Dude you absolutely nailed it in the head with your responses about western art not spreading everywhere but don't you ever think that if your art doesn't reach everywhere it's somehow your fault and that you failed as an artist like by not making it more acessible or perhaps not relatable enough? You make so much sense when you talk about it but as a white privileged American I'm always wondering if my privilege is affecting my art and making it narrow minded and out of touch so when it fails to reach others it means that I, as an artist, failed to reach others. And yeah it's completely delusional for sure but doesn't every artist feels like that? And I guess people only feel this way about art because art is supposed to be about the human soul and universal experience of humanity and all that shit

short answer? no. I literally do not worry about that, think about that, or consider that.

long answer? I do not create for anyone other than myself. if somebody else comes across my work and finds something that resonates with them, or makes them think, or that they recognise themselves in, brilliant. I'm glad that happened. but my work was never created for them. it was created for me, and I couldn't care less if one person or a million people see it. I don't create to make a political statement or to reach certain people. I write about what I want to write about, and any themes or statements I make are because I want to, because that's the story I want to write. it's not for any other reason and I do not set out to do it.

finally, if I can insert an opinion, I don't think art is about the universal experience of humanity. there is no universal experience of humanity. enjoying art is a very common and unifying trait among humans, but the idea of a universal human experience is a myth. it isn't real. no two of us have the same experience and we never will. my art is for me. it's my experience. it's the stories I want to tell or that I'm chosen to tell. it is not for anyone else, though I welcome everyone to take from it what they will.

I think one thing that happens is that people get annoyed by something harmless or is just kind of a show of solidarity because they see it a bunch and then try desperately to form some deep moral reason to criticize the person doing it and it could be avoided by examining your emotions for more than 2 seconds.

Thoughts from an inadequate fanfiction author

I just read a Reddit post about feelings of inadequacy and jealousy in relation to other’s writing, that clawing in your stomach when you read something that is so gripping, so incredibly paced, or simply so wildly popular (dripping with kudos, comments, what have you) that you just want to quit, because you can’t write like that, you will never be as talented, as popular, etc, etc.

It’s such a ugly emotion that I hate to even admit to it, but I just feel like so many writers need to hear this and need to know they are not alone when they’re overcome with this feeling.

The thing that has really helped me is remembering that I’m the only person on earth who can tell the stories I tell.

Every person has a history and background that makes them uniquely capable of creating what they do.

I try to equate it to music. There are indie artists whose music I adore (Bright Eyes is a band that specifically comes to mind). What if your favorite band listened to Mozart or Beyoncé and thought, I will never be as talented at composing as Mozart or as famous as Beyonce, and therefore, I will never write another song.

How sad would you be, how bereft, if the artists you love gave up because they weren’t “the best?”

You are that perfect writer, not to everyone, but to someone.

That means something. It is so difficult to remember, but it all comes back to self-esteem. You are worthwhile and your writing is worthwhile NOT because it’s the best, but because there’s only one person in the world who could write it, and there is someone out there who needs to read it. Maybe you can make a stranger smile or feel or laugh, if only for a minute, and what an incredible gift that is.

So I urge you not to dim your shine for any reason. Keep going, find your audience, get better, KEEP AT IT. The worst thing you can do is give up, because that’s the only sure way you will never be that kind of amazing writer you wish to emulate.

If you’re curious, I wrote in college, then took a 10 year break due to feelings of inadequacy after having writer’s block and receiving a lukewarm response to some chapters I posted. I decided 2020 was my year and have written 42 works (some short stories, some long ones) since January. I swore to myself that I wouldn’t let anything stop me from enjoying my hobby again, and that’s why I want to encourage myself and others to feed their passions.

fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism

adult women aren’t inherently creepy for being in fandom and having hobbies apart from raising babies and doing taxes

the vast majority of people pushing back against the worrying trend of instigating harassment over fictional characters and relationships aren’t incest supporters or pedophiles, actually

liking a m/f ship doesn’t make someone a dirty heterosexual invading your space

preferring gay ships doesn’t make you ‘’woke’’ and good

no one owes you a disclaimer that they are a good person who recognizes that their favorite fictional villain’s actions are evil and that they don’t condone those actions irl

liking a fictional villain is in no way comparable to advocating abuse/murder/genocide/etc and you’re a fucking idiot if you believe that

just because a woman is attracted to a fictional villain doesn’t mean she’s promoting toxic relationships or going to end up in a toxic relationship. assuming women can’t tell fiction and reality apart stinks of internalized misogyny 

some rando’s a/b/o fanfics have none of the level of influence that popular tv shows and movies spreading propaganda have

no one owes you a detailed description of their traumas and mental health problems

abusive relationships are not the same as enemies to lovers ships

y’all need to chill the fuck out over people, relationships, actions and events that don’t actually exist and learn how to enjoy and discuss them like normal people

fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism
