Oh. That's [...] a lot of bat facts.

These seem pretty fond of the trees around my house. And I'm not exactly bothered or afraid of them, especially since these seem like... tiny. Just kinda strange to have them hanging around.

Only some of our local bats live in caves. Some prefer trees, and lots have adapted to human civilization -- like a lot of other city animals -- and live in and around buildings. If you see a lot of them in one place it's probably just a colony or a seasonal maternity roost. No reason to worry or be afraid of them. Bats are never a problem.

They're important for pollination and pest control! And several of Maine's bat species are endangered, so if you see large colonies around, that's always a good sign for our local ecosystem.

Where were they? If it's a big colony, that's something worth tracking. At the Wicked Rest Bat Conservation Society, we try and keep tabs on the major ones in town.

I'm a groundskeeper and I also keep up with the maintenance. A lot of gravedigging, a lot of cleaning up vandalism, and some working on the pipes.
