Raya and the Last Dragon felt like a bit of a missed opportunity to showcase the beautifully unique shapes and sensibilities of SEAsian art styles in their dragon design. I couldn’t help but try my hand at pushing that aesthetic in her design just a little bit more. Her colors in the official art are very unusual for the style, too…but I tried to keep them for this. I couldn’t help but include some gold, though. (also, this is all in good fun, there’s probably a million reasons why Disney went with the more Japanese fish-kirin look in the end. But!! I hope that this’ll inspire more folks in the area to make dragons inspired by the culture and mythology here!! Because it’s unique and beautiful!!)

Some more HCs + some explanations!
Tumblr media
–> So about Pakistan (Umer)’s origins, I based his personification off of Pakistan’s ideology or the two nation-theory. I can’t really recall whose quote this was of, but someone mentioned of how “Pakistan” was set in stone from the moment the first person in the subcontinent converted to Islam. I decided to use this to pin-point the timeline Umer was born in.
–> Now i obviously don’t know when the first person in the subcontinent converted to Islam. So i decided to look at things from a geographical p.o.v! In Pakistan’s current-day region, The first major expansion of Islam happened when the Ummayad Caliphate invaded Balochistan-Sindh in the middle of the 6th century. So Umer is thought to have been born a little after the invasion of the Umayyad Empire.
–> He’s a abnormal personification, who didn’t represent any region, empire or kingdom at the time. Therefore He doesn’t quite fit in the category of a “nation-tan” well till very later on. He has always felt that he was somehow different from other nation-tans. I guess the only exception to this would be Hindustan (India), i’ll explain that a little ahead.
–> Repeatedly getting invaded by foreigners and the continuous in-fighting between his own kingdoms has messed him up in the head. His personality can be well… extreme? It’s a bit hard to explain but he’s very emotional, however he has a hard time expressing these emotions well. Due to growing up and living in such a hostile environment, he has had to repress his emotions for a long time. That being said, once he starts to care about someone, he really starts caring about them. He has learned to be very patient, But when you eventually manage to tick him off, Just- just run.  He’s not going to stop chasing you until you’re either totally obliterated or he gets tired of chasing you lol
–> He has identity Issues lol The utter messed up genealogy of his people also contributes to this. His location as a whole can be considered as a cross-roads between multiple regions, which explains why this region has been invaded by a lot of different groups. Geographically speaking, He’s close to South Asia, the middle East and Central Asia. Different groups in Pakistan can see their cultures being similar to these regions as well. Some people relate more with South Asian cultures, Others relate their cultures more with the the middle eastern or Central Asian cultures etc etc Being a single representation to all these different people and keeping them on a single page is tough.
–> Coming to Hindustan (India), i think he’s a nation-tan that is similar in his construct to Pakistan. The current subcontinent has been a continent of many nations and kingdoms. These regions have rarely been united in the course of history sans a few exceptions. So i HC India loosely representing the inner core and the southern regions of the Subcontinent, similar to how Pakistan represents the North Western regions of SA (or the crossroad region). India has experienced the similar turmoil Pakistan has gone through. India used to get heavily scarred and sick due to his local kingdoms fighting amongst themselves too. Though things were worser for Pakistan because he had to deal with more invasions and several other factors than Hindustan.
–> I believe these similarities caused Hindustan to welcome Umer into the “ *ze South Asian Family ™* ” rather quickly when they eventually met under the Delhi Sultanate. Both India and Pakistan felt as though the other was able to understand their pain and dilemmas better than most other nations. This was something they would heavily bond over. Both of them were on the journey of self-determination. I think i should mention something here, none of the south asians are related to each other. The extremes of this region are polar opposites of eachother. You can think of this as a ‘squad’ India created to fit in with the nation-tans he borders (and to get over his crippling depression, the dude had enough of seeing China being surrounded by so many kids)
–> I believe Umer is in his last stages of being a Nation-tan, and he thinks the same too. The conclusion of his journey was suppose to his realization as Pakistan, there’s a heavy chance he might die if something happens to it. Just my two-bits. In the course of his 1400 years of existence, he has experienced a lot that has left him internally tired and exhausted. Hence he appears somewhat tired all the time.
Anywho, these are some of my interpretations and HCs :)

Fan fiction reviews
Imagine you have a coworker who likes to bake. Every week, they bring in a batch of delicious, homemade cookies and leave them in the break room. Next to the plate of cookies is a sign, “If you like my cookies, could you please just leave me a note and tell me what you like about them? The more feedback you leave about what you like, the more incentive I have to bake.” A hundred coworkers walk by and take a cookie. One person leaves a note. “Great cookies! Bake some more soon!”
The next week, once again there are cookies in the break room with the same sign. Once again a hundred people take a cookie and only one person leaves a note. “Nice! More soon!”
Week Three- Once again, a hundred people take a cookie. No one leaves a note.
Week Four- One hundred people take a cookie. No note.
Week Five- There are no cookies. Someone leaves a note. “Where are the cookies? I loved them. Please, please bake some cookies.”
Week Six- There are no cookies. Ten people leave notes. “I miss your cookies. They were my favorites. I loved the chocolate chips. My friend really liked the way you had almonds in the cranberry ones.”
Week Seven- Motivated by the wonderful notes, the baking coworker stays up late to bake the best batch of cookies they have ever made. That week, a hundred people take a cookie. No one leaves a note.
The co-worker gives up baking for their colleagues.
