evangeline couldn’t take the sight in front of her. the poor girl was getting yelled at for something that wasn’t her fault. even though she was a quiet girl, she wasn’t going to let this stand. she stood in front of the girl protectively. “you back the fuck off right now, or i’ll make sure you wish you did.” she spat. the person finally walked away and evangeline turned. “are you okay?” she asked quietly.
“wow.” lex’s mouth dropped a little bit when evangeline stepped in, she almost wanted to applaud the girl. “thank you, yes i’m good, thanks for saving me.” she laughed a little bit under my breath, “you’re like--my knight in shining armor.” lex smiled, “i definitely owe you one.”

“It’s, uh, nice to meet you. Obviously not under these circumstances, but.” God, could I be any more awkward. “That’s a, uh, nice bike.” Adam pointed to the bike, as if she didn’t know what bike he was referring to. “I have a long board back home for when I don’t want to drive.” She didn’t ask, you should have just walked away why are you like this.
“oh yeah, nice to meet you too. maybe next time i see you i can try and hit you with my car.” lex laughed-wow, so not funny. “i mean, that was supposed to be a joke.” she pointed out, laughing even more at her own stupidity. “oh thanks, it’s a ten speed.” lex didn’t really know why she was still talking, “what’s a long board?” she asked, “is that like, a skateboard?”

“i am too sensitive, someone told me that today.” she nodded, looking at her friend, “i just don’t like dealing with mean people, is that really so wrong?” it had been a long time that she had been this way, and she always had people telling her that she needed to grow a backbone. “alright, sounds good, i think i’m going to get mint chocolate chip.”

She found it cute how nervous this female seemed to be, she wasn’t used to meeting humans who seemed to have so much innocence still to them. It was very welcoming. “ Please to meet you Lex. ” She offered her hand.
“i might as well be with all the problems i’ve been causing lately, i guess i’ve just been stuck in my own little world.” lex laughed a little to herself. she loved meeting people that were nice. she was so used to dealing with jerks, that a nice face was such a pleasant surprise. “nice to meet you too. i hope i’m not keeping you from anything, with all my chatter.”

lex wiped her eyes, and looked away from them, “i’m not crying.” she mumbled, crossing her arms over her chest when they yelled at her. “i’m not sensitive either. why don’t you just leave me alone.” lex bit out, still not looking at them.

Normally, yelling was a staple- and something she often ignored. But this town, and these people were, usually, nicer than New York, so she figured she might as well be too. Once thing she didn’t change, though, was her accent- or more importantly, the harshness it could dole out. Lily moved over from where she was shoving the guys shoulder “Hey buddy, either shut up- or ill kick your teeth in and make you.”
a look of shock appeared on lex’s face with lily stepped in to yell at the man for her. she appreciated it, but hadn’t expected it. the guy sauntered off with a strange expression on his face. “oh thank you so much.” she laughed a little with discomfort, she hated that people often had to save her. “that’s what i need, a killer accent and the ability to yell at people. please teach me.” she laughed jokingly.

“i think we should just have one of those..” she thought for a minute trying to place the word that was on the tip of her tongue. her eyes brightened as it came to her. “high tea parties!” she exclaimed with excitement. “you know, the ones with the delicious desserts?”

Eric was going to step in regardless; but knowing the pair of lawbreakers yelling at Lex were prone to adding literal injury to insult markedly sent him moving faster. “Romano! Bush!“ he greeted them brightly. “Didn’t expect to catch you in these areas. You’re here to talk about the business deal, I presume?” He brought them away from Lex, partaking in a few moments’ worth of conversation, before he said, “The deal is the same as it ever was, my friends.” His voice was not loud, but it cut through the air; and despite his (sarcastic) use of the phrase “my friends”, he was apparently preparing to drop the politeness with which he’d been treating them all this time.
Casually, gracefully, he laid a hand on one of them: Romano, who squirmed and was unable to free himself from his grip. “I hope you see how firm I am in this conviction,” he declared with a cheerful smile and tone. It went on for several moments, the two criminals shrinking. Then, he released the arm and gave them a chuckle and friendly pats on the back. “Go away now. Don’t ever go near her or anyone else I care for, alright? You only go to me.
“Lex, are you okay?” he almost immediately asked her after the criminals left. He was distressed: angry at himself for letting this happen to her, angry at his “friends”, concerned about her wellbeing. He endeavored to suppress his anger, hoping she would relax. She needed solicitude most. “I’m so sorry. That won’t happen again, I promise.” Was he making a promise to himself or Lex? He was just so guilty. This danger wouldn’t have befallen Lex if it weren’t for his own illegal activities.
lex watched, she watched everything happen in front of her. she didn’t understand it, but wouldn’t ask any questions. she wasn’t stupid, she knew that eric took part in a lot of things, and she just assumed that not all of them were particularly legal. but either way, she felt safe the moment he showed up, she knew that he would take care of things--take care of her. she watched the interaction, keeping her eyes shifting around so no one thought she was staring, she kept her hands clasped in front of her body. she was worried, she hoped they wouldn’t come near her again. she wanted to trust eric’s threats enough, but sometimes, she didn’t know if it was enough. when he approached her she had to pull herself out of the nightmarish daydream she was having. she had been so focused that diving back into reality seemed almost impossible. she waved him off, “oh, yeah, i’m fine.” she said calmly, she wasn’t crying, which was always a good sign. she blinked a few times and was finally paying attention to what was happening, “who were those guys?” she asked, the fear showing a little bit in her timid voice. “you promise? you won’t always be around to rescue me. something bad could have happened if you hadn’t shown up.”

“oh.” lex felt herself blushing, completely, her entire face turning red. she hated being so sensitive, she really hated it. “i’m sorry.” she apologized, covering her face with one hand, embarrassed. “it’s my own fault, i’m too sensitive, but yes, you can always make it up to me in ice cream.”

adriel was quite the opposite of the petite girl, though not in all ways. he only seemed to expect the best from people. however, they both shared a mutual kindess and self-blaming issue. though adriel’s mind was far from the differences between the two of them, instead focusing on the conversation they were having. listening carefully to each of lex’s words how he would have anyones. “ work can certainly be tiring – and distracting. do you think they’d give you a day off ? it never hurts to recharge. ” he suggested, and as she finally met his eyes and apologized once again, addy continued to smile. “ that’s alright. you’re not keeping me, i offered to listen, remember ? ”
“well, i could take a day off really anytime i wanted too, i kind of just work for myself.” she told him, “i run my own photography business, and i don’t want to say no to people so i basically take every job i can and well, that leads to me being very busy,” lex explained, she really didn’t mind it most of the time, she was making a lot of money, which was helpful when it came to her getting out of town someday. she needed to save every penny she possibly could. “right, you did, what about you? what do you do for work?”

Wow, I’m a fucking asshole. His face turned red in embarrassment at how hurt this person was at him yelling at her. He had felt justified in his reaction, considering she almost hit him with her bike, but seeing her on the verge of tears, he wished he could take it back. “No, I’m sorry, it wasn’t that big of a deal, I shouldn’t have been such a dick.” He stood there awkwardly, not knowing what the say. He coughed after a few seconds and tripped over saying “I’m, I’m. uh, Adam.”
lex got off her bike and stood next to it, her arms crossed over her chest and her eyes refusing to look at his, they found anything else possible to look at, her shoes, her bike, the tree behind him. anything but his eyes. she didn’t like anger. it terrified her absolutely to her core. when he apologized she felt the happiness come back into her body, she straightened up, uncrossed her arms and actually looked at him. being yelled at had an effect on her, it made her tense up, it made her remember things that she didn’t want to remember. “that’s okay, i am really sorry, i should have been paying more attention.” she offered, knowing that it probably wasn’t enough. she really needed to work on getting her head out of the clouds. “oh, i’m alexis, but most people call me lex.”

“please don’t yell at me.” lex muttered under her breath, anger took a lot out of her. when people got angry she always ran in the opposite direction, it was an emotion she couldn’t handle, she returned the emotion usually with a horrified look on her face and sometimes a few tears. “i’m sorry, please just - please don’t yell at me.” lex kept talking even though she was sure they were ignoring her.
