I mean…if this tweet doesn’t describe roller derby perfectly, I dunno what does.

Practice Update
...The first one in like...700 years, but y’know. Whatever.
I had a really, really shitty bootcamp on Thursday. Like, it was really bad. I felt like I couldn’t do anything right, I felt like even the most basic thing eluded me, and on top of that, the trainers were super condescending, and everything sucked.
This bootcamp was not at the league I hope to join/am skating fresh meat for, so...I think I’m not going to go back to the last session on Thursday and I’m feeling good about it. I’d much rather devote my time to the league I actually want to join.
That being said, tonight’s practice was so amazing. After last night’s practice, I asked some of the league skaters about a couple of things which ended with them hella loosening my trucks, and I tried them for the first time today. I thought I would fall flat on my face, but I didn’t. And not only did I not fall flat on my face, I had the best practice I’ve had in a very very long time.
Tonight, I was able to slalom, swoop/cut, single-foot glide, and slalom on a single foot. I also got closer to my crossovers than I’ve ever been able to be, and yeah.
Tonight’s practice was amazing. I really, really needed it.
It was great. I’m going to an open skate tomorrow, and I’m going to try to practice some skills like single-leg gliding with my leg far over so that I can get used to what the positioning feels like for crossovers. I can’t wait to get back on skates tomorrow night.

Catching up!
I haven’t written about practices in forever, but I really feel like if I recap every single practice, this blog will get boring in a hurry. So! I’m just gonna blog about what I think is important or cool or whatever instead.
So since I last wrote, my skates came in! And WOW they weren’t kidding - getting your own skates makes such a difference. I’m so much more comfortable on them than I ever was on the rentals, and I’m able to actually...do things now? I hadn’t ever been able to serpentine/weave like I was supposed to, without picking up my feet, and as soon as I put my own skates on, I was able to do it. WHAT?!
I just have to re-learn how to do my stops, basically - now that my trucks are looser, I’m just not used to it. But I think one-footed plow stops will be easier now.
Tonight wasn’t actually practice - tonight was actually a bootcamp. It was pretty great, actually! I re-got my T-stops, and kiiiinda re-got my plow stop. I also learned a BUNCH of stuff tonight! So now not only can I serpentine, I know how to (but obviously need to practice a LOT:
One foot hop
Two foot hop (kinda)
180 transition? ish? I did it a couple of times and the trainers were saying that they looked okay. So that’s cool. They definitely need practice. But that’s okay - I know what to do, so I know how to practice it and that’s what matters
Toe stop walk and toe stop jog (but not toe stop run...yet)
Duck walk to get speed
T-stop
Plow stop (kinda)
One-foot plow stop
One-point fall (at speed!)
Two-point fall (needs a lot of work)
Four-point fall (needs a lot of practice)
Side step
Step forward and back
Grapevine (needs SO much work)
Crossover (also needs SO much work)
Glides! My glides are getting so much better! They are still not great, but they’re getting much better.
And all of this in....like...3 weeks?! This is RIDICULOUS. I’m not anywhere close to where I need to be yet, but I am still so so proud of where I am now vs. where I came from.
I’m so proud.
At the end of bootcamp, we did a “game” of sorts. The trainers put cones all over the opposite end of the floor, and split us into 3 teams. We had to skate one by one as fast as we could, get a single cone, and skate as fast as we could back to our team and tag our next teammate.
I practiced duck runs to get up to speed, one knee falls at speed (!!!!) and it was AWESOME. It was so much fun! And it doesn’t hurt that my team (team 2) won both times. ;) We even got more cones the second time than the first! Awesome!
Ugh I would literally talk about derby forever and ever, but I’ll stop now - I’m just so proud of how far I’ve come.

2 days after day 1 of Fresh Meat
I’m not as sore as I thought I would be!
Last week I went to a boot camp with a different league than I went to Fresh Meat for - I’d already paid for it ages and ages ago and didn’t want to waste the money. So I went. It was...okay. I didn’t really like it that much, and I was just glad that I’d already gone to a boot camp with the league I’m going to Fresh Meat with, so the boot camp I didn’t like was not the first experience I had with derby.
It was 2-3 hours of basically total torture? It was continuous work, and I was exhausted. I wasn’t sore though which was good.
Sunday’s FM was rough. I’m still in rentals because my skates haven’t come in. They’re super backordered and Jay at the pro shop said they’d have them at the factory on 8/1 (in 7 days!) or so...and I’m trying really hard to be patient, haha. I just can’t wait until I get my own skates! Rentals are super hard to do things in. They don’t do what I think they should and it’s hard to make them do things with edges and so on.
One of the trainers, Karma, was telling me that things are going to be super hard for me right now as long as I’m on rentals. I assured her that I ordered my own skates and she told me that she wasn’t trying to push me to order them, just to tell me not to get too terribly frustrated if I’m not doing things as well as I’d like while I’m on rentals. And then, she said “you’re doing really damn well for someone on rentals”, which was really good to hear.
When I went to the boot camp last week, I got my plow stop, or something closely approximating it - it doesn’t feel strong but it stops me, so that’s something. I was crap with T-stops though...and Sunday I actually managed to do a T-stop or a few.
My two-point falls really need work though. Tuna and Karma sounded worried about the state of my knees because I just don’t have enough control to slowly lower one knee and then the other. I really need to work on strengthening my core and legs - I think that’ll help.
This is all super jumbled.
Anyway, I’m literally the freshest of fresh meat for HARD now and I’m super excited about it!
