Oof. That's a really interesting read, thanks for sharing it! It really cements the very depressing idea in my head that Tolkien made Eowyn as awesome as she is entirely by accident.
She deserves better than all the men around her, and even when I first read LOTR as a middle schooler with zero reading comprehension skills I was pissed that no one was taking her accomplishments seriously enough. Everyone should've been falling all over themselves apologizing to her in the Houses of Healing once they got it through their thick skulls what she did and what she was going through and like I know this isn't the point of her story and blah blah war is bad etc etc but HELLO she killed the witch king WHERE are the statues you're building in her honor??
I was head over heels in love with Faramir when I first read these books and even then I was pissed at how he interacted with Eowyn. He spoke plenty about how goddamn sad she seemed, but I kept waiting for him to even ONCE express even the SLIGHTEST awe at the heroic deeds that landed her in the hospital in the first place! Or hell, even any interest in her that wasn't explicitly because she's pretty or sad or pretty because she's sad. I wanted so badly for him to like her for who she was- but I guess for just about every single character, that is who Eowyn was. Tolkien can't even mention her in passing without waxing poetic about her grief and sadness and beauty (but in a sad way). And Faramir didn't even think "wow she's sad because her last parental figure is dead and practically forgot she existed and she's been forced into an invisible caretaker role for years with this creepy guy breathing down her neck while her own brother ignores what she's going through and also we're in an all-consuming war on the brink of apocalypse," he just went "she's sad because heartbreak."
So....yeah I VERY strongly prefer movie Faramir over book Faramir, even though that's not a very popular fandom opinion (and I get it, movie Faramir is far from perfect, but at least he doesn't mention Eowyn's goddamn sadness all the time. Plus, being tempted by the ring knocks him off his high horse a bit lol. you're only human, bro, no matter how tall and grim and tall you are). There are lots of things the books do incredibly well that don't make it into the films, but I find myself liking more and more of the movie versions of the characters over their original counterparts (especially Theoden, jesus christ book Theoden pisses me off).
Wow I have gone entirely off topic sorry XD i barely know what i'm talking about anymore. I'm writing all of this during a zoom call about important government work i'm just tired and mad and sad

Got real exercised about Peter Jackson’s defanged Eowyn and needed to draw my girl going slowly out of her mind as Aragorn’s apathy makes her more and more desperate until she finally breaks free of the chains that bind her and decides that if she is to die, she would choose how.

This part is always genuinely hard for me to read. Sure we're meant to sympathize with Eowyn but we're also clearly meant to like and respect Aragorn throughout, and he's so disgustingly apathetic toward her in this scene that I want to descend into the pages and beat him up.
Was that really what Tolkien was going for here? Sure he's sexist in a lot of ways in his books but this scene reads very differently to me- it's a lot more callous and cruel, where his sexism usually is more passive.
Does Tolkien want us to agree with Aragorn's behavior here? If he doesn't, and we're supposed to think he's being an ass after all, then the book doesn't handle it well. Tolkien never makes a point to tell us that Aragorn learns a lesson from treating Eowyn this badly or that he changes his opinion about the societal role women should and shouldn't play.
I almost feel like Tolkien wrote Aragorn to be deliberately emotionless here because he was worried about implying romantic feelings for Eowyn if Aragorn showed even an ounce of empathy for her. Which I also do not like.
Anyway. I have some questions for old man jirt

Favorite fics
Tanks for tagging me @fishing4stars!
The poll maxes out at 12, and even that felt a bit long, so I've left a few of my fics out (not to mention that Burn Like Cold Iron, as my only long fic, feels unfair to include).
No pressure tagging @laurfilijames @sotwk @the-girl-with-the-algebra-book @heilith and anyone else who wants to play

Thanks for the tag! I might make one of these later today
Favorite Fics
Tagged by @niennawept (thank you for tagging me! <3) to make a list of my own favorite fics that I've written to see which of my favorites are also your favorites. I have 25 fics up on Ao3 (I think that’s right - some of my works are art, not fic). I’ll pick a few I’m happy with, in no particular order.
No pressure tags: @fizzyxcustard @lathalea @scyllas-revenge and anyone else who would like to play!

More male characters who are interested in their mother's legacy. As a trope there's a lot of sons and daughters who follow in the father's footsteps and there's yes, girls who honor their mother, ect. But let's have more dudes who are like. Stumbling on their mom's secret fairy cottage or some shit. And they're like aight gotta make the tea

I feel like I need some examples of when “hello” was considered appropriate to use Way Back When
But there was a period of friction, when “hello” was spreading beyond its summoning origins to become a general-purpose greeting, and not everyone was a fan. I was reminded of this when watching a scene in the BBC television series Call the Midwife, set in the late 1950s and early 1960s, where a younger midwife greets an older one with a cheerful “Hello!” “When I was in training,” sniffs the older character, “we were always taught to say ‘good morning,’ ‘good afternoon,’ or ‘good evening.’ ‘Hello’ would not have been permitted.” To the younger character, “hello” has firmly crossed the line into a phatic greeting. But to the older character, or perhaps more accurately to her instructors as a young nurse, “hello” still retains an impertinent whiff of summoning. Etiquette books as late as the 1940s were still advising against “hello,” but in the mouth of a character from the 1960s, being anti-hello is intended to make her look like a fussbudget, especially playing for an audience of the future who’s forgotten that anyone ever objected to “hello.”

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning
If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:
Tumblr media
These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:
Tumblr media
But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.
Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.
If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.
Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.
Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.
Update: There's now a Megathread about this on the AO3 subreddit.
