some nights, raffi has a very light sleep, other night nothing could ever wake her up. it depends on many different factors, far too many for her to list, although she has thought about writing them all down before. maybe one day she will actually sit down and do it, just for herself to keep track of it. other nights, the ex-spy simply cannot find sleep at all and usually she spends these nights reading ( they used to involve drinking but since she is trying to stay sober that is not an option ); ever since she started spending her night with seven ( @cptnseven​ ) , sleepless nights would be spent reading to the blonde until she fell asleep. 

usually, once seven fell asleep, raffi would read for a few more minutes before putting the book aside and just watch her for a while. it always makes her heart skip a beat to see how calm and relaxed she could look in her sleep; more so to know that raffi’s presence was helping. moments like these it is so easy to fall even more for the other woman, and she knows she’s not able to put it into words just yet. maybe one day. for now, this is enough. 

for an hour or so, raffi just lays next to her, content with the silence and faint light of the bedside lamp. but as soon as she realizes that sleep simply doesn’t get to her, she picks up her book again, reading the familiar words without paying too much attention. it’s not like she doesn’t know the book by heart already, there’s not a single book in her home that she hasn’t read multiple times; most of them show it, too. beside her, seven is quiet and raffi is glad. she’s learned there’s little movement when seven’s concerned ( unless it was a bad night ) and by now she has gotten very used to it.

that is exactly why raffi is fully focussed on seven when she begins to move ever so slightly. it starts with a little shuffling around and raffi thinks she’s just looking for a more comfortable position. when she shuffling doesn’t stop, however, she puts the book aside and lifts the arm closest to seven, preventing her from bumping into it as she moves closer to throw an arm over her middle and rest her head on her chest. it doesn’t take very long and soon enough seven’s fully curled up against raffi, effectively using her as a pillow. 

when she thought she couldn’t love her anymore, things like that happen.

the brunette is careful as she brushes a few strands out of the blonde’s face, cupping her cheek for a moment and just enjoying the feeling of their bodies being so close. if this is what she gets for a sleepless night, she never wants to sleep again. although that might just be a bit dramatic. carefully, she shuffles down a bit, getting more comfortable before wraping her own arm around the sleeping form of her girlfriend ( oh, she will never grow tired of that word ). book set aside, she turns off the lamp, welcoming the darkness like an old friend. 

they are close enough for her to see the very features of seven’s face; calm, relaxed, and she could have sworn she saw a smile. this is it, she thinks, this is how i want to fall asleep every night for the rest of my life. and maybe one day she’s brave enough to tell seven.

surprise crosses her features, wondering if she has heard her right just now. both of them are stubborn, too stubborn for their own good. admitting the other is right almost feels like a very intimate thing between the two of them, something raffi values. when her features begin to soften again, she relaxes a little more, and she doesn’t even think about what they have been arguing anymore.

“ maybe you’re right, ”    seven ( @cptnseven​ ) had said and raffi knows the words will ring in her ears a little longer. slowly, raffi reaches for the blonde’s hand, gently tugging as an invitation for her to move closer.    “ i am, ”    she says with as much confidence as she can muster. it is not that she is arrogant but she likes being right. she likes knowing that she’s not imagining things, making them up, having them only exist in her own mind. giving her hand a suqeeze, she waits for seven to look at her, if only for a moment, offering a small ( maybe even apologetic ) smile.

“ look, i know you don’t like it, but this will work out. ”    truth be told, raffi has several doubts of her own but for seven’s sake she pushes past them, believes that together they can make it work.    “ we both have been through worse. what could the 21st century possibly throw at us that we won’t be able to handle? hell, we’re both smart, we’re skilled, i just need you to trust me. ”    not for a second would she doubt that the other woman trusts her. neither of them might be a great team player but they sure as hell make a great team. maybe even because of it.    “ enough of this. how about we see what else tallinn’s got in her storage and make dinner. i’ll do just as you say. does that sound okay to you? ”

a worn out book in her hands, raffi is completely immersed in one of her stories. it is different these days; in the past, she used these stories as an escape from reality, a whole new world where she could be someone completely else. she doesn’t need these escapes as much anymore; she’s happier, more balanced. the thought alone fills her with so much pride. an empty cup has been abandoned on the table in front of her, waiting to be either refilled or disposed. usually, it would stay there for a few more hours. but not today.

seven’s presence didn’t go unnotice ( she believes it is impossible for her to not know when she’s close ) and yet her voice makes her head go up so fast, it would be easy to mistake it for surprise. truthfully, part of it may just be that, surprise about the question, but more than anything it is delight.

“ how do you take your coffee? ”    seven ( @cptnseven​ ) repeats, probably thinking raffi didn’t hear her the first time. closing the book, she looks at her empty cup before looking back at the blonde.    “my coffee? dark and bitter — just like my broken soul. ”    the grin on her face should be enough to give away that she’s merely joking but she also knows that seven doesn’t always seem to understand her jokes so she quickly adds,    “ i’m kidding, a shot of milk and two cubes of sugar. ”

at that, she reaches for her cup, wrapping both hands around it as if there was any warmth left to soak in.    “ sometimes, if i’m feeling adventurous, i add a bit of caramel flavor. ”  tilting her head, she arches her brow.    “ are you planning to make me coffee? ”

you know what i love? i love the plants in raffi’s home. they aren’t just plants, they are friends, they are something she can take care of, something she can talk to, something she can put time and effort into and watch them grow and just feel like she’s doing something good. her plants give her a purpose. of course sneakleaf comes with an advantage for her, offering her an escape from reality she so despertaely needs. raffi and her plants are a beautiful co-dependence bc they need her to survive in the desert and in return they give her moments of calm and comfort and a purpose to keep going.
