We absolutely love the work of African American artist Romare Bearden. Not only are his abstract collages and paintings beautiful, but he was also a dedicated humanist interested in pushing young and emerging artists forward. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Bearden later moved to New York where he became firmly ingrained in the Harlem Renaissance movement and its surrounding community. He was most active during the 50s and 60s after a stint in Europe with the US Army.

Bearden also had an interest for music, in particular jazz. In fact, he believed that his art, like jazz, expressed a sense of freedom and improvisation. His interest ran so deep that he even wrote a few songs, including the 1950s hit ‘Seabreeze’. His work was also used as cover art for various artists, including Donald Byrd and Wynton Marsalis.

If you happen to be in New York between now and March 14th, we certainly recommend checking out his A Black Odyssey Exhibition at Columbia University’s Wallach Gallery. Also, for more information on the artist’s life and legacy check out the Romare Bearden Foundation website.
