Ok ok but I absolutely love the trope with two characters in love and its like:
Person A is extremely ill and dying but doesn’t have the heart to tell Person B so A has to act like everything’s fine and B is oblivious.
Bonus points if some angsty stuff happens like they get in an argument and stop talking, then a few days later B gets a call that A died because of their condition, making B feel horrible and guilty like ‘I never got to say goodbye, they died thinking I hated them..’

{•HANAHKI DISEASE•}
The more sexual version
Tumblr media
Overview
As stated previously, there is a lesser common version of hanahaki which takes a more sexual route.
Within this version, the disease is contracted through having sex, and manifests in the pubic section of the lower body in the form of flowers. The development of the disease is linked with your level of stress, applicable to the feeling of rejection or unrequited love.
Traits
Just like normal hanahaki it does get progressively painful and uncomfortable through-out the stages until it eventually leads to death.
Cures
Its possible to treat the disease by cooling that part of the body- though its only a temporary solution.
In the case that the love of the afflicted person is requited, the body heat that is a result from the warm feeling the person gets acts as a way to cure the disease, and a healthily led romantic relationship aids in getting rid of it at last. During that time, the afflicted person will start loosing flowers through their lower body until the body ultimately heals itself.
Since its a parasitic plant- it can also be removed with surgery. Though after affects can possibly include loss of feeling in pubic areas, lower sex drive and loss of romantic feelings/falling in love.

{•HANAHAKI DISEASE•}
Tumblr media
Overview
[ Hanahaki disease ]
(Han- ah-hack- ee)
Hanahaki disease is a fictional disease most commonly found in fanfiction. This disease is known for forming due to unrequited love (both platonically and romantically). When suffering from unrequited/one sided love, flowers will begin to grow in the victims lungs, causing them to cough up flowers. When left untreated- the plants roots embed in the lungs eventually suffocating and killing the victim.
Traits
Traits and symptoms of the disease can include:
-Coughing up flowers and blood
-Lightheadedness/dizziness
-Heightened feelings of anxiety
-Pain in and around the chest
-Aching limbs
-A paler complexion
-Loss of apetite
-Shortness of breathe
Cures
For this, there are multiple ways to cure the disease.
-Admitting their feelings to the person/people they love and having it become requited
-The beloved noticing their feelings and returning their lovely
-Surgery
[ONLY KNOWN CURES SO FAR- MORE TO BE ADDED IN FUTURE]
Surgery
When getting surgery to remove the disease, there have been many reported outcomes.
^ When writing your story you can choose for whatever surgical outcome you want, it’s up to you ^
1. The victim just gets the flowers removed and everything goes back to normal
2. Once the flowers are removed the victim forgets the person/people they were in love with
3. After the flowers have been removed the victim forgets everything
4. Once the flowers have been removed the victim can no longer feel anything, a variation of this is that the victim can no longer fall in love. These both can either be temporary or permanently
Time
The Hanahaki disease isn’t the quickest. It takes a while for the roots and buds and petals to fully grow/form.
Depending on how severe it is the victim usually has 2-7 months before it kills them.
Extra Details
Many people use cherry blossoms or rose petals as the flower that’s coughed up. Some works featuring this disease choose flowers with meanings or flowers that the beloved of the victim likes.
There is a variation of hanahaki that focuses more on the sexual aspect of things- I’ll write about it in another post though :)
