I love this bit here because literally everyone else eats with either a human friend (yes, Langley and Cabernet are friends even if all they do is gossip and squabble) or a Pokemon partner or both, but Shootie... just sits completely alone. It's very deliberate and I really like this little detail.
Aside from Vanipeti (Vanillite), who Trip's actually shown talking with and even chiding Iris for possibly hurting its feelings by being afraid of all Ice types, Shootie's hardly shown talking to or interacting with his Pokemon outside of the context of training or battling until after Adeku (Alder) gives him the answers he sought--the answer was mostly that strength was something he and his Pokemon would have to define for themselves, but in the Champion's opinion, he believed trust to be much more important and could sense Shootie's Jalorda loved him. "Are you living up to this little one's feelings?" "I think I am..."
After the talk, when Shootie reacts with an exasperated smile at having his name forgotten, rather than becoming very upset (he's accepted Adeku can't remember it), Jalorda's shown reacting more and mirroring Shootie's expressions. Of course, this is also where he starts being nicer to Satoshi and everyone else!
(Something else really cute, but only in the comic version and not the anime, is Jalorda smiling happily when Satoshi and Shootie shake hands at the league. ;3;)
We're later actually shown Shootie in the Te wo Tsunagou ending taking pictures, with Jalorda by his side. I definitely think it was meant to show him getting closer with his Pokemon after that, just as we're shown afterwards, Shootie no longer being rude or mean to Satoshi or rejecting his attempts friendship. ^^
So, all of these were definitely (misguided) attempts to focus only on becoming stronger. This little bio from the visual guide also supports that, claiming Trip avoids friendship because he believes it interferes with personal growth and ties it to his favouring pragmatic, logical approaches, unclouded by emotion.
Tumblr media
I think it might also be worth noting that the flashback with Adeku showed Shootie was very, very shy and timid when he was younger. He's scared of approaching Buffron (Bouffalant), even though he admires Adeku and has watched it battle so many times on-screen. I feel like the hesitation around Buffron and how he hesitates to accept Satoshi's handshake are related and at his core, Shootie is still very shy. It's just masked well with all that arrogance, ffff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even long before the Junior Cup and his very-much-needed conversation with Adeku (Alder), we see how much his Pokemon care for him. Roubushin (Conkelderr) menaces Satoshi (of its own will!) when he raises his voice and steps closer to Shootie (because Shootie was antagonizing him, mind!), so Shootie quickly recalls it (as he doesn't want it menacing him, Roubushin did that of its own accord!)...
There's also this otherwise very dramatic pan shot from earlier in the Junior Cup where despite looking all dramatic and serious, Jalorda's coiling around Shootie... Shootie's as unaffectionate as ever, but Jalorda's body language shows how protective and affectionate it is. ;3;
It's not the same as Shinji, where he was cold and distant and at times abusive (mainly Hikozaru, with the Zangoose incident in the Tag Battle where Shinji literally tried to trigger Blaze by sending Hikozaru against a Zangoose, intentionally recreating a traumatic incident that he saw Hikozaru activate Blaze while fighting for its life against Zangoose + compare & contrast: Shootie's never shown intentionally abusing any of his Pokemon and won't even take advantage of his opponent's Pokemon's phobia in battle; he only informs Satoshi so he can help Mijumaru [Oshawott] overcome it), but Shootie is cold and distant in a self-isolating way, although he possesses kindness, he's just... very, very cold, harsh, and tries to shut everyone else out. His reaction to kindness is, effectively, to shut it down and call it unnecessary or pointless, yet he also returns it.
Returning to the above scene, when Shootie's finished eating, Satoshi even tries to be friendly and talk to him, but (as usual, at this point in the series) his attempts at friendship are rejected, because anything that doesn't serve Shootie's pursuit of strength is brushed aside--however, he does return the kindness in his own very rude and very blunt sort of way, by helping pinpoint a weak point Satoshi could focus on improving, for the second time (the first time being when he noticed Mijumaru [Oshawott]'s closed eyes during the failed Aqua Jet.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's a jerk about it, but it's true [it tends to miss its mark], so Satoshi does indeed focus on training it, he just says it in the rudest way possible and even calls the move worthless, angering Satoshi, PFFT.
So, on one hand, Shootie's a jerk for various reasons likely relating to upbringing (classism in looking down on Satoshi for his rural background, for instance, and a general xenophobia), a misguided sense of what makes one strong—and on the other, he's likely still just as shy and his social skills have hardly improved since then, made worse by his single-minded pursuit of strength and shutting everyone else out.
It's also so sweet to me that Satoshi never let the things he said really get to him and also kept trying to understand him and make friends with him... I feel like meeting Shinji (Paul) first gave him a lot more patience and a much thicker skin.

“Plank houses are good houses for people in cold climates with lots of tall trees(...) only people who don't need to migrate spend the time and effort to build these large permanent homes(...) only coastal tribes, who make their living by fishing, made houses like these.”

Iris at Opelucid Academy was ostracized for her "strange" behaviour like splashing around in the fountain or picking fruits from the trees to eat... she also had trouble studying from books, as it seems she mostly learned through an oral tradition in her village from the Old Matriarch/Village Elder before that.
Tumblr media
There's a scene in the fishing competition episode where Iris gets very, very bored waiting for a Water type to bite at her lure, so she just pulls up her sleeves, sheds a layer, and quickly and easily catches a Water type Pokemon on her own!
The Pokemon world is a fantasy one, but with analogous regions/countries to our world and the American region we're shown (Unova, largely based on New York, but blended with other aspects of the U.S., too, so we also see the Resort Desert, where in the anime, an abandoned mining town built during the Gold Rush is also shown… which would help explain the reservations....)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both past (Champion Alder) and current (Champion Iris) Champions are Native--although Iris looks very different from the rest of the people in her village, so she's likely mixed... we'll likely never know because she seems to be a half-wild orphan, all her flashbacks of her life before Opelucid Academy are either among the forest Pokemon, with her childhood friend Shobu/Shannon, or with the Old Village Elder who taught her.
Tumblr media
Alder is most obviously inspired by Natives of the Great Plains, who relied heavily on the buffalo (American bison)... unlike how cruelly they were whittled down in number in reality to starve the Natives, they still exist in the wild in great numbers in the Pokemon world, which tends to portray humans working towards a more utopic world, aiming for harmony with nature, having learned from past mistakes and wars
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Satoshi Tajiri, after all, made the games to preserve the memory of the lost natural landscape of his youth which was paved over. Environmentalism and love of nature is at the heart of it (even if cynical fake fans see it as overglorified cockfighting because they do not see the trainer-Pokemon bond as more like coaches and athletes, do not see the Pokemon as highly sentient, or do not understand how they are shown in the anime to be very proud and battle for sport, often refusing to be captured unless a trainer first defeats them in battle and shows their strength & worthiness to train them).
As you travel from your idyllic hometown, you see more polluted cities, that create new monsters or alter existing ones through their pollution (Muk, Trubbish, Corsola->Cursola [a happy Water type becoming a sad Ghost type, bleached coral],) some species are hunted/poached to near-extinction (like the gentle Lapras), others were chased out of hospitable land by humans and forced to adapt and likely ultimately failed/went extinct (Zoroark->Hisuian Zoroark)...
As this lovely review by Tama Hero of the Red & Blue games describes: “The game asks you to be curious, learn, grow, & discover: that adults aren’t always right, even in positions of authority; learn how to be better than the adults that raised you; learn from their mistakes and maybe go on to make better decisions as you inherit this ruined earth.”"

Oh no don’t get me wrong I understand the desire to have Ash age (I absolutely have my own age headcanons). As the anime has the story structure that would support its characters aging, as opposed to the story structure of other series where it’s protagonists do not age.
My disagreement comes from it being used as a critique or a logical issue.
Having Ash (and almost all other characters) not age is a creative decision that makes complete sense to me. It keeps the series’s protagonists eternally relatable to the target audience, while also playing into Pokémon’s idea of being a childhood fantasy - i.e. one you never have to grow out of.
I understand applying real world logic (and the urge to do so) makes it not make sense time wise, but I believe that it fits many children’s initial concept of the passage of time, one where they themselves do not age but milestones (achieving long term goals, the passage of seasons, or the birth of a baby) still do.
Am I weird or does any else not get the whole ‘Ash is still 10’ problem people have. It’s a cartoon, are you going to argue about the ages of Tom and Jerry next?
