there’s an old myth that runs through his family ( &&. whatever gossip that surrounds it ) that a psychic’s power surges through their hair. it’s generally accepted that one of great strength must grow it out, no matter how untamed &&. unruly it may reach. the standard is that only minimal trimmings are encouraged, as to ensure it can be navigated with some sort of ease. there’s neither concrete detail proving or disproving it, &&. no one wants to exactly argue against it. the reality is, of course, it varies from psychic to psychic as a case-by-case basis. 

although avery lacks any noteworthy psychic abilities, he still grows his out as a symbol of status. for this reason, he makes a point of taking great care of it, &&. has for the 3-4 years that he’s spent growing it out. touching it is an absolute no go ( unless given express permission ), &&. if you try, you will be restrained with telekinesis. flipping a strand over his shoulder is just an indirect, silent way to say look, i’m so much better than you.

in a theoretical sense, chopping it all off would devastate him. it essentially resetting one’s progress back to zero &&. making them rework from the ground up. never mind the social disgrace he’d feel as a result.

sometimes i think abt avery and the fact that like. pre-cutting his shit Out post-isle of armor a lot of his relationships ( for example, klara ) start out on like. very toxic terms. like he’s so used to unhealthy interpersonal relationships thanks to his family and has this fake-on-the-outside-talks-shit-behind-closed-doors mentality that like. he does not know how to form bonds and communicate in a reasonable and effective manner. 

#LONG POST BE UPON YE i rambled in the tags #with cases like klara for instance they at least eventually come to an understanding #whereas like #i think w/honey and mustard it was hard for him to accept this idea that they like genuinely cared for him and wanted to see him grow #so he was always waiting for this shoe to drop where they sincerely thought of him as a failure and all of it was bullshit #and when he realized it'd never come it was so overwhelming that he just. didn't really know how to respond beyond breaking down into tears. #and the victor / gloria is a whole other boat to get into. i think the hardest things he'd have to do with them is both apologizing but just #also .. genuinely thanking them bc i do feel like deep deep down he is grateful for what they did #he doesn't know how to express gratitude or admiration properly. he doesn't know how to pick things up without like. #immediately getting jealous / 'intimidated' in a sense / being extremely fucking judgmental #granted i do think him being judgmental and haughty will always be a part of who he Is but like........ #at least he can actually be appreciative of people and Not immediately get on guard bc he thinks everything theyre doing is a competition #of some kind #idk he's a very messy person for a very long time but he'll...... he'll get there #im not explaining this as eloquently as i could take it as u will #✦ — ¦ ❝ [dragging avery across the dirt] finally got me one of them he/theys. / ooc.
