10/26- I’ve spent the last couple weeks experimenting in After Effects and creating simple 5 to 10 seconds spots. Thinking of them as motion graphic sketches. I never fully realized how powerful of a tool motion and animation was. Preparing to dig in super deep.
I met with MCAD faculty member and motion designer Peter Steineck this week to share work and how to progress my limited knowledge of motion graphics. Feeling inspired, I’m currently developing a short piece to submit to his open call animation showcase Hellavision Television next month!
10/18- I’m currently working at MCAD’s in-house design studio DesignWorks as the MFA Designer on staff. I was tasked with branding the annual MFA Open Studio Night Event.
I wanted to be playful, weird, and bluntly to the point with the design. More to come as we get closer to the event (big ass posters, GIF projections, social media content, and other promo items).
Oct. 2 | Critique 1: “24 Posters”. Getting wild with type and textures and patterns. I challenged myself to fill a whole gallery wall lengthwise with posters that I had been creating through an iterative process that started physically with paper cutting.
After the feedback, I need to think more about the language and intention behind language in my work. In addition to that, I didn’t put enough thought into the ketchup and mustard color scheme other than they complimented each other and are a humorous pairing of colors seen throughout American pop culture. It was rightly called out only as a device to unify disparate pieces and as vague reference. I will use color to my advantage going forward with strategic choices.
Finally, I relied too much on cultural sampling that fell under very different historical and contemporary contexts. From experimenting with American wood type to distorting Helvetica, making millennial internet references, and mimicking screen printing techniques digitally, while all great paths to explore; displayed as a piece together loses the focus.
Though, as an exercise in experimentation, iteration, and volume this initial work had me hitting the ground running and ready to dive into more weirdness going forward.
