They charge you for editing, formatting, cover art, and more. With most of these companies, you will never seen a cent of any royalties made from sale of your book. A legitimate publishing company only makes money when you make money, they will never charge you to publish with them. If a company approaches you and says "Hey, we'll publish your book, just pay us X amount of money," tell them to go fuck themself and block them.

libby app guide

aka how to support libraries and get books and audiobooks for free without pirating them.

disclaimer: this is so easy. it is also really fun.

one: download the libby app. you'll open it and it'll ask you to add a library.

two: get a library card. don't have one? good news, it's really easy and i am saying this as the laziest person on earth. it varies what you need to have to get a card library to library but almost all libraries will let you get one online. i have a card for my home town and for the town i moved to. sometimes you only need an email address, sometimes you need an area code. to get mine it took me about 5 minutes of lying on the couch aimlessly tapping on my phone. follow your heart. you can get cards for places you don't currently live. i will leave the ethics of that up to you but it's probably better than pirating and either way you're creating traffic for libraries which is what they need to exist.

three: add your card. you can add multiple cards for multiple libraries. you need the number. i have never had libby fail to recognize a valid account.

four: search for your book! some will be ready to borrow right away. others have an estimated delivery time. libby will always pick the one that's the fastest from the options available at all the libraries you have cards at. you can borrow audiobooks and ebooks. libby will send you a notification when you're book is ready to borrow. in my experience it's a lot faster than the estimate. if you aren't ready to read it, you can ask to be skipped over in line so you keep your place at the front but let someone else read it first.

five: read it!!! kindle is the most common way to do this. you can go to your loan and click read with kindle. it'll download it to all your devices where you have kindle. as long as you have the loan, it'll act like your book. when the loan ends, if the device is connected to the internet, it'll automatically be returned. it will save all your notes and highlights. (if you disconnect your device from the internet, it won't return the book. weewoo.)

anyway in case anyone else has been wondering about it, i really love it. is a nice surprise to see what i'm going to get and it's cut my reading costs down big time! it's also neat because i get to synch my books between devices unlike downloading books through cough cough other means. good luck!

best advice i ever got as a writer was to pick a hobby that i hated more than writing and stick with it. i’m a runner now and it’s miserable and i Hate It and writing is so lovely in comparison. bonus: i’m in excellent shape and running gives you a lot of time to think about writing. i’ve solved a lot of plot complications while running.

This is such funny advice. Writing is so excruciating, you gotta take up Self Torture so that writing feels like a fun little break 😭

I've been seeing a disturbing number of "queer safe spaces" describe themselves as things like "femme & them" and even worse "she+," conflating femininity & nonbinaryhood. cease this immediately. say it with me: nonbinary people are NOT women-lite and it is extremely violent and straight up incorrect to imply that all they/thems are fem adjacent. this is erasure and this verbiage does nothing but make gnc and nonbinary spaces unsafe for masc and male nonbinary people. nonbinary, genderqueer and other third gender people can be and are masculine and men, we can be hes as well as shes and theys, stop allowing yourself and your peers to view nonbinary as woman/femme-lite, signed a butch nonbinary person.

Y’ever read something and have understanding that has eluded you interminably suddenly stop, curl up, and snuggle neatly into a fold in your brain because a new way way opened to it?

How about hcs for Jade, Floyd and Lilia with a crush on a reader who’s usually stoned face, but one day they say something really insensitive to the reader (they didn’t realize it was insensitive before it was too late) and then they start to cry

Jade

Is caught by surprise and immediately feels terrible once he realizes that the tears were very real and his fault. How could he of all people slip from his polite demeanor and hurt you? Even if he was in a bad mood, he easily recognises that it was a hasty comment from his end.

Jade knows very well what it’s like to maintain a cool front, which makes him want to reverse the last few minutes so that you wouldn’t have ended up crying. He’s always wanted to see another side of you, but if it's at the cost of something hurtful it’s clearly not worth it.

“I… I truly apologize, it was insensitive of me to say such a thing.” The words taste like sandpaper on his tongue. Jade tries to reach out to you, but stops himself - would you really want him near you immediately after that?

The rest of his apology is through little things, like giving you your favorite snacks and other doting actions (not that he’d willingly call it that). Other times he just stands next to you, like now when he got an umbrella to share with you after you forgot yours, and was walking you back.

Perhaps it was a coward’s way out, but with the rain to help cover up his nerves, Jade apologizes to you one more time where his glimpse of vulnerability is drowned out by the water. Hopefully, witnessing it will help communicate his sincerity to you.

Floyd

It takes him a moment to realize you were upset since you were faced away from him, so he kept talking without knowing. Once he does he tries to comfort you by soothingly patting your head, muttering ‘sorry’s while biting his lip; he didn’t think that would make you cry.

Floyd’s moods can vary quite quickly, but he was also good at sensing other people’s emotions. While he wasn’t able to prevent the insensitive comment, he would be able to keep track of your reactions now that his attention was focused on you.

Floyd even mentions letting you insult him or giving you a chance to swing at him. Later on he refuses to leave you alone until you’re feeling better, offering to go to the lounge or anywhere else he thinks would be familiar to you.

It's caring in his own way, despite his slight reluctance at first because he didn’t know what to do when someone cries. If it was anyone else, he wouldn’t go as far as to make you a drink or other things to cheer you up, you know?

One thing’s for sure though; Floyd wouldn’t want this to happen again. He wants his Shrimpy to be happy and play with him, after all! He’ll even derail conversations with others if it leans towards the topic that made you cry, though the fact that it was for you is so subtle that most might miss it, at a glance

Lilia

Immediately regrets it and tries to comfort you. Lilia’s eyes widen as soon as he recognises his slip-up, dread entering his stomach when a tear runs down your face.

You turn away and try to leave but he catches your wrist with a raw “I’m sorry” falling from his lips before he can think of anything else. The quick reaction calms you down enough to stay, though the things he said still stung. 

Wisdom may come with age but that doesn’t mean he’ll never make a mistake, yet he’ll always regret that it had to be one that made you cry. Lilia promises not to say something like that again - and if he does you can come up with a punishment fitting for him.

Relief floods him when you crack a tiny smile. He mirrors it with an unsure one himself. Usually playful and mysterious, Lilia now faces you with genuine worry without those veils and takes both your hands in his as if he was afraid that otherwise, you would truly leave.

If nothing else, Lilia was always good with telling stories. He’s aware of what silence can do for a negative state of mind, so after he apologizes he tells you one to calm the air. It’s whimsical and thoughtful, ending on a sentimental note while his eyes flick towards yours, offering one last sorry in the form of squeezing your hands gently and placing a kiss on your forehead.

He’ll try to do better, alright?
