do to help build your relationship? Practice more or perhaps make spreads.
7. A Negative trait. Pretty self explanatory, this is a negative quality about your deck that it feels you have a right to know about. Take note that this is a negative trait in the mind and views of your deck, its something it feels is negative.
8. A Positive trait. Again, pretty self explanatory, this is a trait that your deck feels is a positive trait it has. Again, this is a trait seen as positive in its mind.

SELF-REFLECTION SPREAD
I mostly use tarot as a tool for personal introspection. Even people who don’t believe in divination of any kind can use tarot as an aid to explore different perspectives to a situation or even their own psyche. These are some things which I believe I need to confront about myself before achieving any real personal growth.
1. FIXATE
What are the parts of yourself or your life that you tend to get hung up about. Confronting yourself can be good, but overly obsessing on a particular problem or aspect of yourself can inhibit growth.
2. IGNORE
Conversely, what do you tend to push to the side. This can go both ways: some are unable to see the good things in themselves or their lives, while others gloss over their faults and avoid addressing their problems.
3. FALSE
What are the things we think to be true about ourselves, or our lives that are not. These are often negative qualities, a lot of people think they are less capable, less deserving or less worthy than they really are.
4. DECIPHER
What about ourselves have we yet to understand. Everyone has some things about themselves which they don’t yet fully grasp or cannot quite put to words.
5. WANT
What do we most want from ourselves and our lives. The things we wish were more true about ourselves or that we aspire to be. This is a long process to achieve, and part of that is learning that we can’t just skip to this step, we need to deal with the other parts of ourselves too, including the undesirable parts, before we can achieve true personal growth.
Note: Tarot is not a substitute for professional counselling and other forms of licensed therapy! Feel free to use it as a complimentary practice (unless otherwise advised), but do not rely on it as your sole means of treatment if you believe you need professional counselling.

Tarot spread for when you’re feeling frustrated and blocked. When there’s something wrong but you can’t quite figure what that is.
The cork, what’s keeping card five trapped.
What you need to keep an eye out for, the negative repercussions that this reveal will give you
The positives that will come from this being let into the light
What you should do to work on the negatives of card two, how to move further through them.
The central issue, the thing that needs to be let out into the light
How the positives found in card three will inform and shape and improve your life.
This spread actually helps me a lot with shadow work - if I keep running up against an emotion I can’t figure out the reason for, I work on this, but it also helps when I’m feeling stifled.

I made a super quick and simple tarot spread based on taking things “one day at a time”, for those of us who are feeling overwhelmed by a situation. This spread is designed to give fast advice on the day you’re reading for in a non-cluttered way. Hope this helps! I’d love to see people using this so feel free to tag me if you do! :)
Card One- Today’s Challenge: This card is basically self-explanatory. Pull a card to give you a hint about a problem or challenge you may face today.
Card Two- Solution to Problems that may Arise Today: This is the advice card. Pull a card to give you an idea of how to go about solving whatever comes up today. For example, pulling the Queen of Swords could indicate that you need to handle today’s issues with logic and controlled temper, and leave emotions out of it.

This is my little twist on your typical deck interview spread - it’s how I like to conceptualize meeting a deck [spirit]. It can be used to get to know a new deck, or even to get reacquainted with one you’ve had but haven’t spent much time with.
