“You know you’ll always be my brother, right?” she asked quietly as she looked at him. It didn’t matter if he wasn’t, because he always would be. He’d always been her favorite brother, and that wouldn’t change with the knowledge of who his parents were, because why would that change anything. “You’ll always be my favorite”

༺✧༻ He glanced up from his breakfast, pausing with a morsel of cheese part way to his lips with a few blinks. His expression, at first taken off guard, waned into a soft sort of endearment for the girl he’d grown up with, dropping the bit of food back on his plate and folding his arms on the tabletop in front of him. 

  “You only say that because I kept your secrets and let you get away with things,” he teased her, though there was no disbelief in those dark eyes — eyes that had seen so much and grown only deeper with understanding over the years. 

  “But you won’t get away from me, Arya Stark,” he spoke a bit softer, a smile working its way across his lips. “Because I am your brother,” he agreed with her wholeheartedly, glancing between her eyes, hoping to impress upon her how truly he meant those words. “Blood isn’t all that counts for family, you know,” he leaned in toward her a little. “It’s the people who believe in you — who fight for you and want to see you succeed no matter the odds. The people who are there for you when no one else is,” he shook his head, reaching across the table and pushing a small tendril of hair out of her face before gently flicking her nose with his fingertip, leaning back.

  “No matter what happens, that’ll never change.” ༺✧༻

༺✧༻ Jon spared his brother a withering look at the self-assured offer of mercy, pushing back with all his weight against the forward charge, his footing slipping a bit on the dust-strewn floor. “You’d like that wouldn’t you? If I’d make it easy on you,” he grunted, stumbling a little when they retreated from their lock of swords but regaining his footing quickly enough, sword at the ready. 

  The offer to start again would hardly have time to be answered when Robb was lunging at him, testing his reflexes, and the Seven be kind Jon had jumped back at the swipe just in time for it to miss his middle. But there would be no counting of his blessings, for just as surely as the wooden sword had missed his belly it had caught the piece of twine that held up his trousers, snapping it with a twang and sending the garment pooling around his boot-ankles. 

  Both boys stared at each other for a moment awestruck before Jon turned a brilliant shade of scarlet, knowing by the way that mischievous mouth curled at the corners and spread wide on his face Robb would not be letting him off easy on this one. 

  “Oh shut it, that was a lucky swing!” he spat back, dropping his wooden sword and frantically gathering his pants back up ‘round his waist, “if I hadn’t lost my good belt...-” he trailed off, scowling at the scene his brother was drumming up on the floor, though he couldn’t stay mad for long — Robb’s joy was infectious.

  “At least I’ve somethin’ worth singin’ about — which is more then they’ll be able to say for you when I’m done with ye’,” he retorted with measured indignation used to cover hints of a smirk tugging at his lips. ༺✧༻

༺✧༻ Jon stared down at the thread-bare cloth between his fingers, turning it over a few times as the memories flooded back to him. “Septa Mordane’s veil. You really kept it all these years?” He gave her a look of incredulity mixed with amusement. 

  They had stolen it from her bedchambers what felt like lifetimes ago on a dare —Rob had put Sansa up to it, but Jon hadn’t felt his younger sister capable of such a heedless scheme on her own; she wasn’t Arya after all. And so Jon had aided her in the theft, making her swear to the Seven on old Rickard’s grave that she would blame it on one of the direwolf pups, who possessed just enough mischief in them to do such a thing.

  “She threw such a fit come morning, I thought we’d never hear the end of it,” he chuckled, passing the bundle back and forth between his hands before handing it back to her. “Father knew — how else would a pup find its way into the Septa’s room if it hadn’t been let in?” He shrugged. “He assumed it had been me that’d been put up to it. I never corrected him,” he offered her a small smile as he moved to take a perch on the arm of a chair by the fireplace. “You might have deserved it for all the times you were a bit of a brat, but I still couldn’t bear the sight of you cryin’ on account of Rob’s little games,” he admitted. ༺✧༻
