I rewatched that scene from 2 x 05 when Ben and Aneesa walk in as Paxton and Devi are studying. Paxton definitely seems jealous while looking between Ben and Devi and scanning her body language. I'm not imagining this right? Please tell me other people saw it too. And maybe that played a role in him telling Devi that the 24-hour relay was a hook up event (I don't mean this as a negative thing by the way, because he was telling the truth, it's just that maybe the jealousy played a role in him telling her about it?)?

I really wish they didn’t bring Paxton back as a swim coach in season 4, struggling to make friends in college would have been such a relatable plot because its something all most all of us go through. It certainly would have been a 100 times better arc and plot than what they actually did. He is the only character we saw in college so it would have been an interesting plot.  For the daxton scenes they should have just had them interact when he was visiting home for weekends or holidays because Mindy was not gonna give them a real shot anyway.  Lindsay and Paxton... Idk they put absolutely no effort in their relationship. Plus he’s freshly out of high school and graduated college. The whole relationship felt forced and rushed because they didn’t want to leave Paxton out without a love interest in the end. Next for daxton, I really wish they made it more heartbreaking.. committed to pining Paxton and a love confession from him to Devi or Rebecca/Trent and gone down the whole “love you enough to let you go” kinda plot. I love my angst okay. I really liked the handshake. Wish the dialogue that went with it wasn’t so superficial. I’ve been screaming that Daxtons final scene should be them shaking hands and Paxton should be the one who puts his hand out first this time WHICH HE DID. I had to pause and recover. Anywayss I’ve got my amazing daxton fic writers to cope.

Thanks for the tag bff and you ate this up <33 The amount of wasted potential for both ships actually. I don’t ship benvi at all... but Daxton and Benvi could have really been fleshed out more and gone deeper if we didn’t try to run through 4 love interests in 40 episodes.  Like you said, they had to break daxton up so quickly to push Devi’s growth forward.. but 5 episodes after their break up (3x08) she still viewed herself the same? She only was comfortable in a relationship with Des because he didn’t know her from school. Then suddenly episode 10, she’s comfortable with herself and loves herself?? Why did daxton have to break up so quickly? The amount of plots we could have got for Daxton tho. Devi and Paxton trying out each other’s cuisine. The swim plot. Devi’s paralysis started in a pool and Paxton being a lead swimmer like the foundation was right there. Devi and Paxton teaching each other easy Tamil and Japanese words. Nalini finally apologizing to Paxton and them getting along. I have so much more in mind but I hate how they gave up on daxton without even giving them a real shot. Even if they weren’t endgame they should have committed to the one sided pining from Paxton. Even in their last scene this boy looked at her with so much love in his eyes. All of their scenes in season 4 had a romantic undertone to it and ended all of it with a “the vibes are officially over” line?? Who wrote that bro bc I still see a lot of vibes. Plus the kiss was so passionate and they showed no signs of stopping until coach walked in and it was a closure kiss???? pls. 

The Wasted Potential that is Paxton Hall-Yoshida (and his relationship with Devi Vishwakumar)

im not gonna beat around the bush here. the NHIE writers have done nothing but find ways to make paxton's problems and story arcs seem so superficial. they've completely undermined his character and further drove most of the audience to believe that he really was just some shallow jock who will always be the wrong guy for devi. they threw away not just his potential as a truly interesting character, but also the potential of how deep and genuine his relationship with devi could've been.

other than his struggles with education, it's disheartening to see how almost all of paxton's storylines somehow revolved heavily around his concerns with his image. he dropped out of college bc he felt like a loser who didn't fit in. he had beef with a student as a faculty member all bc he was hurt that he wasn't respected as the king of sherman oaks anymore. he dated devi in secret bc he was embarrassed to be seen with her. do you see where i'm going here?

the writers started putting more focus on paxton with the intent of fleshing out his character, but they've done it so lazily and with no real dedication so all it did was make people judge him even more. and the sad thing is, this issue could've been resolved in simple but  interesting ways that would've given us a better perspective on his personality and insecurities.

the writers could've chosen to show how paxton struggles with being constantly sexualized and treated like a piece of meat. remember that scene where trent's mom, a grown ass woman, openly flirts with paxton, a teenager?? they could've shown how he felt about that. what if paxton expressed that he constanly leaves girls hanging and that he's never been in a real relationship not bc he's a fuckboy who has no idea how to treat a woman properly, but bc he thinks that girls only want him for his body and his status and not bc they actually like him for who he is. so as a result, the idea of being in a comitted, healthy relationship is something he thought he didn't want and could never have.

and his reason for dropping out of ASU? really? yes, wanting to drop out bc you have no friends and you miss your high school life is a valid thing to feel. but college can be overwhelming and scary bc of so much more than just that. why not tap into paxton's anxiety and make him struggle with diving into college level studies and choosing future career options? i know the writers needed an instant reason to bring him back to sherman oaks but come on. they really couldn't put in the effort to not make it as shallow as it seemed?

the writers could've shown that paxton chose to keep devi a secret not just bc he was embarrassed of her, but bc he was scared to trust her again after what she did. that he was afraid of letting her in again bc he really liked her and he thought they could be something real, but she fucked it up by cheating on him. it would've validated paxton's feelings toward the two timing situation way better. and it would've made devi see just how deeply hurt he was, and it's not just bc the whole school will think he's a joke for crawling back to her. its because for the first time in a while, he genuinely wanted to give his heart to a girl he liked, and she chose to betray him.

these plot points would've helped devi realize that maybe she shouldn't put paxton on a pedestal and sexualize/idolize him so much bc its not just unhealthy for her, its also unfair and insensitive towards him.

now i know, i know, they only have less than 30 minutes per episode and streaming has totally killed the old 20+ ep format, so breaking daxton up as fast as they could was the only option the writers could take in order to ensure that the pacing of devi's growth would make sense and to give room to other characters and their storylines. but daxton's relationship and breakup was handled so poorly its actually laughable. they never even got the chance to flourish before things came crashing down.

the writers missed out on exploring how entertaining their dynamic could've been. they had the perfect chance to make daxton an opposites attract relationship. ben is already known for being so similar to devi, so why not show that paxton is her opposite? not just academically and in terms of popularity, but in terms of personality. imagine, devi is this absolute firecracker who isn't afraid to draw attention to herself. she's an extrovert with a huge temper. on the other hand, paxton seems like this totally chill "it is what it is" dude with a surprisingly sensitive heart that he rarely shows anyone else. why not expand on that and make him this secretly introverted jock who actually isnt that comfortable with his popularity bc of the way it makes him feel taken for granted, instead of just passing him off as the typical immature prom king who feels threatened over the decline of his fame?

why not make devi realize that she can help bring paxton out of his shell in ways he never thought was possible, and why not dig into the idea that paxton can be devi's anchor who can reign her back in whenever she goes off the rails? i once saw a post about how devi's dynamic with her parents mirrors her realtionships with the boys. devi clashes with ben the same way she does with nalini, whereas paxton gives her the same sense of normalcy and security that mohan did. it could've been such a poetic way to enhance daxton's relationship and the writers either just couldn't see it, or they did and didn't care. i don't know which one's worse.

they kept making this mistake over and over, with both paxton and daxton. they had this character and this relationship that they could've made so much more than what it was and they just never took the chance to do it. it was so damn exhausting hoping each season that it would be different, and yet paxton and devi's relationship still always got the short end of the stick, and paxton's arc and personality was still reduced to the basic, shallow, superficial, half-assed, uninspiring story they always promised it would never be. i'm so fucking done.

Never have I ever…wished a character was more developed

They put NO effort in Ethan’s character. Like I was so excited to since the actor was in so many interviews and in the trailer for this season but he was only in three episodes. Three. That’s not even half. Like he just disappeared 😭😭

Knew he’d be written off abruptly but not THAT randomly? Too much of lazy writing in s3 and s4.
