all my advice about using real athletes to learn drawing bodies beyond hard abs, and my particular pref being wrestlers, also applies to women btw. you can draw women who r strong and not an hourglass shape. fucking do it.

kris statlander, rhea ripley (look at her SHAPE), willow nightingale, ruby soho, these r just four off the top of my head that have obvious musculature and different body types. skye blue and julia hart have more slim cheerleader style bodies as well, i REALLY wanted to put emi sakura who is fucking STOUT (adoring) in this post but i couldn't find a good demonstrative pic, the list goes on
DRAW DIFFERENT BODIESSSSSSSS

weekly fun stuff: starting to figure out the horizon line edition
Currently in the process of making a really big breakthrough with perspective and I am actually seeing it become more intuitive, which is HUGE even though the end result probably doesn't look any different from usual. Everything is still falling apart when I try to progress from sketches though and I really don't know how to practice this apart from spending hours trying and failing to ink... surely there is a less time-consuming and smarter way?
Things I'm having trouble with going from sketch to... more finished sketch: angle between shoulders and ribcage (vertical), accidentally switching weightbearing leg due to (again accidentally) changing pelvic tilt and making the whole pose look unnatural, faces in general (found out that ear placement is something I mess up a lot, though, and that it has a big impact on how correct a face looks - also need to continuously check that eyes are the same size and correctly spaced and that the features in general aren't too big for the head), proportions (mainly not making enough space for the pelvis and sometimes elongating the waist), perspective on legs (need to keep in mind that the femur is actually a diagonal and starts pushed out about halfway down the pelvis). I've spent a lot of time redrawing hands this week and it has actually helped, as has looking up specific items of clothing to see how they fold when worn.
Drawing is frustrating at the moment, but I believe in my ability to learn.

weekly fun stuff: focussed edition
Been re-iterating on stuff a lot this week. It's annoying to keep drawing something almost fully and then have to redo it all, but it'll turn out higher quality in the end and it gets me a lot of very specific mileage with perspective and rotating things. I'm already noticing an improvement in my understanding of hand articulation.
My goal this week is to draw one 25min sketch (from ref) of two people interacting every day. I decided this on Friday, so the three sketches at the bottom are my results so far - mostly wanting to practice perspective and applying a consistent horizon line, so they're all kind of disproportionate (and that's okay). Multiple people and form intersections are the way to greatness!
I also started doing 15min videos of 3min hand poses from this channel yesterday, but this might end up as not a daily thing because I have no attention span and 40min of just studies (hands + two people) feels like it might be pushing it. I guess we'll see.

weekly fun stuff
Keeping up with the news is understandably affecting my ability to concentrate a lot.
Was recommended a 3D model hand reference viewer (thank you!) so I think I'm going to try drawing the same pose in different rotations.
Still having a lot of trouble going from a loose sketch (which is what I've inked over in all of these) to something tighter and actually correct in the sketch phase. It definitely does give a better result in the end so it is something I would like to improve at.

If your plot feels flat, STUDY it! Your story might be lacking...
Stakes - What would happen if the protagonist failed? Would it really be such a bad thing if it happened?
Thematic relevance - Do the events of the story speak to a greater emotional or moral message? Is the conflict resolved in a way that befits the theme?
Urgency - How much time does the protagonist have to complete their goal? Are there multiple factors complicating the situation?
Drive - What motivates the protagonist? Are they an active player in the story, or are they repeatedly getting pushed around by external forces? Could you swap them out for a different character with no impact on the plot? On the flip side, do the other characters have sensible motivations of their own?
Yield - Is there foreshadowing? Do the protagonist's choices have unforeseen consequences down the road? Do they use knowledge or clues from the beginning, to help them in the end? Do they learn things about the other characters that weren't immediately obvious?

weekly fun stuff: been a while edition
Need to practice pelvises in non-standing poses, preferably with a 3D model skeleton or something (but too lazy to pose one myself sooooo) Getting better at quick figure drawing BUT things still fall apart (=hours of redrawing) when I try to do anything more finished than a lazy sketch, which probably means that my foundation is still really off. Will keep trying to motivate myself to actually study then lol
Realised that the reason my faces look odd is because I keep drawing the front of the head as though it's flat. Need to keep curvature in mind all the time and probably do more photo studies
Success of the week: getting better at drawing two objects occupying the same space (f.eks hands holding stuff). This is a really promising improvement

UGGHHH I'm struggling so much with rendering today. Do you have any tips for how to make it less stressful? Or maybe advice on how to render in fun ways?
It depends what particular thing you’re rendering!! One thing I like to do is pick a new brush with a fun texture to render with, sometimes it turns out good sometimes not.
I also like to bring in lots of different colors, I think of every “single color” as a color palette sort of? So if I’m coloring skin, I’ll often lay down the base color but then shade with more vibrant primary triad colors. I tend to like drawing clothes to read flatter, so I’ll use a complementary palette with only 2 colors(other than base color), so the shadows recede and the highlights pop out sort of like a 3d glasses effect. The more colors I use the more dimensional I find the texture to be. With metals, I like to use a highlight color that is outside the complement and is not a strictly defined color palette; I feel this is good for shiny textures. For example, with gold texture Ill color most of it in yellows and oranges but use a bright cyan to do the highlights.
Using colors to harmonize or clash in different ways is mostly how I think of rendering. How I pick these colors is pretty vibes based, but mostly about using typical color palettes(triads, complements, etc) when I want to harmonize and go off-palette for things I want to clash. I also try to reuse colors throughout the piece; for example, the highlight on a dark color can also be the shadow on a light color.

weekly fun stuff: paintovers and composition experiments edition
Feels like I'm on the verge of making a breakthrough with integrating shapes and perspective/3D forms... I hope so anyway lol
Currently trying a new way of making thumbnails: drawing a pose on its own, filling in the silhouette and repeating for everything I need, then moving it all around/transforming as needed to compose the image. I think it's a pretty decent bridge between shapes and construction since at least the shapes are already defined... basically just trying to isolate as much of each step as possible so I'm not thinking about too much at one time
I'm actually getting noticeably better at drawing hands without using photo references! Still not something I should be doing for big pieces, but otherwise it's a good opportunity to get some more perspective practice in

not-very-in-depth compositional analysis of some Mead Schaeffer paintings! looking at how to group people in interesting ways and how to visually put them in opposition - obviously I'm using a greyscale layer over the actual paintings bc I'm only interested in values at this stage
Schaeffer is fantastic at grouping separate figures together into one large silhouette and also at using contrast to separate and distance focal points. the last painting is especially cool bc it contrasts the two main characters in so many different ways - one is the highest contrast spot in a generally homogenous but still busy amalgamation of people-silhouettes, the other is lower contrast overall but stands out against the plain bright white background with a pose that also 'breaks the silhouette'.

Do you have favorite types of AU to draw?
Hmm... tough one! I usually come up with a scenario first and then draw whatever AU it demands xD I'm a huge fan of the in-universe Emperor Hux AU and of just... making shit up within the sci-fi setting (can't say for sure there WOULDN'T be a giant future-telling eye creature somewhere in the SW universe!), and I think otherwise my taste leans towards the more dark and gothic side of things (Victorian gothic, alt music, dark fantasy). That, or any AU that gives me an excuse to draw cool machinery :P I'm not much into modern AUs, but they can still be fun with a good story behind them!
My favourite out-of-universe AUs that I have drawn were an Alien crossover and this weird scenario with Hux moving into vampire or spirit!Kylo's gothic castle (where many people have mysteriously gone missing). Yes, I am an edgelord.
