"This is C.Q. Cumber, a humble sea cucumber who works as a subway conductor and guide to the underground test facility. Despite his mysterious looks, this diminutive dude is a total pro and takes his job quite seriously. Whenever you're in trouble, try talking to him."

Hello! It's your main man Ruffle from @monochrome--clown and @rufus-in-utopia !! I have observed a sever lack of CQ Cumber roleplay accounts for whatever reason, so I decided to step up for the little fella :). (I love him anyway so I don't mind at all...

[Rufus thought for a moment.]
[A long, hard moment.]
[Because she didn't actually know.]
[How she'd actually broken free herself was an enigma to even her own self.]
[She never got around to answering that question, because it was basically unanswerable for her.]
[A pang of nerves shot through her and she looked away from Tartar again.]
( @commanders-quarters )
… The sight of a sanitized Octoling was far, far from unfamiliar to Tartar, but spotting one that wasn’t an Elite for once was definitely an unusual sight.
Due to the broad physical similarities across the army he’d formerly coordinated, it became… a bit challenging to distinguish between them at times. Its head cranes to the side in confusion.
“Are you, perhaps… one of mine?” He asks, pointing a claw towards the Octoling before him. “Or do you belong to… a different telephone?” he humored with a slight sarcasm.
"Uhm."
[Rufus very clearly seemed uncomfortable. It was evident in the way she shifted her weight from her front to her back, seeming to shrink away from the phone without actually taking a step.]
[She never truly answered the phone's question, instead opting for a single statement.]
"Why Are You Here."
[Her tone was robotic, perfectly monotone, yet as grave as death itself.]

"No."
[Again, not a lie. She had heard of the project, but not from Marina. The two hadn't spoke since Marina went AWOL years ago.]
[She'd gained some semblance of confidence, though it was fleeting, she managed to hold eye contact for longer than 2 seconds. Progress.]

"It's..."
[She hesitated. This could be a ploy – a simple trick to keep her talking for longer, to keep her down here.]
[But, she continues her sentence.]
"...Been Fine."
[It wasn't a complete lie, more like a half truth.]

[Yes or No.]
[Two simple choices.]
[They should have been simple choices.]
[It should have been easy to say no there and then, she knew that she wanted to do that, but...]
[She also... didn't know what she really wanted, did she?]
[She'd served people all her life. Octavio, then Tartar, then Mr Grizz. An attempt at escape from one would just lead to entrapment by another. A vicious, never ending, constantly repeating cycle.]
[At this point, she should just accept it and be done with it.]
[She was born to be a soldier.]
[But... that wasn't what she wanted.]
[Why would she escape to the surface if she wanted to be back with Tartar? If she wanted to stay, then she wouldn't have left in the first place, would she? She chose to change her own fate as soon as she gained clarity.]
[It wasn't just yes or no.]
[It was a battle between Order and Chaos.]
[And, as far as she knew, she wanted NOTHING to do with the former.]
[So, she put her hands down, took another step back, inhaled greatly, and spoke one word.]
"No."
[There was a slight quiver in the usually monotone voice. She dared to elaborate.]
"I Don't Wish To Return."

[Rufus didn't speak instantly. And even when she did, she kept it vauge.]
"I Have A Job...Not Much Time Outside That."
[She knew that he would pry for more information, but she wouldn't disclose everything by the first question. She didn't really know if a job actually counted as something she did in her 'spare time', after all, she worked for most of the day. She has another hobby, but it wasn't really one she wanted the phone to know of, anyway.]

[A small sound of either unease or discomfort left her as she involuntarily took a step back.]
[She doesn't quite know how to respond to his remarks. She never really has.]
[Her body visibly relaxed, but she was still very tense, it was clear in the way her eyes shifted away from Tartar slightly, clear in the way she rubbed her index finger with her thumb to regulate herself.]

"I Just...."
[She pauses. She must choose her words carefully, act slightly less afraid then she was inside, because she was afraid - no, terrified - of the phone]
[That mental admission may have sounded slightly silly to an outsider, but it was very much understandable if you knew the circumstances.]
[Eventually she found her own voice within her dulled mind.]
"Didn't Expect To See You Again."
