Inside John Legend & Chrissy Teigen's Serene Family Home | Open Door | Architectural Digest (1 Aug 2023)
Today AD is welcomed by John Legend and Chrissy Teigen to tour their loving family home in Beverly Hills. The superstar couple are no strangers to moving house as the chapters of their lives change, this time around wanting a magical space for their kids to grow up. John and Chrissy enlisted AD100 designer, Jake Arnold, working in tandem as he paired his signature earthy palette with their desire for bright pops of color. Together they designed an open space full of warmth with no shortage of spots for family time during their latest stage of life. “Every house we’ve ever had reflects the moment we were in in our lives, like chapters in a book,” Teigen avers. “We were attracted to this place because of its lightness and airiness. We love how open it feels, and how it’s so connected to the outdoors. We wanted to create something magical, especially for the kids,"

NEVER TOO SMALL: Architect’s Modernist Apartment Restoration, Melbourne 58sqm/624sqft (29.06.2023)
With its striking coral exterior, sky bridges and views from all four sides, Architect Ben Ellul's apartment in the heritage listed Caringal Flats is a unique part of the suburban Melbourne skyline. Where possible Ben retained and restored all the apartment’s heritage details, maintaining white and textured surfaces but adding a series of sleek black contemporary joinery throughout. Inspired by the apartment's views and abundance of natural light, Ben removed the internal walls originally closing off the bedroom, kitchen and entryway, adding a freestanding double sided storage unit that divides the bedroom from the living room. The bathroom and laundry are cleverly concealed by a series of doors leading to the bedroom and low custom made furniture throughout maximises the apartment’s functionality and access to views. A thoughtfully designed space that preserves the apartment’s aesthetic appeal, Ben’s home is functional first and foremost with a beautiful minimalist touch.

NEVER TOO SMALL: Berlin Designer Open Plan Micro Apartment - 36sqm/388sqft (28 Jul 2022)
Located in the popular and creative residential area of Friedrichshain in Berlin, Spanish architect Paola Bagna transformed this micro apartment into an open plan, contemporary space with a series of custom furniture pieces, made from the same material but finished in different colors, creating a common thread throughout. The standout is the generously sized all black L-shaped kitchen, which sits in stark contrast to the minimalist living space containing only three bespoke multifunctional furniture pieces; a coffee table, a chair come bookshelf and daybed sofa that doubles as a guest bed. Curtains were creatively used to make the closest and sleeping area appear hidden within the walls, blending seamlessly into the rest of the open plan space. A custom made platform bed raised to just below the window, creates space for additional storage underneath the bed and within the modular pull out steps.

NEVER TOO SMALL Furniture Designer’s Small Barcelona Apartment - 44sqm/484sqf - One of 6 small houses located inside a 19th Century villa in a peaceful neighborhood of Barcelona, owners Max and Diana removed several dividing walls of the apartment, keeping only one between the bedroom and living room, creating an open and functional space divided by custom built-in multifunctional furniture in muted yellow and gray. A unique bookshelf divides the entrance from the rest of the house, whilst a low joinery unit spanning the length of the left wall provides plenty of hidden storage and displays their collection of eclectic objects. This flows into the living room where a seamless furniture unit combines a sofa and dining table with a collapsible counter. On the opposite wall a desk is cleverly integrated into the kitchen joinery which also extends under the stairs to house the fridge, oven and laundry. The addition of an enclosed glass outdoor area, leading to a rooftop terrace, extends the living area and brings the outside into the villa all year round.
