okay but I just realized how difficult it would be for Amelia to write her name when she starts Hogwarts? 

I mean, at Hogwarts she’s known as ‘Amelia Potter’, not ‘Amelia Bennett’. She’s technically required to write her name as ‘Amelia Potter’ on whatever she writes her name on. But the thing is, Amelia doesn’t consider herself a Potter. In fact during her first year she plain out refuses to want anything to do, let alone accept, her biological family. She didn’t even know she had been adopted until (about) two months before starting Hogwarts. Two months isn’t nearly enough time for someone who had been traumatized after losing their entire family to suddenly start calling themselves the name of a biological family they never knew existed. To Amelia, the Potters are strangers to her. 

Being forced to write her name as ‘Amelia Potter’ again and again and again makes Amelia feel like she’s being forced to forget her old life and her adoptive family. It’s like a constant reminder that the people she spent the last 14 years believing were her biological parents was a lie. Even when she introduces herself she just calls herself ‘Amelia’ instead of ‘Amelia Potter’ or ‘Amelia Bennett’ because a) she refuses to acknowledge herself as a Potter and b) if she says Bennett then there is a good chance she’ll be questioned if she’s suppose to be Harry’s sister and thus have explain the whole adoption story which is something she really despises doing. 

I just find the whole thing incredibly painful. I’d also imagine sometimes Amelia would write her name as Amelia then pause, unsure whether to add Potter or Bennett, writing both, scribbling them both out and just leaving her name as Amelia. She knows she’s known as Amelia Potter within the Hogwarts grounds, but in her heart she’s never been a Potter: she’s always been a Bennett.
