This story is much easier to tell out loud but I will do my best in text:
When I was 17 I was admitted for and spent 9 months in inpatient psychiatric treatment. 6 months of this was spent in a very small ward in London - only 11 patients - starting in mid-July.
The age range for most adolescent wards is 13-17, so no media above a 12 rating is allowed to be kept on the main premises. However, there was a long period where more than half of us were 15 or over, so they set up a 15+ movie night where a staff member would sit with us in the activity room in a different part of the hospital and watch a film together.
Psychiatric wards do not have a huge budget, or enough staff coverage to spend a lot of time preparing for most acitivities - meaning that all the DVDs had been donated and staff hadn't taken the time to screen them. You can probably already see where this is going.
So. It's 7pm. We've had an incredibly beige hospital dinner and evening meds. The activity co-ordinator, who I will be calling David, rounds us up and we head up to the 4th floor. Everyone has to take the stairs because I am afraid of lifts - not the most auspiciious start.
Picture the ambience of this room with me: bright red pleather L-shaped couch, hospital-bright fluorescent lights or darkness with no in-between, one of those TVs that's inside a plastic cage so that it can't be turned on without the remote (important so that patients can't turn it on at inappropriate times.
All 6 of us sit down on this horrible sofa and David unlocks the DVD cabinet. None of us recognise any of the films available, so we pick completely at random, landing on a Wes Anderson flick we haven't heard of. One of the other kids had loved The Fantastic Mr Fox, so we all figure it's a safe bet. David sets the disc in the tray, relocks the cabinet, and hits play on the remote.
It's an alright film, I think. I don't remember it verywell because the plot is about to be overshadowed by a beautiful moment of irony. The film is The Royal Tenenbaums, and we've just watched Richie walk into the bathroom and shave his head. Everyone in the room realises what is about to happen simultaneously.
David SHOOTS out of his chair to turn it off, but can't find the remote quickly enough, and it takes even longer to open the DVD cabinet. He panics. He tries, valiantly, to shield the screen from us using his body - but he's a skinny man and this screen is HUGE. Behind his arms and strange little dance, we can all still clearly see this incredibly graphic suicide attempt playing out. Eventually, David realises it's useless, gives up, and just slumps on the floor.
Most of us ended up here because of similar circumstances and the absurdity of the tableau is hysterical. The room just erupts and we are rolling about in fits of laughter as the aftermath in the hospital plays out, and it ends up being this strange and beautiful shared catharsis. We calm down, eventually, and watch the remainder of the film in a companionable reverie.
When we head back down to the ward afterwards, all of us are in a better mood than we started with - except for David, who has to write 6 separate incident reports, and personal apologies to our parents.
TL;DR: nothing has ever made me laugh as hard as watching Luke Wilson slit his wrists onscreen.

Please enjoy this photograph—from our student show based on the improv form The Armando Diaz Hootenanny and Theatrical Experience—of me having to pause mid-monologue for an audience laugh break after I revealed the film we watched for the over-15s movie night on a psych ward was The Royal Tenenbaums.
