idk how to categorize this headcanon but kim, especially in new dawn, has a very hard time choosing between her head and her heart. she’s a mama bear, always has been, even before she was a mother, and she’s not shy about the fact that she’d die for nick, and later carmina. she would bring down the world to keep her family safe. . . but once they begin to build prosperity, her priorities are forced to shift. she still loves her family with all of that fierceness, but she’s forced to give her focus and love to the other people in her care. she’s a LEADER now, and being a leader sometimes means sacrificing your personal needs for the good of your greater community. this comes to a head for kim when nick is kidnapped by the highwaymen, and carmina goes off to find thomas rush. her instinct is to go after nick, to try to recuse him, and later to accompany carmina when she leaves. but she knows the people of prosperity need her -- and she’s forced to leave her husband in harm’s way and let her daughter walk headfirst into danger. she has to let her family suffer and risk themselves on their own because there are other people that need her. her head roots her in prosperity, where she is needed and where she can protect her community. . . but her heart aches for her family.  kim is a lot tougher in new dawn, at least on the outside, and a lot of that is due to necessity. she has to be tough, has to be analytical, has to be strong. . . because anything else would break her heart.

it’s kim’s favorite april fool’s day prank HANDS DOWN – and she finds her chin tipping back in laughter as nick practically shouts at her. she’s never loved anyone the way she loves this man right here. . . and she knows in her heart that love is never going to diminish. kim turns to him, a bright grin on her face as she reaches out, fingers curling into nick’s belt loops to pull him closer to her -- closing the distance between them in the middle of their kitchen.❝ you’re an april fool. ❞     kim teases, standing on her toes to give nick a kiss, long and lingering, hands still resting on his hips. eventually she pulls back so she can BEAM up at him.                   ❝ but you’re my FAVORITE fool. ❞

although kim hadn’t been sure what she would feel when she finally relented – finally said YES – she hadn’t exactly been prepared for the disappointment clawing at her chest. nor had she been prepared for the fear, the foreboding – the sheer terror of what it is she may have gotten herself into. oh, she knows she’s signed her life away, but she fears she’s done more than that. fears the WORST – because, as we all know, this is what john seed is capable of. but this is THEIR ONLY CHOICE. what’s the other option? continue to fight eden’s gate? lose? be forced from their home? let their daughter starve to death? for carmina to live… they had to surrender. the path of resistance was no longer viable. it was give in, or death. and… were it just kim and nick, things would be different – they could die for their cause. but not now. not with their child on the line. this was what a mother does. a mother SACRIFICES. still, though, as john leans closer, kim straightens up, leaning slightly away from way, flinching as he touches her. she hates this – hates it with every fiber of her being. but it’s necessary. SHE DOESN’T HAVE A CHOICE. but when john reaches for her daughter, kim’s eyes widen. she shakes her head, taking a step back. he can have everything – EVERYTHING – from her. but he can’t have her daughter. ❝ no. that’s my condition. you can’t take her. ❞     kim curls the baby closer to her chest, feeling the little girl squirm in her arms,      ❝ let me stay with her. wherever you need to go, she’ll go. . . but i’ll go with her. ❞ kim’s eyes are serious, tinged with just a slight amount of desperation, her voice soft .      ❝ don’t do this, john. ❞

    Mom was…busy. Again. Mom was busy a lot, but Carmina wasn’t mad about it. She didn’t feel less loved. Carmina knew her family, she knew she’d always be loved there. Just…sometimes she wished she could have more time with her mom. Less fights with Highwaymen. Less stresses with New Eden. Less stresses at Prosperity.

    Maybe…Maybe if Dad was back– That was another thought for later on. That was definitely not something she wanted to think about, her Father somewhere they couldn’t find him, or worse. He could be–

    Nope. Not thinking about that. Just gonna spend time with Mom. As the sun was hung high in the afternoon sky, Carmina walked into the house, finding her mother mulling over more maps. Quietly, Carmina moved to rest her head on Kim’s shoulders and she muttered quietly.

    “Hey Mom, are you busy?” Obvious question. “I mean, uh, really busy. ‘Can’t spare a minute’ busy? Are you that busy, or just normal busy? I can go help Cap if you’re super busy…”

kim is busy -- it seems like she’s ALWAYS BUSY these days. there are movements to plan, highwaymen patrols to outsmart, ethanol to gather, and people to rescue. . . it’s a miracle kim rye even finds a moment to sleep these days. and what little energy she has leftover after organizing prosperity is spent in her efforts to rescue her husband. . . she hasn’t been able to do much of anything else, she can’t even remember the last time she ate. and unfortunately, her daughter has fallen by the wayside. it wasn’t on purpose -- kim loves carmina more than the air she breathes. but it’s so easy to let things fall aside when there’s so much to do, especially with rush here and carmina out helping the captain. of course kim checks in with her nearly every day -- but it seems like they’re always missing each other. and oh, does kim miss her daughter. yet, she’s right here, laying her head on her mother’s shoulder, drawing kim’s focus from the maps before her, to the young woman at her side. she smiles, running a hand through her daughter’s hair. ❝ i’m never too busy for you, ‘mina, ❞      she tells her, pulling herself back from the maps to face her daughter. carmina deserves this time. . . her planning and strategizing can wait,      ❝ what’s up, kiddo? ❞

it’s so casual, the way he says it – just like he’s used that name for her all his life. ma. but kim’s never heard that from james – never heard the boy call her mom even though she’s stepped into that role so many years ago. she remembers the moment they took him in just like it was yesterday. this lost, poor little boy on their doorstep, hurt by a family that claimed to love him. we love you and we will thank you. in the end, you will thank us.she knows the pain he comes from, and she’s never wanted anything more but to give james the loving home he deserved. all kim rye ever wanted was to protect him, to love him and to show him the life any and every child deserves. if she could take away just some of the pain that his father john seed caused him, that would be enough.of course, she’s always thought of him as her son. ever since the moment he’d come to them, bleeding and scared on their porch. the moment she’d swept him inside, she knew – this is my son, and i will be his mother.but, she’s never expected james to return the feeling.at least, not until she finally heard him call her mom.kim, for her credit, tries her best to keep her emotions in check – it’s really nothing more than a slip of his tongue, probably, and she doesn’t want to call attention to it. but her heart is SWELLING.❝ just… right over there’ll do just fine, sweetheart, ❞     she offers, gesturing to a counter where he can place the box. kim waits for a moment, watching him, before beckoning him over,     ❝ c’mere for a second, james. ❞once he’s close enough, she opens her arms, enveloping him in a HUG. he may be taller than she is now, but she’s still got enough motherly instinct to wrap him tight in an embrace.❝ i know this is hard for you, and i know this place has a lot of memories. ❞      kim offers softly, rubbing his back gently, ❝ but we’re gonna make something great here. this place is going to become a BEACON OF HOPE. and you, and me, and your father and your sister are going to make that happen. ❞kim pulls back, holding james at arms length, taking a moment to admire how far he’s come.❝ i love you, son. ❞this is my son, and i am his mother.

little things about nick and kim

they’ve been together since they were teenagers

kim’s parents hated nick a lot when they were kids, they thought nick got in the way of kim’s ‘big dreams’ and thought he wasn’t right for her. but her big dreams were to be with the boy she loved and start a family one day so nick wasn’t getting in the way of anything

they used to sneak out a lot, and nick would climb up to kim’s window and throw stuff at it until she came out

they were absolute juvenile delinquents

they still are even though they’re adults

they’ve vandalized several of john seed’s signs. . . and even his ranch once

despite their original dislike of nick, kim’s parents did come to their wedding, and eventually her dad shook nick’s hand and her mom hugged him

their wedding song was bohemian rhapsody because they’re idiots

they sang all the parts and had a fully choreographed dance that they rehearsed in the hangar out behind the rye house for two weeks prior to the wedding. yes, the dance including nick lifting kim

nick did the whole thing where he carried kim across the threshold and didn’t even smack her head on the doorframe (there was a close call, though)

they loaded up carmina (the plane) with a shit ton of food and booze and everything they needed and flew away to some beautiful remote spot nick picked out to camp for their honeymoon

kim got her ‘nick’ tattoo the day after they got back from the honeymoon

they moved in together before they got married, but were still super excited for the wedding and everything

kim still gets butterflies when someone calls her ‘mrs. rye’

even if nick is woefully wrong, kim will back him up with her entire force

except when he’s arguing with her and then, good luck nick

kim hates being asked for relationship advice because she honestly just thinks she got really lucky to have a guy like nick

though she will tell you the key to anything is patience

kim will never brag about it, but she’s probably the second best airplane pilot in hope county (sorry, john) -- after all, she did have the best teacher

nick can outdrink kim and has had to carry her home from the spread eagle more than once

kim has never once doubted nick’s ability to protect their family and keep them safe

they both argued with the doctor when he told kim she has to stop shooting when she was seven months

there has never been a moment, in their entire relationship, that kim has ever believed that she didn’t fully love nick, or that nick didn’t fully love her. no matter what they’ve gone through, that love was a given, a truth, and kim’s never doubted it for a second.
