My Alumna Initiation Journey- Week 9
I received an email from the local alumnae chapter for A Chi O. She requested that we try to arrange a meeting so that we can talk about my interest in joining the organization. I sent a reply back but I haven't heard anything in a couple of days. This week I also received an email from D Phi E about their revamped alumnae initiate process. They requested that I send in responses to a list of questions to get to know me better. They also provided some preliminary information about the organization so that I could get to know a little bit more about them. The email was sent at the end of the week so I may have more information at the beginning of next week.

My Alumna Initiation Journey- Week 8
There was no activity that took place during this week. I was supposed to be meeting with someone from tri delta. However our schedules had conflicts and we weren’t able to secure a meeting time. So we are going to wait until we both have more availability and then we can arrange our meeting.

My Alumna Initiation Journey- Week 7
This week I received an email from Tri Delta. They found someone that was available to meet with me so that I can ask questions and get to know the local chapter. I am looking forward to this meeting as I thought Tri Delta had forgotten about my inquiry for membership. I think it's great that they took the time to connect me with someone local. They definitely get points for that.
The rankings for this week are unchanged.

My Alumna Initiation Journey- Week 6
This week I attended a virtual open house for G Phi B. I enjoyed my time learning about their alumnae initiate process. They’ve streamlined the program and are offering applicants the opportunity to join through a completely virtual experience. They even offer sponsors for those who do not have one in their personal life. At the meeting I felt very comfortable and welcomed in the group. The people who facilitated the meeting seemed to enjoy their membership and seemed to be eager to extend membership to other people. I felt good vibes at the meeting and I think that I may want to apply for their process. I attended the meeting with one of my friends who is also interested in AI. She also enjoyed the meeting and is considering applying right away. I will be waiting to meet with D Phi E before making a decision as to which group I will apply to.
During this week I also received an email from a member of the local Alpha Omicron Pi chapter. She asked me to explain my interest in the chapter and she also asked me to send her a copy of my resume. She mentioned that she’d share my information with the chapter and then let me know next steps. The rankings for this week are updated.

My Alumna Initiation Journey- Week 4
I had a phone conversation with the representative for the local chapter for AGD. I think the conversation went really well. She is going to speak with the other members of the chapter and will try to arrange a group lunch where we can all meet in person,  get to know each other and so I can have a little more context about the chapter and be able to make a decision as to whether or not I would like to move forward in joining the group. The only thing I am concerned about is the distance between the members. They don't all live in the city so it is a little more difficult for them to meet with each other and to have events together. I don't know how it will work for me with events if they are in areas that might be more challenging for me to get to. I don't like driving too much and too far. This is definitely something to think about.
Despite the distance between members, something I do like is that the representative is trying to have the chapter do more activities together as a group. She's also trying to get more participation from the undergraduates. I really appreciated her attitude and desire for wanting to do more for the sorority. That made a really nice impression.
Most of the week has been pretty quiet after my conversation with AGD. But on the last day of the week I received an email from G Phi B inviting me to participate in an information session to learn more about the alumna initiate program. I am excited to register. The event takes place next month so I won't have an update right away. I hope to learn more about connecting with other members to possibly gain a sponsor. Rankings for this week are a little different based on the new interactions I've had with some of the groups.

My Alumna Initiation Journey- Week 3
This week I've heard back from G phi B. They’ve informed me that they have also updated their AI process and have included my name on their list of interested participants. Once they’ve finalized their process, I will hear back more information. As far as I know there is no local chapter in my area. So I've asked if they could connect me so that I can get to know chapter members and find out if I might be a good match. I also heard back from ASA. Though it was the wrong chapter. It was not the one in my local city. I sent a message on social media to the correct group and I’m waiting for a response.
Something else that I've been doing through this journey is I've been sharing my experience with a few friends. And as a result a couple of them have also decided to reach out to a few of the organizations that I have reached out to. What I like most about this is now I feel like I have a true shared experience in the process of joining the sorority. I like that I get to share my thoughts with a few people and see if maybe we end up deciding to join the same sorority or if we end up joining a different sorority. I will mention that my friends live in different states so part of the deciding factor is going to be what chapters they have in their area. It has been fun comparing notes and comparing perspectives on the things that we think we like or that we don't like about each group.  Rankings for this week continue to be based on my connection with each group’s philanthropy and mission statement but also on my interactions with members of the group so far.

Week 2 & 1/2
I posted week two a bit early and of course, exciting things happened during the week that I need to post about. During the second half of week two I began having increased interaction with some of the groups. The interactions that I have had with the groups has caused me to shift some of my rankings. At this point, I’ve heard back from Tri Delta, Tri Sigma, AXO, AGD and D Phi E. I had a meeting with the AXO AI panel. If they like my interview, they will connect me with the local chapter and discuss possible sponsorship. I was connected with the local AGD chapter president and scheduled a meeting with her. I received an email from D Phi E that they will be changing their AI process and my name is on the list to sign up when they are ready to move forward. New mid- week rankings are below:
1. D Phi E
2.AXO
3.Tri Sigma
4.AGD
5.Tri Delta
6.Phi Mu
7. ADPi
8. ASA

My Alumna Initiation Journey- Week 2
During week two I learned about sigma kappa and alpha sigma tau. I heard back from the national offices of Alpha Chi Omega, Tri Delta and Alpha Gamma Delta. I also filled out the interest form for Gamma Phi Beta. Tri delta and AGD informed me that I would need a sponsor in order to move forward in alumna initiation. So I've responded to their emails asking if they could connect me with the local chapter in my area in hopes of getting to know someone that would sponsor me. Alpha Chi Omega has arranged for me to meet with their AI panel. I am looking forward to the meeting and getting to know some members and hopefully getting to know the organization. I’ve yet to hear directly from anyone in a local chapter for this group.
It’s been a little over one week since I’ve reached out to most of the list. Something that is an unexpected realization is regarding the challenge of connecting with these chapters whether through email or social media. I was not expecting that there would be a delay in communication. I imagined that I would send out my request to meet and I would get an immediate response. That has not been the case.
I did receive a reply from a local Tri Sigma alumna chapter. They have informed me that they are open to meeting me but they don't have any upcoming events. So I have to stay patient. My hope is that I will hear back from a few more organizations and local members, so that I can make a comparison and see how I feel about potential membership.
I’ve decided to rank the sororities based on information I was able to find online. After reading through both national and local chapter websites, I ranked each group based on their history, mission statement, philanthropy, social media presence and alumna engagement with undergraduates.

My Alumna Initiation Journey
Join me on my journey as I seek sisterhood through the alumna initiation process. Alumna initiation means that I can join the sorority even though I've already graduated college. My journey is prompted by my desire to have the experience of sisterhood, to make new friends, to share in the traditions that makes the members sisters, to place myself in an environment where I feel like I belong and to share the connection that can only be obtained with sorority membership.
I spent many years afraid of the 'what if.' But after my most recent birthday, I've decided to stop living in fear and to take a leap of faith. Week 1 begins with a quick internet search of the organizations that offer alumna initiation. The following sororities were listed as offering alumna initiation membership, Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Delta Phi Epsilon, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Mu, Pi Beta Phi, Tri Delta, Tri Sigma.
Some of the groups had applications for alumna membership for me to express interest. The applications I completed were for Alpha Chi Omega and Tri Delta. The next thing I did was to reach out to all of the local area chapters to find out if I could meet with the group and begin getting to know sisters. To do this, I sent out emails and sent private messages through social media. Next, I did a deep dive into each sorority's website to learn more about their founders, history, mission statements and philanthropy. I used this information to help me narrow down my list and to rank them in order of what I'd like to affiliate with.
Now, I wait to see if I get invited to attend an upcoming event.
