Week 12 – Artist – Abramovic-Althamer
Marina Abramovic is a Serbian conceptual and performance artist. Her work explores body art, endurance art, feminist art, the relationship between the performer and audience. She has been doing art for over 4 decades to the point that she calls herself the “grandmother of performance art.” Abramovic’s art consists of using the human body and different movements to paint a story. On the other hand, Pawel Althamer is a contemporary Polish sculptor, performer, collaborative artist and creator of installations and video art. A lot of his art consists of sculptures which have the base of the human body. In Abramovic’s art, there’s a limit to what she can do with the human body, since it is a lot more difficult to modify the human body to look a certain way. Meanwhile, Althamer is able to create art by sculpting. I believe that Abramovic’s art displays a lot of emotions, since it is a person to person connection. In Althamer’s art, it feels like I’m from a different universe and it is something that I could find as an NFT.

Week 12 – Public Art
The performing art that I chose was a little sparring match between my friend Nick(black shirt) and Vincent (white shirt). Nick has been training muay thai for about a year now, while Vincent has 5 years of Karate experience. Unfortunately Vincent has stopped doing karate for about a year or two now, so he is a bit rusty.
The concept of this sparring match was to demonstrate the difference between two different martial arts in combat. Unfortunately, Vincent doesn't have a mouth guard, nor does he have shin guards, so they were only using 5% power. Clearly, Vincent lacks a lot of experience in punching combination, since most of his combat is from kicking. Meanwhile, Nick is capable of throwing both punches and kicks. In this sparring video, Nick is a lot more skilled as seen in his mobility and head movement.
The sparring match went to plan, with the exception of it not be as entertaining as I thought. Vincent hasn't done any sort of combat in almost 2 years, so he wanted to test out how much skill he still had. To my surprise, Nick has learned a lot from almost one year of learning muay thai. I was able to execute this sparring match because Vincent has been wanting to spar someone in order to see where he was at with his combat skills.

Week 11 – Art Activity – Choice
Tumblr media
What is your art project? - This is a model kit that I recently finished building. It took me about 2 days to finish because assembling all of the pieces were very tedious, and I had to wait for the paint to dry. So the car in this picture is a Lancer Evo IX.
What inspired you to do this for a project? - I am interested in modifying cars and JDM cars, so I figured why not build a model kit. The cool thing about this model kit is that I was able to choose what colors I want for each part of the car. I recently bought myself a car, so I am looking forward to modifying that car.
Were there any art techniques that you had to apply to your art project? - In terms of different art techniques, it would be painting and carefully cutting the little pieces. For the paint, I used spray paint, since it is very time efficient and practical in this sense. Majority of the car will be painted this aqua color, so rather than using a paint brush I just did spray paint and then added a layer of clear coat.
How long did it take for you to finish the project? - This project was fun yet tedious, because I pretty much sat at my desk for almost 20hrs. I ended up multitasking as I was building the model kit, which helped time fly. The whole assembling was annoying, because some of the pieces wouldn't fit like how the manual displayed.

Week 11 – Artist – Choice
Questions:
What type of art does your artist do?
What allowed this artist to become famous or popular?
What is your favorite art piece from this artist?
How did you discover this artist?
Do you see yourself making art with a bit of inspiration from this artist?
Artists: Takashi Murakami and Brian Donnelly
Takashi Murakami is a Japanese contemporary artist. He works in fine arts media as well as commercial and is known for blurring the line between high and low arts as well as aesthetic characteristics. His artworks consist of sculptures and paintings, which can also be found on apparel. Takashi was famous for his unique style of combining cartoon and anime into his own form of art. His iconic art piece includes a flower with various colors in the flower petals. My favorite art piece from this artist is in fact his iconic flower with multiple flowers in the petals. I first discovered Takashi from his clothes, because it is also known to be a “Hypebeast Brand.” I do see myself making art like Takashi’s style. I like the blend of cartoon art with a sophisticated form of art.
Brian Donnelly is an American artist and designer who is known for his brand Kaws. His work includes repeated use of a cast of figurative characters and motifs, some dating back to the beginning of his career in the 1990s, initially painted in 2D later found in 3D. Donnelly first gained his popularity from his recognizable television and animation icons including characters in The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, the Michelin Man, the Smurfs, as well as SpongeBob Squarepants. My  favorite art piece from this artist is the metallic kaws figure covering his face. I believe that this is a cool collectible that is simple yet iconic for those who are familiar with Kaws or just hypebeast collectibles. I discovered this artist from a friend of mine who owned apparel from Donnelly. Kaws is a brand that is simple and subtle, yet iconic. I do see myself making art similar to Brian Donnelly, since his art has one main focus with a slight change for every different art piece. For instance, one Kaws figure could be standing up straight, while another is cross armed.

Week 10 – Art Activity – Intermedia
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this project, I decided to execute my intermedia idea using clay. I wanted to create something that says summer and joy. There isn't anything specific in the media that I wanted to portray, so I went with something related to the season. In terms of execution, I am satisfied with the finishing product. I got a bit of inspiration from my sister to make a heart with strawberries painted, rather than just doing a strawberry. My little sister wanted to join, so she is currently working on a flower. The finishing product definitely conveys the idea I wanted, because it could be symbolic of summer vibes.

Week 10 – Artist – Joseph DeLappe & Micol Hebron
Joseph DeLappe is an artist well known in the United Kingdom and is best known for his art intervention pieces that explore contemporary issues in politics through new media installations and interactive gaming performances. His art work varies from paintings to sculptures which depicts what is going on in pop culture and media. Micol Hebron is an American interdisciplinary artist whose practice includes studio work, curating, writing, social media, crowd-sorucing, teaching, public speaking, and both individual and collaborative projects. A few of her art pieces pertain to and draw inspiration from nudity or more so the human body. The different media that DeLappe and Hebron use are Twitter, Instagram, Facebook. They also use their own media sites, along with media sites specifically for artists and the community that they are a part of. They choose the media depending on the website’s guidelines or rules. Since Hebron has artwork that includes nudity, she isn’t able to post her artwork on Instagram, but she can do so on Twitter. So based on the content and audience that the artists are trying to attract, they will use a specific website. One media that I didn’t really think they would use was their own website. They use their own website as a portfolio and a way to present themselves to the public eye in an organized manner. I do see similarity in a sense that they both explore the concepts that are popular in media. DeLappe uses more of the meme and popculture side, whereas Hebron uses more of an activist or social problem side. A media that DeLappe or Hebron have not used could be tiktok or even reddit. Both of these social media pages or forums are a great way to attract an audience specific to their art works.

Week 8 – Art Activity – Photo Story
Tumblr media
Every morning from Monday-Thursday, I wake up at 8am to get ready for my physics class. Yes, I am taking a 6 week physics session at CSULB, which is going miserably.
Tumblr media
Every morning, I would eat a little bit of breakfast. I would try to eat something small so that I don't get a stomach upset during class.
Tumblr media
After I finish my breakfast, I drive to school, which takes me about 20minutes. I am at school from 10-2.
Tumblr media
Once when I come home from school, I would workout for about 1-2 hours. Somedays, I would drive to crunch, while other days I would just do a light workout at home.
Tumblr media
After my workout, I take a shower and eat a little bit of food. It is key for me to eat some sort of protein after I workout to build muscle.
Tumblr media
Once when I finish working out, I would do my homework all the way until I eat dinner.
Tumblr media
After a bit of homework, I get burntout so I play some videogames. I would typically play minecraft or valorant with my friends.
Tumblr media
After a long day, I just knockout.

Week 8 – Artist – Addario-Cardiff-Miller
Lynsey Addario is an American photojournalist who produces most of her work for New York Times, National Geographic, and Time Magazine. The images that she takes are very complex, yet it displays so many different emotions in one image. It is easily identified that all of her images use so many techniques such as lighting, angles, and symmetry. As an audience, I am able to easily identify the main subject in each photo and dissect what is going on in the picture.
Janet Cardiff and George Bures are a duo artist who work together to produce a piece of art using sound. Typically, they would find some sight seeing location and they would install a sound board at various locations, along with a slow-motion film. While an observer is taking a tour around a sight seeing location, they will also be able to experience little snippets of the place at different stations. The snippets or short slow motion film will give information about the object being observed, along with a bit of audio.
Addario and Cardiff-Miller’s works are similar in the aspect of visuals. Both of their works include visuals that paint a story and provide so much information for the audience. Addario’s pictures are a key component to giving the viewer an understanding of what they are reading in the news. The visual will support what the viewer is reading in the news. Meanwhile, Cardiff-Miller uses slow-motion pictures to help guide people with the background audio. The use of pictures and audio complements each other, giving the viewer a full experience.
The difference between Addario and Cardiff-Miller’s work is how their work is being perceived. Addario’s pictures are usually seen on news articles, which paints a picture for the description and story being followed. Cardiff-Miller’s work involves the person moving around an open space, which includes little stations with slow-motion video and audio. Not to mention, Cardiff-Miller uses many pictures to create one whole story, while Addario just needs one picture to paint her story. Cardiff-Miller’s work requires many components to have one finished product.
Cardiff-Miller’s work is definitely a lot more fun, while Addario’s work is a lot more serious. Both are merely amusing, since the media is all about finding ways to get more clicks and viewers. Pictures being used in news articles can sometimes be misleading, since pictures are what usually capture the audience’s initial attention. Both of these artists’ works have some sort of importance to the world, since they both tell a story in different aspects. Addario’s pictures are definitely more on the serious side, since it gives the audience an insight of what is happening around the world and it shows us the reality of what we may not see. Cardiff-Miller’s work is made for entertainment, but it can also teach the audience a few things.
If I had to choose one method of storytelling, I would choose Addario’s style. I like how Addario’s one picture can have so many different interpretations and stories that can be told. One image is all it takes to tell a story. I find it very impressive how one image can contain so many words that can be told and shared to the world.

Week 7 – Artist – Nan Goldin & Annie Leibovitz
Annie Leibovitz is a photographer, specifically a portrait photographer. She is best known for her portrait pictures which were taken in the moment. For every picture, we are able to identify what the person in the image is going through based on their facial expression or in the one frame of movement. She would usually take the image when the person is doing some sort of action, rather than when the person is standing still. Nan Goldin on the other hand also presents her work of art through photography, but rather in a different field of photography. Her goal is to demonstrate images that correlate to the LGBTQ+ subcultures, moments of intimacy and crisis. In other words, her pictures often explore the LGBTQ+ world and give the audience an insight of what it would look like for someone who is in the community.
Tumblr media
This image was taken by Annie Leibovitz of Tennessee Williams and Maria Just. This image just looks like a lot of fun based on the scenery and how the man and the woman look. The people in the image are looking at something, probably something in the distance, and they are having the time of their lives. Just by looking at this image, it gives me a very happy and positive vibe that makes me want to go hang out with them. Although there isn’t anything fancy about the picture, it definitely speaks to the audience and draws the audience’s attention to the mood of the image.
Tumblr media
This image was taken by Nan Goldin and it is called Trixie on the Cot. I chose this image because it just looks like something people can relate to. I personally don’t get wasted, but from the looks of this image, the female in the picture is drunk and just completely done from drinking. She looks like a complete mess and I can see a lot of people relating to this image at their first college party. Everything about the image just makes it work so well, such as the lighting to the setting to the woman’s pose.
In terms of the difference, the only thing that I can think of would be the message or the meaning being portrayed from the images. Both photographers have their own different goals of sharing the type of content specific to their appeal. Besides the meaning behind the photographs, I think that their styles are fairly close and similar. All of their pictures are when people are just living in the moment and living life. The pictures weren’t planned per say, but rather taken at a random point in time, allowing the picture to have a raw and authentic feeling.
If I had to hire a photographer, I would easily choose Annie Leibovitz. I dig her whole vibe and style of taking pictures. The way she is able to capture moments of people just living life really speaks to me and makes me wish that I took more pictures. She shows how pictures can be a way of showing you moments in life that will be memorable for when you look back at it a few years later. The types of pictures she has doesn’t require any dates or description of what the picture is about, since the picture speaks for itself.

Week 6 – Art Activity – Drawing II
Tumblr media
Well, my first impression is that the two maps differ greatly. From what I've learned, I only drew the buildings that I am familiar with and where I have been. There are a lot more components of the school campus that I am missing, which was expected. Now that I had time to think, I'm able to recall a lot more things about the school campus than what I drew. The only issue is that I have a terrible sense of direction, so I can't draw things in the right position.
Tumblr media
My experience of automatic drawing was weird, but surprisingly relaxing. I thought that I would struggle cooperating with someone else while drawing, but the marker moved really easily. Well other than my drawing being a bunch of lines and scribbles, I am sure people can see the "art" behind it. The mood behind this drawing is very calming and free. There wasn't any guideline or end goal of the result, but rather just to let the marker move on its own. I was certainly in the zone and experienced a flow, since I didn't have a mind of my own. I took a decently sized construction paper and put it on the ground in between me and my sister. Obviously I didn't want the marker to go on my laminate floor, so I had to put a few sheets of paper underneath just for good measures.

Week 6 – Artist – Camille & Sarah Elgart
Sarah Elgart’s work revolves around different dance moves. The content includes various styles of dances and movements to the clothing of the dancers. Each performance has its own unique story to tell and you can tell so by the emotions of the dancers. Her meaning behind each dance is to express emotions through the body’s movements.
Camille Dalmais is a French artist who first signed to a music label back in 2002. Her content is expressed through music, which she would tell stories and emotions by her words. The music genre that she typically sings are pop and rock, which expresses more of an excited emotion.
The flow in the work of Camille and Sarah Elgart is very relaxed and almost like a freestyle technique. As a viewer, I can easily see the moment Sarah Elgart and her dancers are in the zone based on how freely they move their body and by looking at their faces. The dancers that Sarah selects are very interesting and unique as well because she doesn’t only select professional dancers, but anyone who is willinging to be choreographed by her. Meanwhile, I can tell that Camille is in the zone when she hits her high notes and you can just hear the passion from her voice. Not to say that only certain parts of her songs are top notch, but really throughout her whole song is when she is giving it her all.
The connection that I can find is that both artists are relaxed and aren’t too fancy or strict in their own way. They are just presenting their art in their own special ways that make them stand out from others.
In comparison of automatic drawing to the two artists, I can feel the relaxation. It feels like I am meditating and letting my mind flow freely, along with my hand just swaying in whatever direction. There are no guidelines to automatic drawing, which can be seen the same way in Camille’s singing and Sarah’s dancing.

Wk 5 – Bubble Letter Graffiti
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have spray painted before, but I have never spray painted words. This first experience was pretty cool and I wished that I could've done this activity on a bigger canvas. It really isn't hard spray painting bubble letters, but because of my limited space, I had struggled with getting the letters out.

Wk 5 – Artists OTW – Coinslot & Michael Kohn
The first artist I will be talking about is Coinslot. Coinslot is a street artist located in LA and found his popularity through the use of social media. He drew attention from a lot of social media influencers which helped Coinslot gain his popularity. Coinslot would do custom street designs on random objects or platforms such as a backpack, a piano or even a basketball hoop. Most of his work includes some idea of pop culture, but drawn with a twist of his own.
The other artist that I will be discussing is Michael Kohn. Michael Kohn is an artist with his own art gallery in LA. I had to do a bit of research to find out about him and so I am not disappointed that I chose him. His art work is very symbolic and meaningful to the audience. I find that a lot of his art pieces are very sophisticated and contain a lot of different techniques.
Comparing the two artists, Coinslot’s art contains primarily pop culture icons, which can be seen in a few of Michel Kohn’s art works. The big difference that I noticed is that Coinslot has one style of art, while Michael Kohn has many different styles. Street Art is mainly pertains to art seen within popculture and contains a lot of colors to catch someone’s attention when walking in the streets. Gallery art can be seen as something that is very elegant and meaningful. The strength of Gallery art is that it can be much more appreciated, while street art is just something we say “cool.” The weakness of gallery art is that most of the art is displayed within a gallery, which most people won’t go in to see. Street art is within the streets, so people will always see it when they walk around the block. If I were to choose what type of artist I want to be, I would definitely go with street artist. Being a street artist is a lot more interesting, because there are no guidelines to what I can do and I can paint whatever is on my mind.

Week 4 – Art Activity – Zines
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my zine, I was thinking about doing "A day in the life." Clearly I can't draw and I don't have much materials, but I believe that what I have drawn gives a good idea of my life. I tried to represent my daily routine with certain hours of the day. This definitely could've been better if I had more pages that I could draw on, so in my opinion this is probably the best that I could do. The zine worked because it is very straight forward and an easy sequence to follow. What didn't work would be the illustration. Something differently that I would try would probably be to improve on my drawing skills, since I drew basic stick figures and lines. Next time, I would want to do a funny story that happened to me back in middle school.

Week 4 – Artists OTW – Tom Sachs & Johanna Fateman
I recently found out about Tom Sachs from a recently released shoe. Nike did a restock on a “General Purpose Shoe” which is being resold for a ridiculous amount of money above the retail price. From the looks of his art pieces, I think that his core ideas come from iconic items. I have noticed that he has a lot of art pieces involving spaceships and NASA, along with the concept of combining multiple items to have one piece.
In this creation by Tom Sachs titled Nusty’s McDonalds, it appears to be expressed in a very retro feeling. It seems like the material used for the pieces are things you may find at a construction site by the looks of plywood and metal materials. I’m getting a mid 1900s vibe because of how compact, yet open the McDonalds replication is in the open space. There appears to be a station as the main attraction and also a place for people to order their food. I think what Tom Sach is trying to say that no matter how a constructed figure looks, if there’s an iconic symbol then people will enjoy it. This piece of art speaks to me in a way of demonstrating a different view of potentially a whole nother dimension. It does somewhat strike a chord with me because I am very familiar with the large franchise McDonalds, along with the fact that I have seen a retro world.
Going on to the next artist, Johanna Fateman is a writer, art critic, and a co-owner of Seagull Salon in NY. From the looks of her artwork, I believe that she draws inspiration from society. There isn’t really much background information about her or a designated website, so I had to base off my review from her art gallery. So from the art pieces being displayed in her art gallery, the concepts and styles seem to be very abstract.
Tumblr media
In this painting, it appears that there’s a large group of people standing around a coffin. Everyone is wearing some sort of colorful clothing, except for one person who is wearing a white t-shirt, which allows them to stand out in the crowd. The difference in color could be a way of demonstrating the person’s status amongst the group of people. The way I am interpreting this painting is that people are mourning for someone who made a big impact in a community. It is very similar to how people have a lot of respect for Martin Luther King jr. I could relate to this painting, since if someone truly speaks to me and has an impact on my life, I would surely attend events to pay my respect.
Zines in these two pieces of art could be seen in different ways. The way I see zines is that it is a small magazine that tells a story. In Tom Sachs’s art, each part of the art could be amplified and have a backstory. The same goes with Johnana Fateman’s art, certain pages can zoom in to people’s facial expression and their relation to the person that has passed away.

Wk 3 – Art & My Major
Tumblr media
For this project I decided to utilize wires and resistors to make some sort of art. As much as I want to make it look good, I am very limited to what I have at home. The only materials I have are a few colored wires and some resistors. I was hoping to make a cool looking picture with the use of more colored wires and even some LEDs. I wouldn't say that the project requires more than a week, but rather just needs more materials. The problem I would have is finding a power supply. If I really wanted to make a proper face, I would have to make sure that the wires are connected properly. This means I would have to do a bit of calculations to see whether or not the wires are parallel or in series to identify the amount of current is going through each wire. I believe that my major could definitely be enhanced with art, since there is a very artistic and creative view in engineering. Based on the two lower division major courses I have taken, I can see how art could be incorporated. I have seen students in upper division engineering courses do some crazy bread board wiring, and the breadboard can get pretty hectic. With more time and more thought being used when assembling the breadboard, there could be a more aesthetically pleasing masterpiece. Although, I do understand that doing circuitry is all about being efficient, so making the project look colorful isn't a factor.
